    3. Thank you Lauren for lighting a fire under us. :) Here goes: My 5th g. grandfather was James Stewart b. 1726 in Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland or possibly NY or NJ. Sometimes he is listed as "the elder" or "UE" or "UEL" which stands for United Empire Loyalist. His most popular d.o.b. is 1726, but can vary from 1700 to 1726. He d. possibly in May, for sure in 1822 in Ontario, Canada. Death places have been listed as St. David's, Lincoln County, Niagra, or Niagra District. The above James Stewart m. Mary Jemima Taylor in 1750 possibly in NY or NJ. I have seen her name listed as Mary Jermima Taylor also. Mary was born 1730 in Cecil, Courtland, NY. She d. Mar 18, 1833 Niagra, Lincoln Co., Ontario, Canada. James and Mary had nine children, all born in Elizabethtown, Essex Co., NJ. Their children are as follows: William b. 1750 d. Ontario Susanna b. 1753 d. 1838 Ontario Charles b. 1754 d. Ontario Joseph b. 1755 d. 1835 Minisink, Orange Co., NY James b. 1756 d. 1839 Ontario Taylor b. 1767 d. 1826 Ontario Benjamin b. 1758 d. 1851 Ontario John b1766 d. 1841 Battle Creek, Calhoun Co., MI ( my 4th g gpa) Enoch b. 1775 d. 1813 Ontario A few family trees I have seen have the above James Stewart b. 1726 parents as James Stewart and Mary Gibson. I cannot find any documentation to support this and had eventually delete over 1500 people from my tree. Live and learn! On Ancestry I found a FAG that shows that James was buried in Lakeview Cem in Thorold, Ont., CAN. Other info: James Stewart came to NJ as a young boy before the Battle of Culloden in 1746. His wife was born and raised along the Susquehanna River area of NY. They settled on a small farm in Westfield, NJ about seven miles west of Elizabethtown in Essex Co. In 1772, due to the early hostilities with the Brittish the family moved to a small farm in Minisink, Orange Co., NY. In 1772 James and his son Joseph signed the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Rebels in Goshen in 1775. Joseph had three tours of duties in the Rebel army in southern NY. James remained at the farm in Minisink until Gov. James Graves Simcoe offered Crown Land Grants to the Simcoe Loyalists. In 1774 James brought his family to upper Can and resided at St. David's close to Niagra Falls. His son Joseph remained on the farm in Minisink. His family remained on this family farm until the 1960's when his grandson Edward Adelbert Stewart d. in 1961. This branch of the Stewart's remains in this town and the surrounding areas. The rest of the family remains in Ontario. Simcoe granted the family 1900 acres between 1797 and 1809. In 1793 James petitioned for land as a loyalist. He received 400 acres and 200 for each child and 200 acres for a William Stewart who may have been James grandson. This Wm. Stewart later forfeited his land for fighting on the American side in the War of 1812. When the War of 1812 broke out James Son, Enoch served on the Royal Artillary on the Brittish side. He d. in 1813 of disease. At the end of the war, James son Benjamin took up residence on his land grant. The 1828 census of Rainham shows his son Benjamin Jr. living on this land. This is absolutely everything I know. I would like to be in touch with my Ontario cousins as well as tracing James Stewart line back further. In another email I will be dealing with my 4th grandfather John Stewart who started the Michigan Stewart's. Thank you, Sally F. Stewart Ross ross3324@comcast.net
