    3. There is an excellent, animated map of the progressive geographics of Tennessee at www.tngenweb.org TN was formed in 1796 FROM North Carolina. As far as I know there has been only one small adjustment made in that, generally, north / south line and that was in 1838 when Polk, TN was formed just after the Forced and final Great Removal of the Cherokee Indians. A small portion of CCNC was put into Polk TN. There were MANY county line adjustments in the region after that point...most of them small. That line between NC and TN ran the apex of he Appalachian Mtns in that general area. IE in this southern portion it runs the top of Hanging Dog mtn in the Tellico Ranger Dist. BTW these mountains was very instrumental in affecting early roads and migration patterns. There just wasn't that many ways of feasibly crossing them when it came to cumbersome wagons and whichever 'critters' they used to pull them. There were only two MAJOR routes. One was the Wilderness Road that came down thru Sullivan County. The other was the ancient Cherokee Indian path called the Unicoi Trail. The two recorded events we have of the earliest exploration Ii n the 1500's came up from the southern costal line. Randal; I am poorly equipped to answer your quest regarding the morphology of the touching borders of these three states. However, its a great question which has troubled myself and others. Here are my thoughts. I have been a frequent poster of NC Stewart questions as Rosannah Stewart, b c 1769, claimed to have been born in North Carolina but in an area which is now Tennessee. Other border realignments took place in the North-East corner of Georgia about the time gold was discovered there. Perhaps some others can point us to a proven answer to our questions. I am surprized with your comment that your Stewart ancestors went (from Canada?) to NC or GA about 1810 as that was the time slavery was causing others, including my gg grandfather Samuel Stewart to migrate to NW Ohio with many others , many Quakers.
