The area of Greene County, Greeneville, Quakers’ Knob was known as the State of Franklin for about 4 years and then it became part of TN. A tremendous number of Quakers actually stayed in these areas of East Tennessee around New Market (just north of Knoxville, Greeneville, Morristown, Dandridge in areas of Jefferson County, a few in Cocke County and another group in Hamblen County. My husband’s Marshall’s came in 1796, and were the founders of the area called Quakers’ Knob and were instrumental in establishing a school which became one of the first public schools in Greene County. Part of them stayed there, and part moved further south by about a county or two and settled and farmed there in an active Quaker area. There are excellent records available in both Greene and Jefferson Counties in TN at the library and courthouses.. Here is some info about the Quakers coming into TN... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeneville,_Tennessee And this might give you some insight on why many of the Quakers left and headed into Ohio, Indiana..from East TN..There are also many records available which may have some of the family members you are looking for. http://www.tngenweb.org/campbell/history/Quakers.html Donna Nichols ********************************* PLEASE PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION to the address fields when you are sending or replying to list mail. ---------------------------------- Please visit Clan Stewart in America's web site: http://www.clansstewart.org ------------------------------------ Looking for Scottish games in your area?
