It is believed that he went to South Africa. I have found a Mr Chas Stewart ("Scotch" aged 28) travelling alone on Dunvegan Castle bound for Cape Town from Southampton in 1897. I found him in 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses but not in 1901. We believe that he married and had family in South Africa as pictures (now lost but remembered by my late mother) were sent home. His wife may have had some connection with David Livingstone's wife. This query has been on the South Africa message board for over 10 years but has still to elicit any useful replies.
