Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County Volume VI Edited by George Francis Dow Transcribed and Abstracted from the Original Court Manuscript by Harriet S. Tapley Published and Copyrighted by the Essex Institute 1917 Salem Quarterly Court Nov. 1676 " Upon petition of Tho. Abbitt, for redress, he being rated for the head of a lunatic person, whom he kept in his house, to 18 rates for the charge of the late war, court declared that no lunatic person is ratable." "John Ossgood, aged about forty-six years, deposed that Thomas Parker, who lately lived with Tho. Abbet, about five or six years ago lived with deponent about nine years. He was ' a lunaticke mane one parte off the moone hee was very much out off hie sences & sum times outragosly mad or distracted so as that hee oftintimes indangered the great hurte or death of my wiff & children so that I did not dare to kep him any longer, when hee was in his well Frame he would work well with gildings, etc.'" "George Abbete, aged about forty-four years, deposed that he occasionally worked with Thomas Parker at his brother's and Parker often used to roam in the woods distracted and spoil his clothes, etc." According to the Osgood family genealogy the John Osgood aged about 46 who made the above deposition in Nov. 1676 lived in Andover see below: " In the year 1630, ten years after the Pilgrims stepped on to the shore of Plymouth, Mass., Robert Osgood died at his home, Cottingworth, in Wherwell, England. He was the father of our emigrant, John Osgood. At that time John had been married to Sarah Booth for three years and they were the parents to either one or two children. Six years later they had four children; Sarah, John, Mary, and Elizabeth.... During the year 1638, 3,000 Englishmen and women sailed for America aboard twenty ships. John Osgood and his Family were among them. They sailed aboard the Ship Confidence in April and landed in Ipswich, Mass. in June of 1638. The Family probably secured lodging with Christopher Osgood, another of our three emigrants, who had come to America in 1633 and settled in Ipswich. John Osgood only stayed in Ipswich for a brief period, since there is record of him living in Newbury, Mass. later in that Summer. Shortly after their arrival in Newbury, Sarah gave birth to a second son, Stephen. Three years later John Osgood moved his Family once more to a settlement called Cochichowicke (Great Water), which later became Andover, Mass. John was the first settler in this new Town and he built his home on the banks of the Cochichowicke River. The site of his home can be found today at the junction of Osgood Street and Court Street. John Osgood came to own over 600 acres of land. His "Great Wide Meadow", referred to in deeds of the 1690's, was situated across from the house. His barn was located on Osgood Street as we know it today. John became one of the most respected and influential citizens of the new Town. His sixth and last child, Hannah, was born in Andover in 1644." " Our Sinne of Ignorance, Andover in 1692 " prepared by the Andover Historical Society & North Andover Historical Society, 1995, includes a large map of Andover in 1692 and shows where each Andover family lived during the witchcraft craze. It also lists all the families who lived in Andover in 1692. It places everyone in family groups, with ages, some occupations, and generation number from the immigrant. There are two Thomas Abbotts listed: NE # 35 ( reference to house location on large map of Andover) Abbott, Thomas, and Sarah ( Steward) Thomas, 24; Sarah, 21; Joseph, 18; Nathaniel, 14; John, 11; Mary, 6; Ebenezer, 2; Dorothy (?) inf. SE # 74 Abbott, Thomas (2), 26 ( prob. yeoman). George Abbott brother of Thomas Abbott was dead in 1692 and his wife had remarried Henry Ingalls. Here is their listing: NE# 48 Ingalls, Henry ( 1) , 65 and Sarah ( Farnum) ( Abbot) Here is the listing for the John Osgood mentioned in the Nov. 1676 court deposition above: NE # 5 Osgood, John (2) 62 ( got liquor license in 1659) and Mary ( Clements) 55 Peter, 29; Samuel, 27; Sarah, 17; Clement, 12 My note----he is 62, thus born 1630, in the Nov. 1676 court deposition he said he was about 46, thus born 1630 and it fits with the information in the Osgood genealogy, that by 1630 his parents had either one or two children and he was the second child. Here is the listing for the lunatic Thomas Parker: NE # 2 Parker, Mary ( Stevens) ( widow of Joseph (1) ) Thomas (2) 38 " NON COMPOS MENTIS" My note, this is Latin and it means 'not of sound mind' We know that George Abbott died in Rowley in 1647 leaving 4 sons: Thomas Abbott, Sr. Nehemiah Abbot George Abott Thomas Abbot, Jr. 1. Thomas Abbott, Sr. married Dorothy Swan and died childless in Rowley in 1659 2. Nehemiah Abbot moved to Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts 3. George Abbott moved to Andover about 1655, married Sarah Farnum there on Apr. 26 1658 and died there on Mar 22, 1688/89 4. Thomas Abbot, Jr. where did he go? Salem Quarterly Court, June 1662: In court papers setting the estate of Joseph Jewett late of Rowley, Joseph Jewett's land was said to have met "on the northwest by the upland of Thomas Abbott." So at that date, June 1662, Thomas Abbott was still in Rowley. Who is the Thomas Abbott who married Sarah Steward in Andover on Dec 15, 1664 and died there on May 06, 1695? According to the above Salem Quarterly Court documents of Nov. 1676, the Thomas Abbott of Andover who took in Thomas Parker, the lunatic, was the brother of George Abbott. And 16 years later in 1692, George Abbot was dead, but his widow was still living in Andover remarried to Henry Ingalls; there were two Thomas Abbotts households in Andover, one was married to Sarah Steward and the other was 26 years old and living alone; John Osgood and Thomas Parker, the lunatic were still there. In 1664 when Thomas Abbott married Sarah Steward there were very few Thomas Abbotts in America. James Savage in his "A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY of THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND" names 5. 1. Thomas Abbott of Rowley ( This was Thomas, Sr. son of George) 2. Thomas who married Sarah Steward 3. Thomas who was in Kittery, Maine in 1688 son of Richard 4.
