    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Pattycake1945 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/9324/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dora Lee Stewart/Stuart was my great grandmother. A descendant says she was born in Arkadelphia, AR and married John Wilson Cooper in 1882. Where they were married I have no idea. It could have been AR, OK or TX. John and Dora lived in and around Gainesville, TX the rest of their lives and are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville. The couple had four children, Anna (had a Van Zandt son), Emma married a Martin (G G or J G), Harvey and George Thomas. To my knowledge they all remained in or close to Gainesville and some are also buried in the Fairview Cemetery. Both Dora and John Wilson are my brick walls. If anyone can help I would appreciate it so much. I have been at this for fifteen years and would appreciate any little scrap of information on any of these people. Thank you! You are welcome to write to me at [email protected] Thank you again. Patty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: kittykatrw Surnames: Stewart Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/9317/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I found a typed note from about fifty years ago. It states "Eight brothers, early in the 18th century, emigrated from Scotland to Lancaster County, Pa. They moved on to western Pennsylvania and easter Ohio(Mercer, Venango, Clintonville)". The pedigree listed below that is: James Stewart(1810-1880) married Katherine Boston(1825-1905) their son is Alfred Stewart(1850-1921) married Nancy Thompson(1852-1903) their son is William C. Stewart(1869-1965) married Josephine Wilson(1871-1937) their son is Edward Jay Stewart(1905-1969) married Anne Gilmore(1910-) Anne Gilmore is the person that typed the note I found and she passed away in 1996. I have nothing other than that to go on and have hit a dead end when trying to prove any of it past Edward Jay Stewart. Anyone know of the eight brothers or the Stewarts I mentioned? However, what you pointed out about the time of Indiana's statehood, etc. is very interesting. I had mentioned that, in James' application to the GAR, he noted (for the only time) that he was b. in "Ohio". Since he was first married in Ohio Cty., In., and since that's contiguous to Swtz. Cty., he may have gotten confused. Now, however, there's another possible clue. In the death cert. for one of James' sons (Edward George Stewart), the "informant" states that James was b. in "Ohio". The "informant" was my grandmother who was a very meticulous woman with a great memory. There's little chance that she would have gotten this wrong, unless she was given wrong information in the first place, or, unless the family was confused about the Indiana statehood issue. Dearborn formed in 1803 from Hamilton County, OH. Franklin, formed 1811 from Clark. Clark in 1801 from Knox. Knox in 1790 from Indiana Territory which included all of IN, parts of Ill, OH, Michigan and Wisconsin. Looks like OH may be the state you want to check out! Even though my Stewarts came from KY to IN per a county history. However that info hasnt gotten metoo far either! Hamilton County, OH was created in 1790 Before that we are talking NW Territory. Iwould look into land records given to particular groups during this period of time. Too many to list here. Google and see what you come up with. VA, NY, CT and MASS all had claims on this area. Wish everyone left a Will with the children's names! Sorry about the mix up. Much researching on these KY Stewarts so hopefully someone will find something to connect them all. Also, parents of your line could not have been from IN as it did not become a state until 1816. Ohio was a state in 1803. Sometimes the parents will say they were born in the state they lived the longest OR that actually became that state after it received its statehood. IE: Many will say they were born in WV in 1780's which of course was VA. Ive seen that for KY as well. If we studied the history we would have better luck in finding our ancestors. I will see if I can help in some way on your line as it may help find mine! Starr Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My "James Philander Stewart" started in Switzerland Cty, Indiana and moved to Daviess Cty., Indiana in the 1840s. In about 1885, he and most of his adult children went to Adair Cty., Missouri. I don't think any of them went to Iowa, although at least one of James' grandchildren did move to Iowa in the 1920s. I've had no luck in finding anything about James' parents or siblings (if he had any). In each of his census resonses, he states that both parents were from Indiana. A strange item though...when he joined the Union Army in 1862, he writes that he was b. Dec., 1822 in Switzerland Cty., In. However, when a joined the Grand Army of the Republic (a veterans' group) in Mo. in 1895, he writes that he was born in "Ohio". Go figure... Hope you have better luck than I've had with him.
