    3. Hello, I am a descendant of Joshua and Mary Stewart. Joshua was born in Pennsylvania c 1815 Mary Jones Stewart was born in Maryland c 1815. They lived in Franklin Co, Pennsylvania with their children, John W, Mary, Ellen, Susan, Sarah and Thomas. They moved to the Wethersfield, Henry Co, Illinois area in the 1850s. They are in the 1860 Census for Wethersfield, IL but Joshua and Mary no longer show up in the census. I think they died between 1860 and 1870 but I can't find where or when. All internet searches have failed. They don't show in the records at the Henry Co.Court house and I don't find them in the Henry Co Genealogical Society Cemetery books. I have followed some of the children. Sarah Amanda is my Great Grandmother. She married William F Smith. Others show up in Nebraska and Arkansas except for John Wesley Stewart. Can't find him anywhere. He was supposed to have had 3 children. Alec, Ella and Elmer. Nothing on them either. Any ideas or help will be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Author: Hellendrung Surnames: Abbott Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/6335.3.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here is a little bit more information about Thomas Abbott William Cutter in his 1913 book below also agrees that George Abbott of Rowley had two sons named Thomas. "New England families, genealogical and memorial: a record of the achievements of her people in the making of commonwealths and the founding of a nation" , Volume 3, 1913 by William Richard Cutter "(The Abbott Line). (I) George Abbott, the immigrant ancestor, was probably born in England, and died in Rowley, Massachusetts, in 1647. He was one of the first settlers of Rowley, coming from England in 1642. He deeded most of his estate to his oldest son, Thomas, before his death. He had two acres granted him for a house lot and had other land. He was one of the thirty contributors towards buying the land of the Rogers Company in Rowley. He had four sons, two of whom were named Thomas, one being called senior, the other junior. This practice was somewhat common in England at that time, but seems to have confused the genealogist of the family, who concludes the younger was adopted. The younger Thomas was apprenticed to John Boynton, and at the death of his father, Humphrey Reynor and George Mighhill were appointed as guardians of the minor sons, George, Nehemiah and Thomas. The elder Thomas had received land from his father, being the eldest son, and was doubtless of age at the time of his fat! her's death. Mark Simons was executor of the estate, and George Abbott's will is referred by the general court to the Salem court, November 11, 1647, though no will has been found. Children: 1. Thomas, Sr., received land from his father by deed of gift; died September, 1659; married, July 13, 1655, Dorothy Swan; resided at Rowley; bequeaths in his will to his brothers George, Nehemiah, and Thomas, in a nuncupative will, dated August 31, 1659. 2. George, mentioned below. 3. Nehemiah. 4. Thomas, Jr. (II) George (2), son of George (1) Abbott, was born in England about 1631, and came to New England with his father about 1642. and lived at Rowley for about fourteen years. In 1655 he settled in that part of Andover, afterwards North Andover, but now Andover Center. He was a tailor and husbandman, and was one of the five wealthiest men in the town. He was a member of Sergeant James Osgood's military company and previously of Sergeant Stevens' company. He was admitted a freeman, May 19, 1669, and was elected constable June 3, 1680. For many years he had charge of the North meeting house at Andover. He had land granted him and his first house was probably on the site occupied by the house of John Bannon in 1900. He died, intestate, March 22, 1688-89, aged about fifty-eight years. He married in Ipswich, April 26, 1658, Sarah, daughter of Ralph and Alice Farnum, who came from England in 1638. She married (second) August 1, 1689, Sergeant Henry Ingalls, and died in 1728, aged nin! ety. Children: George, born January 28, 1659; Sarah, September 6. 1660; died November 6, 1738, married, October 19, 1681, John Faulker; John, August 26, 1662: Mary, March 20, 1664-65, married. May 13, 1687, Lieutenant Stephen Barker; Nehemiah, July 20, 1667; Hannah, September 22, 1668, married, April 18, 1695, James Ingalls; Mehitable. February 17, 1671, died young; Lydia, March 31, 1675, died March 11, 1739. married, November 28, 1695, Henry Chandler; Samuel, May 30, 1678; Mehitable, April 4, 1680; died March 28, 1757, married, June 1, 1701. Gershom Cutter." Also according to "The Boynton family. A genealogy of the descendants of William and John Boynton, who emigrated from Yorkshire, England, in 1638, and setted at Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts" John Boynton the immigrant born in 1614 in England was a tailor. This is interesting because Thomas Abbott, Jr was apprenticed to John Boynton, so he too must have been a tailor or at least he was trained as a tailor. George Abbott, son of George Abbott of Rowley was also a tailor.According to the " Historical Sketches of Andover, Massachusetts" George Abbott settled in Andover in 1655 and lived near the North Meeting House. He served as a sexton and was respected in Andover. His marriage to Sarah Farnum on April 26, 1658 by Mr. Bradstreet was the ninth marriage recorded in the Andover, MA. town register. He was often called in the town records " George Abbott, tailor, " or "George Abbott, Junior" to denote a younger man than the other George Abbott who was an early settler of And! over or " George Abbott of Rowley " because he moved from Rowley to Andover in 1655. All of the circumstantial evidence points to Thomas (d 15 May 1695) as being the son of George Abbott of Rowley, however I still believe this is a hypothesis requiring more proof in order to be considered as factual. Your research supports the conclusion espoused by Lemuel Abbott in "Descendants of George Abbott of Rowley..." that Thomas, Jr. lived in the same George Abbott family in Rowley as Thomas Sr., Nehemiah and George, but that he was a relative and not a son of George, Sr. I just wish we had something more definitive. I agree with your observation that the English baptismal records for the children of George Abbott of Rowley would go a long way to clearing things up. English probate records for Abbotts might also provide a clue. Regards, Bob Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Shirley, Mourning is not my direct line. I was just confused by some info I had received from other researchers about Mourning.  Mourning's brother, William Stewart is my direct line. He was married to Mary Ann Penn.  They had a son, John Stewart who married Lucinda McKissack. John and Lucinda's son was James Madison Stewart and he married Mary Ann Laws.  J.M. Stewart is my 4th g. grandfather.  My line migrated from Macon County, GA,next into Pike County, AL then into NW Florida  I would love to hear about your line.  Angela GENEALOGY: n. 1. [STEWART] Floyd/Buford
    2. Mary Kyritsis
    3. Hello Angela, This is explained in the Stewart Clan Magazine on page 203 of Tome F, the issue of July 1952, in an article that starts off with Richard Stewart of Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Here is the paragraph (broken up for easier reading), which I give in its entirety as it goes into other details of John and Ann (Haw)'s children which might interest you: David-5 Stewart [son of John/Ann Haw], brother of Richard, was born probably in Amherst county, VA. He and his brother Samuel were given three years' schooling by their father's will, 1784, and in 1791 his brother John gave him and his sisters Betsy, Nancy and Sally all the personal estate of their late father which John had bought, and soon thereafter they all removed to Oglethorpe county, Georgia. Nancy married there (license 28 Sep 1797) John FLOYD, and Sally married, it is said, Edmond W. Taylor in Clarke county. This John Floyd, we presume, was the John Floyd of Wilkes county, Georgia, who gave power-of-attorney 14 Feb 1794 to Philip Thurmond of Amherst county, Virginia, to sell his future interest in a tract of 250 acres on the headwaters of Stovall creek in Amherst county, "it being the tract of land whereon Virginia Taylor now lives. It was bequeathed to her by the last will and testament of Daniel BURFORD, late of the state of Virginia, dated 1 May 1787, during her natural life or until she should remove from the land; the remainder to me." Burford's will said "I lend to my daughter Virginia Taylor and her natural son John Floyd Burford 250 acres of land (etc.). I give to my grandson John Floyd Burford, natural son of my daughter Virginia Taylor, my negro boy named Shepherd (etc.). I give to my granddaughter Mourning Burford Stewart my three negroes Phyllys, Nancy and Dick ... Residue of my estate to be equally divided between my granddaughter Mourning Burford Stewart and my sons John Burford and Daniel Burford and my daughter Milly Crews. To my daughter Frances Goodwin, 5 pounds. To my daughter Elizabeth Goodwin, 5 pounds." The will was proved 2 July 1787, Amherst county. Burford had made a deed of gift 5 Aug 1776 of a negro girl to his daughter Virginia Taylor. It would appear, then, that John Floyd Burford became John Floyd and later was John Burford Floyd. The Floyd genealogy is not clear. In "Eminent Virginians" Historical and Biographical Encyclopedia, 1884, R. A Brock, secretary of the Virginia Historical society, said: "William Floyd removed to the county of Amherst, then a wild region, and married there Abidiah, fifth child of Robert and -- (Hughes) Davis. Their eldest son John Floyd was born in 1751. He married in 1769 a Miss Barfoot (Burford), who died within a year, leaving an infant daughter, who was taken in charge by the mother of Mrs Floyd ... In November 1778 he married his second wife, Jane, dtr of Col. John and Margaret (Patton) Buchanan." He removed to Kentucky ... killed in a fight with Indians ..." His daughter Mourning married 13 Ar 1784 Capt. John Stewart of Amherst county. John Floyd, born 24 Apr 1783, in Jefferson county, Kentucky, son of Col. John and Jane (Buchanan) Floyd, became governor of Virginia. Col. John Floyd had brothers Isham, Robert and Charles, all of whom moved to Kentucky. Hope this helps, Mary in Greece You wrote: I am presently at the National Archives searching through Rev. Soldiers, looking for john Stewart m. Anne Hawe. I haven't located the pension yet. However, I did come across John Stewart Jr. 's widow application. Her name was Mourning Buford. I have in my notes she was Mourning Floyd. Can anyone shed light why the name is different. Her daughter Permelia S. Perkins wrote her down as Mourning Buford. Angela Harrell
