The info you posted was uncanny in that all the names you show are connected to my family. My Aunt Belle (Isobel Stewart Mattocks) could be your great grandmother. She was married to John Bell Mattocks. My father Colin was Belle's brother. However they were born in Coatbridge Scotland not Greenock. There were two other siblings who were James and Jean. Jean had twin daughters who still live in Scotland, one in Greenock and one in Helensburg. Aunt Belle had a son Frederick Stewart Mattocks (wife Alma). Fred would be your grandfather and his son Frederick (Rick) would be your father (wife Lois). They have two daughters Brook and Janell. Now if all this coinsides with your family, you and I would be cousins. Wil be happy to hear from you in any case. Tuesday, September 16, 1924 The Morning Chronicle, Halifax, N.S. McHAFFE - STEWART Archdeacon Armitage officated at high noon Monday at the quiet wedding of Chief Stewart A. C. McHaffe, of Royal Mail Steam Packet liner Chaudiere, to Miss Stewart, who arrived in Halifax on the Pittsburgh, from England, to meet her husband to be. The bride was attired in a suit of sand colored cloth, with white small black hat and carried a bouquet of pink and white roses. There were no attendants. The wedding marches were played by the organist.
Hi List, Am looking for someone who might be on this list that lives in the Minneapolis area who is named Mary, married to Bob and has a Sister Diane who is researching their ancestor James Stewart b. abt 1660 in Scotland, probable son of Walter and Isobel of Gartnafuran, and brother to Alexander and to Robert, the Covenanter b. 1655. We have lost touch with changing e-mail addresses. Nora Stewart Yahl

Thank you Nora for the suggestion. I have no evidence as of yet, that any of my Stewarts immigrated to Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia. If anything I have found that they jumped the river from New Jersey to Pennsylvania. My one Stewart lived in New Jersey but join a volunteer group in Pennsylvania to fight in the Civil War. Which I have not been able to explain yet. Why didn't he just join a volunteer group in N.J. ? There was a large migration of people from Burlington, NJ to Salem, Harrison County, West Virginia in the early 1800's. Mixed into that bunch with surnames of Davis, Maxson, Van Horns, Suttons, there were some Stewarts. Maybe by looking at the census and determining where those Stewarts are , you can find the Stewarts that you are looking for. Just a backward suggestion that I sometimes us with success. Hi Gerald, If you are referring to the Reverend David Stuart in son, he had his own Parish. In VA a PARISH was the Church of England always. He was educated, education just like today can bring wealth. He married well and was a predominant man in his community. His family intermarried with Wealth, and so they acquired wealth. Remember, very few could even spell or sign their names back then, much less write a sermon. Most men who could sign their name, had the equivalent of barely a 2ND grade education, if that. A very good book to read if you have not already done so is "Albion`s Seed" by David Hatchett Fischer, or anything that this man has wrote. Albion`s Seed, is not just about Colonial Va, but also abut MA. and other Colonies. Perhaps someone well-read in Scottish history and the Kirk can answer my question: How did a minister, especially the Kirk of Scotland acquire a great deal of wealth? Or was he a minister in the Church of England? I know that some ministers in Scotland were granted lands by their fathers but what about in the States?
Oops! In my recent post, a word was misspelled and I did not chose the correction appropriately! I was meaning descendants of Stewarts and chose the wrong correction with spellcheck. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nora Yahl" <norayahl@charter.net> Subject: [STEWART] Stewarts in Pennsylvania Hi! Trying to find a place for my "orphan" Stewart. He is not an orphan, but I can't make him fit into my Londonderry Line. In the book by B. Frank Severance on the Descendants of Walter Stewart, on pages 32 through 35, Joseph Stewart the son of John and Elizabeth Forsythe Stewart (Charter John of Londonderry, NH) writes to his son John about the descendants of the Stewarts in a rather oblique way as to not give anything very solid to stand upon.
Hi! Trying to find a place for my "orphan" Stewart. He is not an orphan, but I can't make him fit into my Londonderry Line. In the book by B. Frank Severance on the Descendants of Walter Stewart, on pages 32 through 35, Joseph Stewart the son of John and Elizabeth Forsythe Stewart (Charter John of Londonderry, NH) writes to his son John about the decadency of the Stewarts in a rather oblique way as to not give anything very solid to stand upon. He speaks of "Old Father James of Colrain. "He had a catalogue of the house of Stewarts for many hundred years, but son Alx carried it away with him to Pennsylvania." I have never been able to ascertain exactly who "old Father James of Colrain" is. But I have a greater interest in the son Alx which seems to be a shortened version of Alexander. My question is: Any information out there about this Alexander and/or documentation of his parentage? If I find this, perhaps we will have a home for my "orphan" Old James. Hi Lydia, Caroline Co is considered almost helplessly burned, so is Hanover and King George. Have you checked out the LVA web site, it has info on the "Burned Counties" and what is available. It also lists the worst to least burned counties. You may be thinking about the Reverend David Stuart and his son the Rev. William Stuart of the King George area. This is a very impressive line, they were very wealthy and later lived on the banks of the Potomac River, not far from Mount Vernon, the Washington Estate. According to historians, the Rev David Stuart and wife Jane Gibbons, came from Scotland. He was educated in Edinburgh, as was his son William who took over the Vestry(Parish) for him. All in all, I`d venture to say the earliest Stewart`s/Steward`s/Stuart`s in Colonial VA were from England. This would be the era of very early 1600`s to late 1600`s, after that came the Scots, Scot Irish etc. Almost all settlers to VA in this time frame were English, and they settled in Tidewater (East VA) VA, from the North near Maryland to the South near NC. Keep a look out for the mmovie coming in Dec, "The New World", staring the ever so cute Colin Farrell as Captain John Smith. The whole movie was filmed in Jamestown, Williamsburg area. HI; I am new to the Stewart List and Iam searching for the family above Margaret Stewart. Margaret was born April 1, 1843 at South River Lake Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia and married Hiram Alexander Grant. Her father was Allen Stewart and her mother Susan? She had a sister Isabel. Any information on this Stewart family would be appreciated. Grant
Does anyone on this list know anything about the William STEWART who signed a petition with others from Caroline County, Virginia, in 1785? The petition was regarding the pernicious influences then in practice on election days. There are two Wiliams in my line and Caroline is much closer to Hanover than Henry and Albemarle Co. Also interested in the ministers from King George County, both STEWARTs, but no christian names given in Bishop Meade's Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Were these Scots or English STEWARTs? Thanks for your help. Lynda .
