Surnames: Stewart, Haight Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/7274 Message Board Post: Greetings fellow Stewarts! Russ Stewart, my father, was born in Holyoake, Mass in 1909. He had a brother Jack (or John) and sisters Ada and Dorothy (Dot). Their father was Alexander Stewart and mother Ellen Moss. Alexander died, and Ellen remarried and moved with her children to Bridgeport, Conn. I am at a blank wall, and I know I have a cousin David out there and several others. Want to trace the family back, but have no place to start. Ada married Alden Haight and had 2 sons Alden Jr (deceased) and I don't have the other cousins name. Dot married Bob someone, and then remarried someone with the last name of Milton, i believe. Any help would be so gratefully received.
Does anyone know if this line relates to a Joseph Stewart (b: ca 1750, d:1823) and Levinah Unkown (b: ca 1755) who emigrated from Pennsylvania to Mason County, Ky ( 1790) and soon after to Adams County, Ohio? I have suspected that Joseph's father was named James. Family tradition maintains this Stewart line arrived in America in 1730 from Glasgow... and settled in "Passaic, VA". I believe this may be a case of muddled oral tradition. My hypothesis currently is that these Stewarts originally settle in the Passaic River Valley of New Jersey and then later moved to Virginia/Pennsylvania. But the other possibility is that these Stewarts did settle in Virginia, but on a river with a name that would evolve into a family memory as "Passaic". I may have located this Joseph Stewart in Morgan Township, Washington County, PA by 1784. But this Joseph Stewart and family are indicated in the 1790 census of Washington County, and this conflicts with the tradition that Joseph Stewart (among a party of five families) arrived at Limestone, KY via keelboat and moved a few miles south of the Ohio River to Washington, KY. Ringing anyone's bell? ps: to _park@digital_ (mailto:park@digital) There is a Park Stewart in this line of Stewarts. Park was born about the time of the Civil War to Alexander Stewart and Matilda Grimes in Brown County, Ohio

So it's a possibility that there is a connection..

Howdy Listers... Shona Nollaig, Merry Christmas... Happy Kwanza... Happy Chanukah.... Happy Ramadan... Happy Holidays, Melikalilkimaka, whatever, &c. OK... here's the drill: Do NOT send test messages to the list. 1000+/- folks don't *really* need to see messages that say, essentially.... tap, tap, tap... anyone on that side of the glass? Is this list working? Where's my mail? Especially this time of year when the Aussies are at the beach, those in the northern hemisphere are shoveling snow or dodging raindrops and everyone preparing for some holiday or another. Sometimes the list is just slow. Sometimes it is because life is happening... even your Admin took this past weekend off... *gasp* to celebrate her birthday. :) [please do not send greetings to the list] When you think you are not getting mail as you should there are a few things you can do... a) check the archives to see if there are posts since the last one you received in your mail box. -- if no, then probably no one has posted -- if yes, then the issue is on your end... check your filters and check with your ISP b) Check the helpdesk for messages re the server being down or issues with ISPs bouncing or delaying mail c) IF you simply MUST send a "test" message.... do not send one that is a typical "test, test" message... instead...send one of genealogical value... a query or a transcription ---------- if it does not show up in the archives, contact the Admin at Stewart-admin@rootsweb.com ------------ do not write to others re the "problem" as they are unable to assist you... only the admin has access to tools, etc. for this list... and they are limited, but troubleshooting advice, etc. is not so limited. -------------Check to ensure the settings on your email client [Mozilla, Outlook, etc] are set to plain text and that you have not included an attachment. ------------ If *gawd forbid* the admin does not respond within 24 hours [may be off at the Scottish Games, celebrating birthdays, Christmas, or &c], then contact the Help Desk and they will be glad to walk you through a troubleshooting session and help resolve the "no mail" situation... but do this ONLY as the last step, not the first. As my mom used to say.... "If you want to receive mail, you must write mail."... so... if the list is slow...take a look... when was the last time you posted? Start a discussion, post a query, post some data --- nice present for other listers, perhaps? Happy happy, Merry merry, and for those curmudgeons... a hearty Bah Humbug! Hey Rick! Didn't you tell me your Stewarts came out Siberia? :-) Thought you said Ivan & Maria? :-) Have a great Holiday Season! Regards from 6600 ft, Dick Stewart zzzzzzz....... =-=-=-==-=- Merry Christmas List, Would like to re discuss relation options with anyone having a John and Mary Stewart in North Carolina ca 1750-1780. Two known sons of this couple were Jacob ca 1775 and Noah 1785. DNA tests have not shown kinship with other NC Stewart families, SC and VA same results. Known historical records haven't been much of a help. Results and genealogy details are posted on the web at: www.martygrant.com. and www.angelfire.com/stewartdna. Semper Fidelis Rick Stewart (NC)

I've just joined the list and am fairly new to Stewart research. I have been receiving messages for several days (not a whole lot, but quite active) and don't see a problem with messages going through. I'm looking for the same Stewarts as Dick Stewart of Carefree, Arizona, the ones who were in Newberry Co., SC in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Dick has been a great help and has generously shared his information with me over the years. My Stewart, Rosannah, daughter of Joseph Stewart of Newberry, married Robert Boyd, probably in Newberry. Robert moved to Meriwether County, GA sometime between 1830 (Newberry census) and 1833 (land purchase in Meriwether). He died there in 1846-1847 (will and probate). We are not sure whether Rosannah came with Robert or whether she died in Newberry, possibly prompting his move to Georgia to be with most of his children. Robert's burial place has not been found and he is not listed in any cemetery records for the county. We believe he may be in a private burial plot which has not been identified and may be unmarked. There are a couple of these near his land (and near or on the land of his children and relatives) in Meriwether. I am very interested in any Stewarts who may have moved from Newberry to the Georgia counties of Meriwether, Troup, Coweta, Spalding, Fayette, Carroll, Pike, and Upson, or to Chambers County, AL. My Boyds or their relatives settled or passed through those areas. I plan to do some serious Stewart research at the Meriwether Courthouse sometime after the first of the year. It would make sense, with the heavy Boyd (and many other families from Newberry) migration, that some of the Stewarts may have followed the same path. Will post anything I find to the list. Merry Christmas to all! Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA
Thanks Dick for the reply....
