    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stewart, Crabtree, Wilkinson, Carter Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AmJBAIB/7318 Message Board Post: Hi! My name is Marian Warren, and my E-mail address is: Mjswspokane@comcast.net My maiden name was Stewart. Wiliam S. was my gr-gr-grandfather. He married Zilliah Ann Crabtree, daughter of Mack Harrison Crabtree and Lucy Jane Wilkinson. William and Zilliah lived in Franklin County from at least 1860 t0 1880, as they were on the census records. They both died there. According to widow's pension records, William was born October 19, 1825(23?) in Jackson County, Alabama. William and Zilliah had a total of 12 children. One, Francis Marion was my gr-grandfather. Francis Marion Stewart married Martha Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Meredith and Nancy Ann Carter. F.M. and Martha E. had a total of 14 children, and somewhere along the line they ended up in Arkansas. One of their sons was my grandfather James Christopher Stewart, and my father was Carl Marion Stewart. J.C. was born in Arkansas (although there was huge debate about this--another story.) Carl was born in Oklahoma, I was born in Kansas. I have no info about William's parents and wonder if anyone out there does? If so, or if you have any info about the family, please contact me. Thanks so much!! Marian Stewart Warren

    3. Probably no connection but my ggg grandfather William Stewart (b.1804) from Harrison County, Ky. married Mary Ann Richey his first wife who died in Clermont County, Ohio in 1829. It is right next to Kentucky. At that time people from Pa. and Va. were immigrating to the area I believe. New to researching my own family, I am interested in the history of my plates, and the family of the Stewart's and Montgomery's. I refferenced the couple on the LDS site and found they were married in Washington County, IA.

    3. Hi Erica, I am not sure about KY, but in NC and VA all original wills, deeds and grants, and probate papers are filed at the Archives. What you will find in that county in KY are transcribed documents. Of course courthouses all over the USA are known to have "loose papers" in boxes thrown in the basements of courthouses, that have not been transcribed yet. You may ask to go down there and check. I know several who have done this and have been successful. Bring latex or cotton gloves so as to not damage any of these old documents. 3. Erica, If you look at the court record books, you will note that consecutive records are usually in the same handwriting, that of the clerk of court or an assisitant. To find original wills, go to the probate file if it exists and there you will hopefully find the original will and in many cases a wealth of other information - where the heirs are living, guardianships that have been established, etc. etc. All the old official court records in Deed Books, Wills, Probate Books, etc. that I have examined in Texas, Louisiana, Missaissippi, and Alabama have been transcribed. I have never seen an original document in such a book. The originals have all been filed in little boxes, cases, tied packages, or such and include all the documents relating to the case. Marriage Book records, on the other hand, typically have valid signatures on the license applications. I have seen digital copies of wills as filed in Hardin County, Kentucky, and they appear to have been copied by the Recorder into record books. I have another photo-copy of a hand written will, and I assumed it was "original" but the note at the end states that it is a true copy and gives the name of the recorder. Was there a "usual practice" as to filing original wills and also copying them into public records? I notice that signatures are indicated with a s/ and the name.
