    3. Becky, Not sure what maps you have been looking at but none of the territory that became the State of TN was ever part of SC. TN was, however, part of NC originally, and part of the border between SC and NC was in dispute for some time, with eventually the disputed section being included in present day SC. So technically speaking I guess your ancestor born in 1786 could have been born in that section of SC, then claimed by NC, which would have been included in what would eventually become TN ,but I don't think he nor his son would have been aware of that when giving their place of birth to the census taker. The same situation existed between NC, VA, and TN, making research for those of us who had ancestors in the TN area very early, a little tricky. Becky wrote: My gggrandfather Isaac Stewart was born abt. 1786 in either SC or TN. The reason for the descrepancy is that all through the censuses he is born in SC. Then in the 1900 census this son states he was born in TN. I thought this odd until I found maps from 1783, 1787 and 1800. They all show SC with a long tale that runs across the bottom what becomes TN in 1800. I wonder if my Isaac Stewart was born in a part of SC that later became TN.

These books are usually supported by advertising (there are lots of ads for businesses of the times), and sometimes by individual supporters (I believe). There are also lists of clubs and societies, such as Colonial Dames and DAR. The Albany listing is: Mr. & Mrs. Charles M. STUART, 157 Lancaster Street (indented beneath Charles is) John McH, Charles M. Jr, and Thomas A. The Schenectady listing is: Mr & Mrs. Samuel B. STEWART, 7 Stratford Road. Hope this helps someone. 3. HI I'm jumping in here. So much of the info I'm reading about these Stewarts have similarities to my Stewarts. It would be nice if we could find the connection. It might open a lot of doors. My gggrandfather Isaac Stewart was born abt. My Stewarts, along with Ratliffs and Rileys moved to KY around 1806, then TN about 1817, IL in 1829, AR in 1837, TX in 1846 and OK in 1900. If any of this is familiar to anyone I would love to chat any maybe break down some brick walls. Becky http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~bekk1227

Surnames: Stewart Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AmJBAIB/7318.2.1 Message Board Post: Hi Teresa! Glad to hear from you!! No, I have not done any research on Hamilton Stewart, but he sounds like a possiblity to be in the line, especially since he had sons in Jackson County, Alabama. I know from Zilliah Ann's widow's pension records from the Civil War, that William S. was supposed to have been born in Alabama in 1825. Do you have any more info on this Hamilton or any of the other Stewarts? Do you have any paper documentation? Everyone thinks I'm nuts cause I'm not putting everything on the computer disk ( although I have some individual writeups saved,) but rather put it on paper. And paper documentation is what I am seeking in the form of: family stories or records, Bible records, marriage records, wills, etc., etc. Actually, I just answered another person with the names of William S. and Zilliah Ann's children. And, there may actually be 13. I have three sources for the names of the children. The first is census records. Is gets confusing, but I don't know any way to do it but just list it the way I found it. The 1860 U.S. census for Franklin Co., Tenn. listed these children: 1. H.E. 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Z.. A. The 1870 census (same place) lists the children as: 1. Kitty (should be Hetty--Hettie) 2. Francis 3. Mack 4. Lilly (should be Zilly) 5. Lucy 6. Maria 7. Eliza (female) 8. James The 1880 census (same place) lists the children as: 1. Hetty E. 2. F. Mc. C. 3. Caroline A. 4. James W. 5. (Jinney?) 6. (Jerry?) 7. Lilley My next source is Zilliah Ann's widow's pension from William S.'s service in the Civil War. He was on the Confederate side, and I can send you more info on this if you want. I also have the pension papers (they are pretty hard to read, but with patience you can do it.) These pension papers listed the names of their 10 surviving children. A sideline here--later in life, Zilliah Ann was committed to an insane asylum by her family. It was probably just old age, dementia, or alzheimer's. I had a relative on my Mom's side committed also because he had epilepsy. Thank God times have changed from those days. Anyway, I have those papers also. From the pension papers, the children are: 1. Hettie 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Zilla Ann 5. Lucy 6. Kiney 7. Jim 8. Jennie 9. Lillie 10. J. M. My third source of the names of William S. and Zilliah Ann's children is a family tree written by Eliza Woodall titled "William Crabtree of Crow Creek." (Zilliah Ann was a Crabtree.) These are: 1. Hettie Elizabeth 2. Francis Marion 3. Mack 4. Zilly Ann 5. Lucy 6. Maria Margaret 7. Caroline A.---"Kiney" 8. Eliza John---that's what is says? 9. James W. 10. Jennie 11. Lilly 12. Jeremiah E. Now, according to this source, Wm. and Zilliah had another son right around the time of the Civil War. For some reason, he was raised by his grandfather Mack Harrison Crabtree. His name was Ovia Virgil, and he was supposed to be the 8th child of Wm. and Zilliah. He went on to become a successful businessman, and he took the surname of Crabtree. I think it is rather sad that he is not listed on any other records. Well, I hope you can figure all this out; it may be more than you wanted. Ha! But, I figure the more sources you have the better chance you have of getting correct info. Hope to hear back from you! If you can supply me with any more info I would appreciate it! And if you want the records I mentioned just let me know. Bye for now. Marian Warren

Actually, I have three sources for the names of the children of William S. Stewart and Zilliah Ann Crabtree Stewart. The first is the U.S. 1860, Franklin Co., Tenn. census. It lists the first four children. (I don't know why I never followed up on the 1870 census??) My second source is the widow's pension that Zilliah Ann applied for in the early 1900's. William S. served in the Civil War on the Confederate side, so his pension is with the state of Tennessee. I have a copy (hard to read) if you are interested. It lists 10 children. but says that there were 12. My third source in the family tree record composed by Eliza Woodall intitled "William Crabtree of Crow Creek." The 1860 census lists the children as: 1. H.E. 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Z.A. Now don't you just love these census takers that used initials?! They drive me nuts! These are: Hettie E., Francis Marion, Mack, and Zilla (Zilly) Ann. The widow's pension records list their children as: 1. Hettie E. 2. Francis M. 3. Mack 4. Zilla Ann 5. Lucy 6. Kiney 7. Jim 8. He was born right around the time of the Civil War and was raised by his grandfather Mack Harrison Crabtree. He grew up to be a successful businessman and took the surname of Crabtree. Don't you think that's a little sad, that's he's not mentioned on the pension papers, etc.? Times were very hard then and the Stewarts were poor (nothing new there! Ha!)so you can assume that maybe it was because of this?? Now, it was my gr-gr-grandfather Francis Marion who moved to Arkansas. I haven't followed the rest of the kids out yet to see where they ended up. Francis Marion had married Martha Elizabeth Carter. They started out in Newton County, Arkansas (where my grandfather James Christopher was born,) but most of their lives they were in Stone County. Newton, Stone, Searcy, and Independence Counties go straight across the state from west to east.. My grandmother was born in Independence County. I hope this information will help some Oh, Francis Marion and Martha E. had 14 children, so they did their fair share to contribute to the population of Arkansas. Ha! I can dig in there a little deeper if you are interested? Would love to hear back from you and find out how you tie into the Stewart line! I love to hear different people's stories. If you have any information that would help me, it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again! Bye for now. Marian Warren
