    3. Hi Marian, My grandmother, Ida May STEWART, who was born in Missouri, also said there were Indian ancestors in her family, but she had no idea who or how far back. I'm having a hard time finding my STEWART ancestors. I don't know their names, but they were born in Pennsylvania, moved to West Virginia, which at that time was still Virginia, had children born there, and evidently died. One son, Henry STEWART , moved to McLean Co., Illinois, married and died in Illinois. Henry's brother, Ephraim STEWART, was my gg-grandfather, he also married my gg-grandmother, Leah GROFF/GROVE in McLean Co., Illinois, but then they moved to Missouri. These two men had a sister named Lucinda STEWART, and a sister named Susan STEWART, who married a man named SHUMARD. Lucinda and Susan also lived in Missouri. These STEWART children were all born between 1809 and 1820. I'm beginning to believe there may have been a marriage somewhere further back between a STEWART and an Indian maiden. Dee **************************************************************************** ************************************************* > Do you know, or think, that there is Indian in the Stewart line? I had always heard there was, but my Aunt Helen says it comes from her mother's side, the Lays. > > Bye for now. Marian Warren > > > ==== STEWART Mailing List ==== > Looking for cousins? 3. HI all, Found this article about death in childbirth, thought it was interesting and decided to share. Probably 1-5 children also did not live to see 5 years old between the 17th and 18th century. Makes you wonder, if we could add to our family trees, more so when there is such a space in between births. The known children are Martha b. ca 1800 m. Abram Tolles, Frances m. Benjamin Bidlock, Abigail b. 1802 m. Abraham Thomas, Caroline b. 1804 m. Rev. Morgan Sherman, Mary and then according to census records there should be two sons and one more daughter, I believe. It may be that the sons are James b. 1796 and Lazarus b. 1806. I am particulary interested in the James b. 1796 if he indeed is a son of James and Hannah. If you have more on this family would appreciate hearing. I also believe that the father James b. 1768 is a son of Capt. Lazarus Stewart and Martha Espy. There doesn't seem to be much info on this James b. 1768 as he died about 1808 and have not found much on him.

I have his wife's (Zilliah Ann Crabtree) widow's pension papers which state that William S. was born in Jackson, County, Alabama. I know nothing yet about his parents or family before his time. 1. Re: ADMIN NOTE: Please Read: How to get the most out of the Stewart Board: response to "what are lists?"
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/7363.1.1 Message Board Post: [Apologies to the Stewart Listers for having this message gateway, however, it is pertinent to reply on board, rather than directly to Bob. Others may share his question.] Hello Bob: As you access the boards via Ancestry.UK, you may not be aware of the free site Rootsweb.com that Ancestry supports. The boards are accessible via either interface. It is not necessary to maintain an Ancestry subscription in order to post to the boards. Whereas Ancestry.com has many databases and resources they charge fees to access, they also house the resources for Rootsweb.com, which has been online for some 10 or so years now. There are databases, websites, bulletin boards [same ones you access via Ancestry, just a different apperance], genealogical hints and helps, mailing lists and more. Visit http://www.rootsweb.com to view the entire list of resources. The mailing lists allow you to discuss, in real time, your genealogical interests and enquiries. One subscribes to any of the lists they may desire and selects to receive them in mail mode or digest mode. The difference being the manner in which the messages of the day are delivered. Mail mode is single messages delivered as your fellow subscribers send them off "to the list." Digest mode is a compilation of a number of posts within a time frame or size limitation, wherein the messages are received in one larger message every 12 or more hours, depending on how the list is set. One must subscribe to the list in order to be able to post to the list. The archives can be viewed without subscription. Subscription is free. People who are actively searching a particular surname find that the lists are more satisfactory for their purpose than the boards as the response, generally, is more immediate than those for board posts, which sometimes are not responded to for months or years. Boards require people to be proactive in visiting the internet and looking to see what has been posted. Lists send mail directly to your in box. And to confuse matters a bit more, Rootsweb/Ancestry.com has enacted a way to allow board posts to be immediately posted to the lists, however, the list posts do not travel back to the board. It is a one way exchange of information. Not all boards are gatewayed. The Admin of the Board and the List must agree to open the gateway... and it is not the best option for all lists, so many are not gatewayed. Lists are open to public perusal by people around the world at any time. There are two types of archives.... browsable and interactive search. View a listing of the lists here: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Those particular to the Stewart name will be found here: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/s/stewart.html The Stewart-L@rootsweb.com is the oldest of the Stewart lists and welcomes posts re any spelling of the surname, from any place, in any point of time. It is the most highly populated of all the Stewart surname lists. However, even though there are at times 1000 subscribers, most of the listers lurk and never post. They read the posts in hope that a cousin will stumble by and find them. Others are more active and posts do fly in flurries. The direction of the list is entirely left to the group to direct. The focus changes as people begin discussion. The Southern USA group seems to be the strongest voice of late, although the Northerners do chime in some. Others are encouraged to open dialogue regarding their area of interest and geographic location and migration of their Stewarts. Years ago, when I first joined there was more discussion of the Stewarts in Scotland. Stewart Surname List Archives will be found here: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/STEWART/ http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/?list=STEWART Take a look also for the varient spellings, should you want to have a more narrow focus and less incoming mail. And there is also the Stewart-non-USA list for those who have no research in the USA and sometimes feel overwhelmed by "Yank" posts. :) It is a "Yank-free post zone." And should your interests include genetic genealogy, you will want to also consider the Stewart-DNA list, which exists to support the Stewart DNA Projects. This provides an arena to discuss both genealogy and the DNA process in more detail. I hope this responds effectively to your query. Should you have more questions, please write me directly. Click on my name as Author, and you will see my personal email address, or also, click on Links and Announcements and you will find it there as Admin Contact Information. Yours Aye, Lauren M. 3. Wednesday, December 5, 1928 The Halifax Chronicle, Halifax, N.S. WILLIAM D. STEWART NEW GLASGOW, Dec 4 - A familiar figure in Pictou County and an interesting link with the past has been severed in the death here recently of William D. Stewart, a son of the late Rev. John Stewart for many years one of the leading Presbyterian ministers. The late Mr. Stewart had been associated with the newspaper of East Pictou during most of his life at different times here connected with the Enterprise, the Eastern Chronicle, the Evening News, an the Free Lance. His contributions dealt largely with the history of the County, with which he was widely conversant. The funeral was held this afternooon from the home of Miss Elizabeth Campbell. Interment at Duff Cemetery. The service was conducted by Rev. Dr. A. H. Denoon, assisted by Rev. Dr. Munro and Rev. Dr. Clarence MacKinnon of Halifax.

    2. Dear Listers: Tuesday is St. Valentine's Day. In America it has been a traditon for a number of years to send messages of love and affection on this day. They have become known as "valentines." I thought it might be a good time to encourage you to post marriage records or stories of how your ancestors met, fell in love and married... or arranged marriages! And if you have a closer family story to tell, that is welcome too as it is part of your family history or herstory. <g> The best valentine I ever received was my daughter. Tuesday will be her 29th birhday. Yours Aye, Lauren Stewart List Admin

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/7363 Message Board Post: Dear Stewart Board Users: To get the best results from using any of the Rootsweb/Ancestry boards, please take time to read the FAQ, RULES, HELP and Links & Announcements as shown on every board page. The L&A will be different on each board and will also provide the Board Admin's contact information. PLEASE do not create subject lines that are "Location + Surname" only... as in "seeking all Stewarts from Timbuktu". They create a mishmosh of totally unrelated posts and actually are better posted to the LOCATION Board, rather than the SURNAME board. And, frankly, it creates lots of work for the Admin(s) who must "maintain the integrity of the boards" and disentangle such items and provide more clear subject lines that reflect the content of the message. It also better serves your research to create a new post for your common forename "Alexander", "Walter", "Mary", etc. rather than reply to another message that contains them, UNLESS there is more of a connection. If the forename is the only match to the data in the other post, it should be a stand alone post instead of a reply on one that actually is unrelated to your line of research. Make use of the SURNAMES BOX. It can greatly enhance your experience and rate of reply. It is what drives the Advanced Search engine. Per the RULES: ..................... Surname Box: Only surnames (last names) should be listed in the Surname Box, and each should be separated by a comma. The Surname Box is used to index the surnames in your message and is not to be used for listing surnames not included in the message text. ......................... Many posters get confused and think the surnames box is to put all the names they are interested in or researching in it. ONLY the surnnames that are in the body of your message should be inserted in this box. Otherwise searchers will get false positive results when they type in the surname they are seeking. Also -- this enables you to post ONE copy of a message to those boards where there may be multiple spellings/variations, instead of copying your post to other boards. Multiposts, as they are called, will be deleted when discovered. So... pick the preferred variation of your surname of interest [Stewart vs Stuart vs Steward, etc.] So long as you have the variant spelling in the body of your message and include it in the surname box, it will not matter which board the researcher is viewing. If they use the Advanced Search Engine and search by surname, they will find your post in their results. I adopted this board after it had been established for several years. I manage fairly well to spot items "needing fixing" on the newer posts. However, if in your use of the board and reseach you spot things that could stand some attention from the Admin, please do use the "Report Abuse" link and let me know! If it is a surname box that has not been properly used and needs "clean up", you merely need state "surnames box" and I will look to see what is needed. However, I will also add here, that Admins are not required to insert surnames in the surname boxes that have been left blank. That is a ton of work. And although I would prefer all the posts to have other than blank boxes, I do not have time to go fill in the box for those who did not either know to or choose to. Chatty posts are best suited to the lists. Board rules are less flexible than that of the lists and the culture requires more straightforward genealogy and data be posted. If you want to thank someone that is great... consider doing it in private. By clicking on "Author" you will see the email address of the person who posted the message you are reading. Go ahead and write to them off the board. Be considerate in your posting that all that posts here is "gatewayed" to the Stewart List and some 1000 subscribers [census count changes daily and fluctuates]. Consider subscribing to the Stewart list if this is your current area of interest. If this is a fleeting interest, consider that you can search the archives of the list to supplement your research without having to subscribe to the list. And to the Stewart DNA List, if DNA and genetic genealogy are part of your research tool box. Most of all, have fun! Yours Aye, Lauren M. Boyd, FSA Scot Stewart Board & List Admin

    2. Nora Yahl
    3. Lisa, Yes I saw it and it was the second part of the story. Very interesting to say the least. I was surprised that they could do both the maternal and paternal lines. I rather think that this program had access to much more sophisticated lab techniques than most. Probably had a lot more funding than any of us could hope to get on our lines. I smiled when Oprah was not Zulu! My imagery was definitely changed by this two part program. I had always thought that all slaves came from areas around the Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Angola and the Portuguese Colony. It was of interest that my migration theories that I rely so heavily upon in my research played out in this story as well, with the historians validating by migrations. Nora in St. Louis
