    1. [STEWART] Naomi Stewart Johnson - Youngstown, Ohio to L.A.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Contribution Surnames: Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/9946/mb.ashx Message Board Post: LOS ANGELES - Naomi Stewart Johnson died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014 at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Naomi was born March 13, 1920, in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) a daughter of Herbert and Martha Henderson Stewart. Naomi attended the Youngstown City Schools. In 1937, Naomi married the love of her life, Raymond Johnson, who died in 1979. >From an early age, Naomi displayed great musical and acting ability. She was called upon both in school and at the Mill Creek Park playground by playground director, Mr. Walter (Farmer) Shoals to participate in various programs. She moved to Hollywood in the early 50s and she became a beauty queen and the first black "Miss Powers" of the famed John Robert Powers Schools. She modeled for Sepia Magazine and was featured on the cover and throughout the magazine in its August of 1962 issue. Being the multi-talented person that she was, she became a modeling instructor in high schools in Los Angeles. She was also a well-respected professional in the recording industry, working with Nat King Cole, the Rolling Stones and many others. Naomi was also a photo-journalist and photographed many celebrated personalities over the years. Naomi was shown much love over the years by her loving family. She always talked about how much she enjoyed the Sunday phone conversations with her nephew, Cameron Stewart Jr., until his death in 2008. Her great-niece, Tracy Turner, who followed in Naomi's footsteps as a photographer, learned much about the business through their loving conversations. Jerald and Earlene, lovingly traveled to Los Angeles recently to be with her. Naomi leaves to mourn her passing, her brother, Cameron H. Stewart of Youngstown; her nieces, Marthella (Ronald) Allen, Sylvia Stewart, and Robyn Stewart, all of Youngstown; her nephews, James (Rosalynd) Stewart and Jerald (Earlene) Stewart, all of Youngstown, and Dane (Rita) Stewart of Spring, Texas; a host of great-nieces, nephews; and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Robert and Leonard Stewart; her nephew, Robert Stewart Jr.; and niece, Donna Stewart. The family wishes to thank the Chalet Nursing facility for the loving care given to their loved one over the last four years and to her loving and special niece, Willa Allen who displayed unconditional love. Naomi lovingly donated her body to the UCLA Medical school. A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Ms. Naomi Stewart Johnson will be held Saturday, Feb 8, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Washington Funeral Home in Youngstown, Ohio.
