    1. ADMIN NOTE: -->Re: [STEWART] Re: Steward Surname for Middle name
    2. Dear Gentle Listers: Seems it is time for another reminder...... Please match your subject line to the topic in your message. This thread is drifting. Also... a reminder... discussion of Stewart DNA is to move to the Stewart DNA list. This is not to say there is no room for mention of it on this list. However, the other list is there for the discussion and further exploration. Believe it or not some folks still are not interested in the topic! And I will add my experience with surnames as middle names.... I find more often than not when tracking I have found them to be the surname of the mother of the father, and by extension when the research is of a Scot here in the USA, it tracks back to a paternal grandmother.... being the mother of a father way back when. This has borne out more times than not, in my experience and those I have suggested it to....broke a couple of brick walls exploring in this manner. Yours Aye, Lauren Stewart List Admin Rootsweb Volunteer since 1996

    1. Re: [STEWART] Stewart use of surnames as middle names for children?
    2. I had an aunt who was doing the family genealogy and searched and searched for a relative with the surname her own mother carried as her middle name. She finally thought to ask her mother (duh!), and it turned out to be the name of the doctor who delivered her. Great disappointment to my aunt, but funny to me. So yes, people did sometimes get middle names that had no direct family connection. Ida

    2. This is no surprise to me -- my youngest brother's middle name is from the doctor who delivered him. A year ago we visited the memorial as visitors but came home with a mission in our hearts. As we gazed over the beautifully manicured acres and the 17,202 American graves, it was obvious only a few families had ever visited their graves. I stepped into the soft grass and focused my camera on one of the white crosses, a grave of an Ohio soldier. A strange calmness was in the air as I walked a few more steps and a cross of an Indiana soldier lay square in my path. The letters of the inscription on the marker was bolder than ever, here lay a soldier from my home state. At that moment a quiet brainstorm aroused my humble thoughts. I wondered if I could locate any of the families of these men. My stride became more defined and within a few moments I had located and photographed eight more graves. Since those gut-wrenching but touching moments we have energized our efforts in finding the families of these American men from Indiana. We have located well over 100 and have delivered the FREE photographs to them via email. Please visit our website and see the men we have honored and the families we have assisted in finding a more genuine closure of a horrible tragedy. http://fizkid.tripod.com/ Our success in finding the families was the result of journalists, amateur genealogists, historians, historical societies, librarians and lots of wonderful Hoosiers and those with Indiana ties across America. During our search we have also reached families from other states as well and have filled special requests for photos from the Manila American Cemetery. We presently have photographed only the graves of the Indiana soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen; however we have photographed all of the names that are engraved on the "Tablets of the Missing". We offer them free of charge to anyone who asks. We ask for your help in finding their families. 3. My immediate family, even down to my grand-nieces and nephews, has always used family names for middle names. But in other branches I have found it isn't always a real clue. One named his son after the doctor who had helped at his birth, another named a son after a close friend. It took quite a while for me to abandon that one as a clue but I did track it down. So use with care. Also, all my nice Scots totally abandoned the practice of children's first names after father, mother etc. just as soon as they landed on these shores. 3. Thanks everyone for your interesting answers. We all know that some children received the full name of Presidents or other famous figures. However many seem to have middle names that are surnames. I suppose sometimes these were family friends. In my case I wonder if my gggg grandfather William Stewart's mother's maiden name might have been Cole as the daughter bearing this middle name is the eldest child. The second daughter has her own mother's first name. I don't know for sure who was the mother of this William so keep wondering if she could have been a Cole. William was born in 1766 in Virginia and I will need to find out if a Stewart male married a female Cole in the right time frame and in what I think is the right county. I asked the question to see if anyone had some inside knowledge about this type of naming and also felt it might help others think about where the surnames used as middle names in their families came from.
