Dear Mary: Thanks for the resource... forwarded to the Boyd list. I found there are 144 Boyds listed at the site. Yours Aye, Lauren
Hello all, This information was sent to me by someone subscribed to the Derry List (No. Ireland). There is an 1841/1851 census reconstruction available online. Basically it says the census information comes from the time when the Old Age Pension Act was introduced in 1908. Because individuals applying for the pension did not have birth certificates to prove their age, the pension office used census data to find the applicant with his or her family and verify age. These census searches could be done because at the time, the censuses still existed (they were later lost in 1922). The census information for the applicant was recorded, and this is what still exists today. Sometimes the data is brief, and other times the whole family was recorded. It is not a complete picture of the whole census because it is based only on those who applied for a pension. The web site that offers this pension record/census information online is http://www.pensear.org/main.php . You can search the index for free, and if you find someone whose record you want to see, you can get it by email for a small fee of £1. I don't know if all the records have been transcribed, but the site says there are almost 20,000 records. I thought this might especially be of interest for Stewarts: there are 198 with that spelling, and one of the people that came up was Rachel Stewart nee BOYD (Londonderry) which may be something Lauren would want to check out. Also 11 Stuarts and 2 Stewards. Mary Mary Kyritsis Kifissia, Greece

Thank you one and all for your answers and I think the question is resolved. Our illustrious List administrator/mom/whatever probably came up with the most succinct answer, but all the links given have been great. Thank you. Ruth Cherecwich
Ruth, I have recently seen some information on this because on my father's maternal side we trace to the Fitz Randolphs who are assumed to be descendants of Rollo or Rollon. I had seen the spelling as Bruix. Now I am looking at a couple of sources that you have no doubtedly found by now. But if you go to: http://www.brucefamily.com/lineage.htm you will be able to see from Rollon and that the first Brus/Bruce came with William the Conqueror as it is written that Alan the Steward did as well. So there is a big ball of wax about the time that the Duke of Normandy aka William the Conqueror, that implicates the Bruce lineage as well as the Stewart and the FitzRandolphs. It is interesting research and by the time I was finished a couple of months ago, I was as confused as I was when I started. Nora Stewart Yahl

Hi Ruth: I googled on de Brus to find a better explanation for you than I am up to penning at the moment. :) My search criteria was on Robert's actual name.... de Brus. Here's one I found. ............................. http://www.takeourword.com/arc_logi.html From Burma Diode: Everywhere I have looked up the name Bruce, the only reference given is Robert the Bruce, which implies that bruce is either an adjective or a noun. In your history of Scotland, you first refer to Robert de Brus, then you call him The Bruce, and finally just Bruce. Is de Brus the original spelling which was corrupted to Bruce? If so, what is the meaning of de Brus (apparently Brus is a location)? .............................Answer............................. De Brus is Norman in origin and translates to `of Bruys,' Bruys being in France. Robert the Bruce's family came originally from Bruys. The name was corrupted by the Scots to Bruce and The Bruce. Interestingly, the Scots tended to call important men by their surname with the determiner the added. Therefore, one hears of "The Wallace," among others. One source also notes that Braose is a French place name which likely means `muddy' or `from the brush thicket.' .............................
