Does anyone on the list have any info regarding a James Stewart b. abt. 1724 b. in poss. New Jersey/New York area and lived in those two states 1750-1793 before going to Canada. He married Mary Jemima Taylor abt. 1750. Among their children were Joseph, James, John, Benjamin, Enoch, Charles, Taylor, and Susannah. James father was said to be possibly Charles Stewart father of Archibald Stewart of Sussex/Warren County. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks ........Dawn
I send this every so often in case there is a new Stewart that recognizes a name. Thanks. There was a family of Stewarts living in Martinsburg, Berkley Co., VA (now WV) in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Lazarus Stewart appears to be the father of several sons. Among their names are Adam, John, Robert, James and William. Does anyone know of the descendants of these? Could they be the ancestors of my Thomas? See note below. Looking for the parents and siblings of Thomas W(ilson?) Stewart. According to CW pension papers, Thomas W. Stewart was born ca 1827 in Berkley Co., VA. The information also gives his father as William. I first find Thomas in Henry Co., IA in the 1850 census when he was 23 yrs old. He married two years later, (1852) Eliza Shaner and they moved to Wapello, Louisa Co., IA. Thomas wa a cabinet maker and carpenter. They had 4 children; Oliver m. Elizabeth Sullivan, William m. Phoebe Green., Charles m. Anna Graham, and Adda d. 1864. In 1872 The family moved to Boulder, CO. I can find nothing of Thomas before 1850. I hope someone can help me find my (2) great grandfather's ancestors and descendants. Thanks in advance for any help. Aneta Cantrell
Hello Bev, I can't help you specifically, but wanted to tell you that the name Andrew among Stewarts is very common in the area around Cookstown and Stewartstown in Co. Tyrone. The Castle-Stewart family used that name for their first born sons for some generations, and there are several other families that seem to be related to them who also settled there. Also the name Mary Neal/Neil is familiar in that area. That should be the area you concentrate on first, I think. Mary Mary Kyritsis Kifissia, Greece > I wish I could match up with someone overseas! I'm descended from James Stewart of Iredell County, NC of the book My Stewarts and Other Kin of Iredell County, NC. I'd be interested in hearing from cousins! I am daughter of Charles Hudson, who is the son of Frances Dagenhart. I live in Austin, TX. Kristy Hudson Nelson
I really have no idea where my John Steuart landed, but I have a feeling it was probably in PA. He came to the US between 1842-1848, and was a coal miner in PA, married a Mary Johnson and they had their first three children in PA...in the Pittsburgh area... From there they moved to Pike County, IL around Winchester...where he was a coal miner for a while, and the other children were born. The Steuart became Stewart for some of the family members, and others remained Steuart. My great grandmother Kathleen, who was born in PA, used both. Until Fran Baggett located me here, I did not know her name was Steuart...but Stewart. Donna
Hi Donna, Most likely through Philadelphia. There were tons of Stewart`s living near the Pittsburgh area. By the time your John Stueart came the mines were already opened and that was a good job source. The spelling was always a flip flop thing. I think it depended on who took the census and how he heard the name, plus your ancestors accent. My line were Stewart`s until abt 1800-1810, then we decided on the Stuart spelling. Some though kept Stewart and still use that spelling. On the earliest tax lists in Colonial VA, the name was usually spelled STEWARD, which was the English spelling. My William Stewart was of NC, his sons John, Joshua, Daniel, Barnett, and William were all born in NC but came to Muhlenberg Co. KY. John and later Joshua moved to Caldwell Co. where they both died. Caldwell Co. borders Trigg Co. KY. I descend from both sons John and Joshua. I am looking for any information on a Catherine Elizabeth Stewart married to an A. McKeel, they had three sons Abednego McKeel, Shadrack McKeel, and Mashack McKeel, I am descended from Mashack. All I know is they supposedly came from Scotland...Family stories say they were mercenaries for King George. I have no other info on these individuals and was wondering if Catherine may have been someone important in the Stewart Clan. If anyone can help me I would be greatful. Hi listers, Many of us are faced with the question of where are Stewart`s first landed and lived. I can tell you one thing, if they did not live on the coast line, they did not land off a great ship in that area. Let`s look at the major port of call during the 1600`s to 1700`s. That would be Boston MA, PA, NJ, DE, MD, NY, VA, NC and SC. A lot of Stewart`s landed in PA, lived there a few years or as much as 20 to 30 years and went to areas where the land was cheaper. Or perhaps, they were dissenters and unhappy with the Religous rights in the area they lived in and decided to move on with a group of people. Most did not travel alone, they went with groups of people or in laws. Chances are, they may have levft family in the area that they originally settled in. There were 2 major things these people looked for an wanted: LAND and free religion. Mozst of the lands in all the castal areas was already taken or to costly, so they moved on to "frontier land". Frontier land was where they cheap land was and the GovT was selling it cheap. Why? Because they wnated to control the Indians, and improve and cultivate that land. The Coastal people did not usually want any part of that. So they got a lot of Scots and Scot Irish or were tough people to began with to do this work. Almost all the the men who fought in Dunsmore War and the French and Indian Wars were from Frontier land. Ditto for the ones who first settled places like TN and OH. These were people who were not usally gentry, did not need ribbons and lace for their hair and clothes. They wore buckskins, and moccasins. Anyone have a story to tell about their Stewart`s arrival in the USA? Teresa Stuart de Rios __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
