I got the list of children for "my James" from the 1850 census. I am trying to find the James and Mary Stewart whose daughter was Margaret and she married a Thomas Neall Penrose - the Penrose family is the family belonging to Mad Anthony Wayne's wife. Our Espy family is said to be related to Mad Anthony somehow and this is where I am going with this. Are you related to the Espys? I have a lot of Espy info but you may have it all if you used the Espy books. I am also trying to find more on a James Espy who was born in 1790 and was a seaman. Supposedly he was lost at sea in the mid 1800's but I haven't proven that yet either.
Sarah Elizabeth STEWART was born abt 1830 in GA and died in 1883 in Perry County, Alabama. She is buried in the HEARD family cemetery near Marion, Perry County, AL. Her husband was Samuel A. HEARD (1823-1863). Their HEARD children were: William Jefferies, Charles McClendon, Judge O., Mary HEARD VEITCH ? and Martha Elizabeth HEARD LeVERT. I am trying to connect her with her parents or siblings. In the 1860 Perry County AL census there appear to be two relatives living with her: Rebecca STEWART age 15 b GA and Nancy (assuming she is also a STEWART) age 13. By 1870 Sarah Elizabeth STEWART HEARD was a widow and listed as head of household with William, Charles, Judge, Mary and Martha. Her husband Samuel HEARD had died in 1863 at Missionary Ridge. Can anyone identify her parents or siblings for me. Thanks.
I continue to search for Jane Leach Stewart b. 1799 in TN or IL. She is the daughter of William Leach and the wife of John Stewart, son of James Potts Stewart and Margaret Witherspoon Stewart of Lawrence County, IL. She married John in Edwards County, IL, now Lawrence County. Jane was living in Carroll County, TN, in 1850, her husband having died about 1849. By 1860, she is living in Craighead County, AR, with all of her children except Martha. Two married sons, Abner Potts Stewart and Jackson M. Stewart, are living in the area with their wives. Rachel Jane Stewart and her cousin Francs L. Stewart as well as two brothers, Adley Guinn Stewart and John L. Stewart, are living with their mother and aunt Jane Leach Stewart. Another daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Stewart Barker is also living in the area with her husband John Wesley Barker. By 1870, the Barkers are in Newton County, AR, without other relatives. Adley Guinn, Jackson M., and John L. Stewart have been killed in the Civil War. Abner Potts Stewart survived the war but spent most of it imprisoned in Camp Douglas in Chicago after being captured at the Battle of Helena. He is living with his wife and child in Kelso, Missouri. His mother, Jane, his sister, Rachel Jane, and his cousin, Francis L. Stewart, disappeared off the face of the earth as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what happened to these three women? I would be eternally, and I mean Eternally, grateful for any information about them. I have been to Craighead County, AR, but all records before about 1880 were destroyed by fire. Linda Wilson
