    1. STEWART, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia
    2. Lynton Stewart
    3. My Stewart's came to Cumberland County, Nova Scotia from Blair Atholl in Perthshire. They arrived around 1800 or thereabouts. My first family member in the county was Robert Stewart, born in Blair Athol, died 4 April 1873 in Wallace. His wife was Ann McDonald, also born in Perthshire, and she died in Wallace on 26 Sep 1865. Their known children were: James, who married Catherine McLennan Robert Christina Peter Elizabeth (Betsy) John I have very good reason to believe that virtually all of the Stewart's living in Cumberland County before 1870 were related. I would love to hear from any other family members. I have a reasonably large database on the Stewart's of Cumberland Co., and am more than willing to share. If anyone has any pictures of people from that line of Stewart's, I would love to have a scanned copy! I can't help on Stewart's from the States. My line didn't come to the US until after 1930. Thanks, Lynton (Bill) Stewart A former Canadian citizen, who lost his Canadian citizenship due to an unjust clause in the 1947 Citizenship Act, that the government refuses to correct. Many Canadian's lost their citizenship because of clauses in that law. The majority of them do not even know that this happened. Canada left children and women stateless under this law, which violated UN Human Rights Treaties, which Canada had ratified.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/1244.1246.1 Message Board Post: Interestingly enough, I have an Isabella Turnbull Stewart in one my lines by marriage, b. 1852 in New Jersey, USA, who married John C. Mott in 1872. She died in 1941 in Flint, Michigan. The line goes back to a Charles Stewart of Co. Donegal, b. 1729, no links that I know of in Canada, but it's interesting that it's more or less same name. The name Turnbull comes into the family through one of her maternal lines, and goes back to James Turnbull of Selkirk, Scotland, b. 1795, son of Alexander, both of whom emigrated to New Jersey.

Surnames: Stewart, Turnbull Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AmJBAIB/1244.1246 Message Board Post: Can you add any other information about John or William? We have a family, who began as Turnbulls, but who mostly ;later changed their surname 'back'; to Stewart. Children: William 1825, David 1826, John 1828, Janet 1830, Ellen 1835, George 1838 & Isabella 1848. All but Isabella were born in Dundee. All but David were in Edinburgh in 1851. David was in Newcastle, married. I have located all but John & William's lines. Family rumour was that a John who may or may not be this one fled from England fearing the authorities, after throwing a man overboard in a temper. (this John was a ship's captain). Isabella added Stuart as a second name, keeping Turnbull as her surname and married & went to Canada. David kept Turnbull as a second name and had Stewart as his surname. (it's a long story why...!)
