Several years ago I submitted DNA to the FTDNA Stewart Surname Project (Kit #14577) in an effort to narrow the search. I matched only one other Stewart family, those that are known descendants of James Stewart and Mary Ann Lafferty who settled along the Cowpasture River in Augusta Co., VA. I matched this family 67/67 so there is no doubt of a close kinship. Over the years several of these descendants and other researchers of the "Cowpasture Stewarts" and I have tried to find the paper trail to back up the DNA trail with little success. I have had two other male Stuart cousins also test and verify my results by also matching the Cowpasture Stewarts. In 1850 our William Davis Stuart (spelled Stewart on census) was listed on the Winston County, MS census next door to an Aaron and Lucy Stewart of the age to be a brother and just a house or so away from a William & Polly Stewart. Last year we found a descendant of a John A. Stewart living in the house with William & Polly who agreed to test and also matched us and the Cowpasture Stewarts. Over the years his family had also adopted the Stuart spelling and lived not too far from my GG-Grandfather. This match seems to confirm that William & Polly Stewart were the parents of our William Davis Stuart as we have suspected for some time. We also had an "out of wedlock" cousin find us and come to the last family reunion. His father had died some years ago. He looked like the rest of us and fit right in. It was a thrill to find him. William Davis Stuart was born 1823 in AL and died 1907 in Neshoba Co., MS. He married Hannah Jones somewhere in AL and their first child (daughter) was born in AL just before they showed up on the 1850 Winston Census. Hannah Jones was the daughter of Madison Dudley Jones and Hannah Stainton and was mentioned in Dudley's will. Hannah Stainton Jones (and Dudley) was mentioned in her father's (John Stainton) will in Monroe Co., AL. I and several of my Stuart cousins (male and female) have tested autosomal DNA with Ancestry DNA and 23andMe. We are looking for any leads or other matches. --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! The John Stewart (of Forth Creek) born 1748 in Augusta, VA who married Margaret Potts (1770) and died about 1833 in Iredell, NC was of the Cowpasture Stewarts. I do not know about the John who died 1818 in Darlington. I cannot find mention of him in either the Tracks of the Pioneers book or the Tracks in Iredell Clay book. Dub, Ask about DNA tests. We have a solid fix on John of Darlington through four sons including our Absiolum's father Elias, but nothing close in any of the other Stewarts that have been tested. There are all kinds of family members in the household, and the actual parents for some of them are ? I suppose they could be from a different spouse, but since they are nowhere to be found after this census, there is no way to know for sure. There is an excellent book on the Captain Ralph Stewart family entitled Tracking The Pioneers, History and Genealogy of Capt. Ralph Stewart and his Descendants. There is quite a bit of info on Absolum. I am a descendant of Ralph's brother, John Stewart who left Augusta County, VA, as a child to go to Rowan/Iredell County, NC. The book is written by Stanley C. Browning. You might find it by googling. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: garylawrie1 Surnames: STEWART STUART DUNCAN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/9961/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for anyone with information on the above. He was last confirmed as living at Burnside of Meadaple near Fyvie, Aberdeenshire and working as a farm servant. I have reason to believe he may have been the father of my GG grandfather James Stuart/Stewart (1862 - 1930). I believe he died sometime between 1892 and 1930 and is listed as being a police officer although no confirmation if this was in the Aberdeen area or elsewhere. I understand his parents were a James Stewart and a Christian Duncan from Aberdeenshire. The name seems to have switched between Stewart and Stuart spellings at a whim. Any information would be welcome. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am looking for any information on John McDonald Stuart,(my great great grandfather) born in Scotland about 1825-1830. Usually one can find vital information about an ancestor, but not much about their personal life. In my case it is just the opposite with John McDonald Stuart. I know he traveled to both Australia and California looking for gold. He married Rebecca Phillips who was from England and had two children, James (born in England) and Marie,(my great grand mother) born in Scotland about 1860-1865. Both James and Marie had the middle initial F, which my grandmother told me referred to the name Frasier. John died penny less in St. Louis in 1898. One newspaper reported that he came from "a good family", "had once been a wealthy St. Louisan", and referred to him as Major Stuart. I have never been able to figure where he got the title of Major. His son James was a locomotive engineer and died in a train accident in Gunnison Colorado in 1883. John was divorced from Rebecca while living in St. Louis, and he also was possibly divorced from a first wife in California named Florence in 1856. He led a very interesting life. Any help with information on either Rebecca or John would be appreciated. Thank you. Gene Block
I am looking for the parents of Charles Henry Stewart who born on 15 June 1868, probably in Alabama. He lived in Washington County Arkansas, and died on 7 June 1954. Thank you.
