    3. Oh, btw, the main settlement in Tennessee is the Watauga Settlements. They weren't heavily settled until 1772 but that 1769 date may be close enough. As I told you the state wasn't formed until later. Many of these records are located in both Greene and Washington counties. Although there are many not online. There is a tax list online for these earliest settlers. That intersection between these 3 states is in southwest Polk County and the Copper Basin area. This area remained in the hands of the Cherokee until 1838. The line between GA and TN didn't change. It was highly affected by the Copper Mining that entered the area in 1850's. It saw a huge influx of people looking for work. Then 1850 and earlier Polk census records will say Benton or 'Hiwassee Mines" BUT it is the Basin area....one just has to know more about the family. to determine where they lived. McCaysville, GA is the same town but in GA. Randal; I am poorly equipped to answer your quest regarding the morphology of the touching borders of these three states. However, its a great question which has troubled myself and others. Here are my thoughts. I have been a frequent poster of NC Stewart questions as Rosannah Stewart, b c 1769, claimed to have been born in North Carolina but in an area which is now Tennessee. Other border realignments took place in the North-East corner of Georgia about the time gold was discovered there. Perhaps some others can point us to a proven answer to our questions. I am surprized with your comment that your Stewart ancestors went (from Canada?) to NC or GA about 1810 as that was the time slavery was causing others, including my gg grandfather Samuel Stewart to migrate to NW Ohio with many others , many Quakers. 3. There is an excellent, animated map of the progressive geographics of Tennessee at www.tngenweb.org TN was formed in 1796 FROM North Carolina. As far as I know there has been only one small adjustment made in that, generally, north / south line and that was in 1838 when Polk, TN was formed just after the Forced and final Great Removal of the Cherokee Indians. A small portion of CCNC was put into Polk TN. There were MANY county line adjustments in the region after that point...most of them small. That line between NC and TN ran the apex of he Appalachian Mtns in that general area. IE in this southern portion it runs the top of Hanging Dog mtn in the Tellico Ranger Dist. BTW these mountains was very instrumental in affecting early roads and migration patterns. There just wasn't that many ways of feasibly crossing them when it came to cumbersome wagons and whichever 'critters' they used to pull them. There were only two MAJOR routes. One was the Wilderness Road that came down thru Sullivan County. The other was the ancient Cherokee Indian path called the Unicoi Trail. The two recorded events we have of the earliest exploration Ii n the 1500's came up from the southern costal line. 3. Hi Dick I just wondered if you knew what happened to some of my Stewart cousins in the sense they went to I believe North Carolina in 1810 but went to Georgia shortly after. Did Georgia take over part of NC at some point? Did boundaries change? Being from north of 49 I am not up on early issues between States. From the same family of Joseph and Mary Stewart of Newberry, SC, I've been searching for the presumed marriage of their youngest daughter Esther Stewart, b c 1784 and mentioned in Joseph's will of 1808. Farthest back, ancestor George McDonald was born in Scotland in the 1700's and came to the US. He married a Stewart woman who was the daughter of Joseph Stewart, South Carolina.  We have a copy of the will in which George and his wife receive and inheritance from Joseph.  In some on-line trees, George is erroneously called George Washington McDonald. That was not him, it was his son.  Also, the un-named Stewart woman has been assigned the name of Sarah in some family trees based on naming conventions of the day, but there really is no record of her name. George and his wife had sons George Washington McDonald [my g-g-grandfather], Stewart McDonald, and daughters Sarah, Bettie, Fanny, Nancy and Mary.     2. My other Stewart, also documented as Stuart, was named Mary, but was nicknamed Polly.  She was born about 1792 in North Carolina. We have no record of her parents. She married Andrew Russell in South Carolina - we have a copy of her marriage license.  With Andrew Russell, she had twelve children.  Her sixth child, a son, is my g-g-grandfather Andrew M. I cannot find any documentation to support this and had eventually delete over 1500 people from my tree. Live and learn! On Ancestry I found a FAG that shows that James was buried in Lakeview Cem in Thorold, Ont., CAN. Other info: James Stewart came to NJ as a young boy before the Battle of Culloden in 1746. His wife was born and raised along the Susquehanna River area of NY. They settled on a small farm in Westfield, NJ about seven miles west of Elizabethtown in Essex Co. In 1772, due to the early hostilities with the Brittish the family moved to a small farm in Minisink, Orange Co., NY. In 1772 James and his son Joseph signed the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Rebels in Goshen in 1775. Joseph had three tours of duties in the Rebel army in southern NY. James remained at the farm in Minisink until Gov. James Graves Simcoe offered Crown Land Grants to the Simcoe Loyalists. In 1774 James brought his family to upper Can and resided at St. David's close to Niagra Falls. His son Joseph remained on the farm in Minisink. His family remained on this family farm until the 1960's when his grandson Edward Adelbert Stewart d. in 1961. This branch of the Stewart's remains in this town and the surrounding areas. The rest of the family remains in Ontario. Simcoe granted the family 1900 acres between 1797 and 1809. In 1793 James petitioned for land as a loyalist. He received 400 acres and 200 for each child and 200 acres for a William Stewart who may have been James grandson. This Wm. He d. in 1813 of disease. At the end of the war, James son Benjamin took up residence on his land grant. The 1828 census of Rainham shows his son Benjamin Jr. living on this land. George and Delphia lived in Virginia for several years (likely Spotsylvania Co).  They then moved to Kentucky.  By the stated birthplaces for their children, it appears this move occurred sometime between 1817 and 1819.  Family stories hold that George and Delphia first lived in Fayette County. I have yet to document them in that county.  George and Delphia eventually moved to Mercer County, Kentucky, locating a few miles north of Perryville.  They appear in Mercer County for the first time on the 1820 census and the 1820 tax rolls. George and Delphia remained in Mercer County for the rest of their lives.  George died in 1823 or 1824.  Delphia died in 1864. George and Delphia were the parents of eight known children: Elizabeth Stewart:  b. 1810; d. 1849; married William May Thomas Jefferson Stewart:  b. 1812; d. 1870; married Elizabeth Blackgrave George Stewart:  b. 1815-1820; d. 1844; married Talitha Potts Lucinda Stewart:  b. 1815; d. 1875; married Vincent L. Blacketer Mary Ann Stewart:  b. 1817; d. 1910; married William Powell James Allen Stewart:  b. 1819; d. 1896; married Emeline Hargrove and Nancy J. McGinnis Jane Stewart:  b. 1820; d. 1845; married Tyra Gibson Sarah Ellen Stewart:  b. 1822; d. 1916; married Richard H. Guthrie George and Delphia are my 4-gr grandparents. I descend from their son George. I would dearly love to find George’s parents or siblings, but right now am at a brick wall.    Would love to chat with anyone who is researching this family.  Thanks, Julie                             ********************************* PLEASE PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION to the address fields when you are sending or replying to list mail. ---------------------------------- Please visit Clan Stewart in America's web site:  http://www.clansstewart.org ------------------------------------ Looking for Scottish games in your area?  Visit http://www.scottishinfo.org _______________________________________________ STEWART mailing list STEWART@rootsweb.com ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to STEWART-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
