Author: Jean_R_Stewart Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/6640.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Linda, have you researched the Augusta Stuarts extensively? John Stuart 1749-1823 m. Agness Lewis, went to Virginia, fought Battle of Point Pleasant, settled Greenbriar in Braxton Co. (now WVa). All of this is recent research (for me) and his descendants are fairly well documented. We are trying to find direct ancestor of John Stewart b. 1789-1793 VA m. Jane Boggs and left her, then died in Missouri. Thanks! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Elizabeth Mure would have had no "title" as the mistress of the 7th High Steward of Scotland. She was not married to Robert when she bore him nine children. Robert attempted twice to legitimize the marriage, succeeding in 1347 via Papal dispensation. She died before Robert inherited the crown, so she would never have had any official style or title. The House of Stewart descended from the High Stewards of Scotland. "Stuart" is a French spelling. "Stiubhard" is one of the (modern) Gaelic spellings, and in addition to that there are numerous other spellings, all of which may have been used, sometimes by the same person. "Correct" spelling of any word including one's own surname was not a matter great importance to anyone until at least the 19th century. You mention no dates, but there was a William with wife Anne (--) who had 8 children beginning in 1802 and ending with a son John born 5 Feb 1821. And 6 Williams born between 1806 and 1826 to other families. To your other question, it is not likely that there is any connection to the House of Stuart. All legitimate lines have ended, and most of the Stewarts/Stuarts present in Ireland came over as farmers with one of the landowning Stewarts such as the Duke of Lennox in Donegal or the Baron of Castle Stewart in Tyrone. I also decend from this same line you have posted. Peter Stewart's father Peter Stewart married to Catherine McCartney are my gr-gr-gr grandparents. Peter jr also had a brother Andrew who immigrated to Alabama (I just found out last week). Snr Peter married Catherine in Kilwinning on May 16, 1846. He was born in England in 1825 and she in 1825. They had Peter who was 10 in 1861, William age 12, Marion age 8, Martha age 6, James age 4 and Andrew age 2 and apparently a John after. John Martin is showing age 1 in the Poor Relief records in Kilwinning in 1864. At that time Peter Sn is dead, stating killed in pits 2 weeks prior to June 10, 1864. I have just made contact with someone else who resides in Colorado who I guess decends from John Martin as above listed. Contact me as soon as you see this. Obvious connections here! 3. I would recommend FamilyTreeDNA.com for yDNA testing, and yes, start with at least 67 markers. You can test additional markers on upgrades, and FTDNA sometimes has specials on upgrades. There are active project administrators for the Stewart Family on FTDNA, and when you join the Stewart and Stuart Projects after testing, they will help sort out who you match and how. You can check out the Stewart Project even before testing by going to this page: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Stewart/default.aspx?section=yresults and set the filter to Y-DNA67. If you test with them be sure to fill out the information about your oldest known paternal ancestor, and provide information for contacting you. Good luck on your quest! And of course if you have further question, please ask!
