I too am a descendant of a King of Scotland.....Robert II. If we can find a common ancestor, I can assist you a great deal. And yes, you will find it left off, Stuart, Stewart, Steuart, and probably about 10 other variations. It is very common and some times even two ways in the span of two generations. That is the earliest ancestor I have been able to find. The Stewart name was acquired in the 1100's from the office of Lord High Steward of Scotland by Walter Stewart. They just changed the d to a t. Prior to that apparently they didn't have last names. Sounds kind of odd I know but that is the info I have been able to locate. If I can help you in any way, just ask. Author: RandyStewart15 Surnames: Stewart, Steward, first name McAlonie Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/54.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: No, I don't have any idea. I had some one from New Jersey email me one time about this and I gave him the same answer. McAlonie was born near Culleoka, Maury Co. Tenn in 1868 to William and Elizabeth Gibson Steward. The family in the 1870's belonged to the Church of Christ. Father was born in Mississippi in 1823, mother in Ky in 1829. I don't at this time have any indications of a recent immigration to America that is solid. The first names of the siblings in the bible record of McAlonie indicate a Scottish-Irish background but nothing has come up yet. About McAlonie's grandfathers one was born in Virginia, his John Gibson probably in Bedford Co Va, his William Steward, b. ca. 1785, has been noted by children to have been born in Va, North Carolina, and overseas, (Nancy Stewart Henson, 1870 Giles or Maury Co. Tn census. If you come up with a better idea, let me know. Randy Stewart Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mkyritsi Surnames: Stewart Stuart Steward Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/10044.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Actually, all Stewarts are probably not related. The name Stewart or Steward is an occupation name, and every castle and noble house had a steward. Many of them may well have taken their occupation as their last name when such things became necessary. However it's true that the spelling is not a firm clue to a certain line, the names Stewart and Stuart (and Steward) were used interchangeably and even now you may find it so. A Stewart cousin named her son Stuart because she felt that spelling looked better as a first name. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Appreciate your help and assistance with this given you have no link with the family. This does look like it is the correct person. This John Stuart had little or no contact with his illegitimate son so perhaps news was slow in getting through but he seems to now appear on three separate records as being a police officer. I will do some digging in Edinburgh around police records but looks like our man. Thanks once again and apologies for not replying sooner to your kind assistance. Author: theodoms05 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/10044.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am hoping someone would be able to find the answer to this... Robert Stewart was my 20th great grandfather, but it is his wife Elizabeth Mure (1320-13640) that I am hoping to get an answer.. **** Robert was my 18th great grandfather. :) Elizabeth died before Robert became King of Scotland... What would her title have been when she was married to Robert.. Her parents were Sir Adam & Lady Mure of Rowllan. **** I have Elizabeth's formal title as Countess of Strathearn, but another has her as Countess of Atholl. It seems both may be correct as Robert held both Earldoms which would have made her a Countess through Courtesy title. This is assuming he held the titles during their marriage which I have not verified the dates of yet. Should the spelling of the last name of all people descended from Robert Stewart be STUART OR STEWART.. I have been baffled.. Was not sure which spelling to use.. Especially if there were an illegitimate children of Kings etc. *** Either. There is no answer to this question I'm afraid. While it is correct that the name Stuart and Steuart comes from Queen Mary's spelling based on her French upbringing, you will find many Stewart families who were mere distant relatives of Mary's direct family changed the spelling of their names as well. So for technical purposes and historical accuracy, the name SHOULD be spelled Stewart if you are of the family not descended from Mary Stuart, but it isn't that simple and is not the case. My own family spells their Stuart and it interchanges throughout history on various records sometimes back and forth within the same family. Hope this has helped some.
