Stewart researchers in Antrim, NIR For about a year I have been extracting Stewart names from Rev. George Hill's book; " The Stewarts of Balintoy" and building an outline descendancy. As you undoubtedly know, a James Stewart and his brother Archibald Stewart, grandsons of John Stewart, I st Sheriff of Bute, settled on the NE Coast of Antrim about 1560, before the plantation era which formally started in 1608. I have discovered and added to this interesting collection, names like Christian (female) and Ninian, other Stewart persons whose lives impinged on that fair land before the troubles of 1640. I am inviting, for a second time, any of you who have ancestors known to have originated or tarried there after leaving Scotland, to join me in adding your names this on going study. While we can acknowledge other Stuart spellings, I am more interested in compiling families of a generation or two.. We are particularly interested in any DNA haplotype signatures you might share as well as dates and townland names. By offering your information in good faith, we jointly may be able to enlarge those families and add a generation or more to your ancestry. I too am descended from Nancy McConnell and Joseph Steuart. I had DNA testing done, Kit # 17094. I would be interested in any information you might have further back than Joseph's father, John. I suspect, if his name was changed, it might have to do with the first Jacobite Rebellion and he didn't want his identity known. That is strictly speculation on my behalf. In addition, I do not know if the Presbyterian issue was also in play because it is my understanding the Royal Stuarts were either Episcopal or Catholic and the Presbyterians were heavily persecuted by both the Episcopal and Catholic religions. I think part of the problem in finding ancestors is because they married cousins who married cousins who married more cousins and they all had similar if not the same names.
