I have seen info that says he "came from Milford, where he was not long," or something to that effect. There are some who believe this is the same Robert Stewart/Stuart who fought and was captured at the Battle of Worcester in 1651 (among many Scots prisoners) and who was then deported as an indentured laborer to the new world (New England) in 1652. I really don't know about that but have an interest in trying to either tie that together [somehow] or disprove it. I suppose one might lose his barony within a few years if one has found oneself an indentured laborer on a different continent. But who knows. Here is the link, and below an abstract: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Stewart,_5th_Earl_of_Bothwell Francis, Lord Stewart, Bothwell and Commendator of Kelso Abbey (b. 1584) - After his father's death, in spite of the attainder, he is occasionally styled 'Earl Bothwell', and Lord Stewart and Bothwell. Upon his marriage to Isobel, daughter of Robert Seton, 1st Earl of Winton, he obtained a rehabilitation under the Great Seal of Scotland, dated at Whitehall, 30 July 1614, but reserving the rights of those who had been granted his father's forfeited lands. (The rehabilitation was not formally ratified by Parliament until 1633). In 1630 he was 'absent from the country'. He finally obtained recovery, by decreet arbitral of Charles I, of part of the family estates, which he then sold to the Winton family. He lived in straitened circumstances, in 1637 petitioning King Charles 1st to be made Printer to the King in Ireland for 51 years. When he died his Testament-Dative was given in by his creditors at Edinburgh on 21 April 1640. His son Robert inherited his father's debts and after! a long struggle with them, lost the barony of Coldingham on 26 November 1656, to the Home of Renton family.[1] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They were dairy farmers in Kansas. I know they had a son named Reece, who died in WWII, and a son named Russ, who was an engineer on oil rigs. Last we saw of him, he was headed to the North Atlantic around 1970ish. There were daughters, too, Bub, Ethel, and someone else. I'm not sure of the rest of the family. Bob and Becky are both deceased for many years. I am seeking the family of these folks because they may have information on my father before he was their foster-brother. We have very little information on my dad's biological family. His biological father's surname was Pope and perhaps had been a British soldier or officer - we have no more than that. His mother was Mary Margaret Monahan or Monaghan. She died of TB shortly after they were divorced. The father got custody of my dad and left him at an orphanage. Thank you in advance for any assistance you may provide! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There are two different fathers cited for him depending on the tree you look at. The fathers are from two different places in Scotland. Which is correct? Any information and documentation, proof, of who his parents were and where they came from would be very much appreciated. After years of searching I can not find proof as to when he arrived in the colonies. Georgia did not exist in 1764 as a state as it was still a colony of England. Was he alone? What ship did he arrive on? Where did it sail from and when? Many Stewart GED files Start with "Andrew Stewart born in 1764 Warren, Ga". The problem with that is the 1764 date references the date mentioned by David Dobson's book "Scots in Georgia and the Deep South, 1735-1845 and not his date of birth. He may have entered the Georgia province/colony at that time. The quote from that book says "Stewart, Andrew, to leave Georgia in January 1764. (Ga.Gaz.#42)" The Georgia Gazette #42 (Ga.Gaz.#42) says: "As Mr. Andrew Stewart intends to leave this province, he desires any person to whom he is indebted to come immediately and receive payment, and any person indebted to him to settle the same."
