I keep watching certain names pop up, but all the spellings are Stewart; my family was Steuart..from Scotland, to PA (worked in coal mines), moved west after 1855...(my great grandmother Kate was born in about 1852-53 in PA). There were several children in the family. John Steuart came to the US in about 1844 from Scotland. I understand he had brothers who may have come with him. A number of the family members have changed the spelling to Stewart. Granny Kate spent a lot of time with cousins in Oklahoma and was also very familiar with Texas. Is there a possibility some of your brick walls might have come from a name-spelling change? I have already found one of those with my Feild (yep, Feild..from England) where several lines HAVE changed it to Field. Also, as some came in their names were 'Americanized' because certain spellings were more common. Steuart would have been one of those. Donna..who has lost her passwords...and is also on hubby's laptop, 4 states from home...

Dear Stewart Researchers: I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year as we begin 2011. The archives for this list, if not the list itself, began on 15 June 1996; Benson Wills was the Administrator/List Owner. I have had the pleasure of being the Administrator of this list after Jim Petermann decided it was time to move on 20 September 2002. (Has it *really* been over 8 years now???!!) Over the History of the list there have been many lively discussions (and the occasional flame war!). However, in the last year or more I have seen things slow down to the point of most all of the posts to the Stewart list being generated by the gateway from the Stewart message board. I find this rather sad. I am considering releasing the gateway messages on a more regulated basis. Such as "Tuesday is Gateway Day" or some such. Yes, that can create a flood of messages in a single day, but if the timing is known, you will be better prepared to take a peek and trot on over to the message board to reply to those of interest. I am just mulling this over at the moment.... If you have an opinion on the matter please send it *privately* to my admin address ([email protected]). This is not a call for "votes" as there is no "vote" when it comes to the administration of lists at Rootsweb. However, it is an opportunity for you to share your opinion as I mull things over. You may have some valid points for me to consider. As my Admin address forwards to a different personal address, don't be surprised if the return address from me is [email protected] --- add it to your "accept list" so mail from it is not lost to your spammy filters and you feel ignored for lack of response! My challenge to you in 2011 is to help your fellow Stewarts to break down their genealogical brick walls. In turn, they will help you as they can. None can expect to have others do ALL of your genealogy for you. Unfortunately it does take hard work and most do not get their genealogy handed to them on a silver platter! Be certain to go and VERIFY with the most primary source documents the items shared by others. And be generous -- share what you find! It is only fair. I am going to start a series of "roll calls" to try to nudge this log jam and help you get started again. When you reply to them -- be sure to change the subject line to include the content of your message. If the level of mail gets a bit overwhelming to you, don't unsubscribe! If you are receiving single messages you can have your subscription changed to digest mode -- one email that captures several and releases them when they reach a certain size limit. I encourage you to take a look back through the archives to see what was being discussed. You may find a cousin or two that you have missed! If you are one of the authors of the posts you find in the archives and you've had updates/corrections/additions to your genealogy posted earlier --- please send messages to the list to share what you've learned. Include the URL from your old message(s) as a cross reference and state what's changed. If Lina's family was in New Castle, Young Co., TX in 1920, father being Samuel Newman, you might want to look at the John Mattingly, wife Martha, also in that location 1920, who had a Jones E. Stewart and Charles N. Stewart living with them, listed as Brothers-in-law. According to Martha's TX death record, her parents were Martin Stewart and Rhoda Hubbard. John M. and the Stewarts were listed as working in coal mines, which I believe your James Stewart did as well. It appears the Mattinglys moved quite a bit before settling in TX, one child being born in VA and one in TN. James E. Stewart, husband of Lina appears to have been married before, as his age when first married was 18, but hers was 24 on the 1930 census. The Jones E. Stewart mentioned above was listed as married in 1920, but had no spouse with him. It might be worth checking with Young Co. TX to see if you can find a marriage record for your James and Lina. I did not find (only looked for a few minutes) Martin and Rhoda Stewart on the census records, but you might try looking for them. According to Martha's death record, she was born in London KY, which I believe is in Laurel Co. KY. Anyway, this is a long shot, but they were in the same area just prior to getting married, so it is a possibility. Author: razzmonger Surnames: STEWART Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stewart/9295/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My grandfather James E. Stewart was born in Oklahoma in April of 1923. I have not had much luck on tracing his family history. If my information is correct.... His father's name was James E. Stewart, also, and he was born in Kentucky abt 1892. His mother's name was Lina Virgina (Newman) Stewart, and she was born 23 Jul 1893, in Texas. I can remember visiting "Grandma Lina", when I was young, most likely during the 1970's. At that time she lived in Oklahoma City, OK. And her husband was already deceased, at that time. They had one other son, my grandfathers brother, Billie J. Stewart. I believe he was born and died in Oklahoma. I would like to find more information on the STEWART family. I have not been able to find Obits or any information to help me. I would like to know more about my Great Grandfather, JAMES E. STEWART, who was born in Kentucky, but I feel spent much time, and possibly died in OKLAHOMA. If anybody out there can help me in any way, I would appre! ciate it. Thanks.
