    1. [STEWART] Roll Call - Montie Stuart
    2. Lisa Polk
    3. My earliest Stuart is Montie Mell Stuart, born 1874-died 1928 Okmulgee, Oklahoma. My earliest documentation is his 1896 Masonic record where he transferred to the Checotah, Oklahoma lodge, when the Brush Hill lodge closed. I also have his 1898 Muskogee, Oklahoma marriage record to Rosetta Thomason (spelled Tomison on the record), and Okmulgee City Directories 1918 - 1930. The first census I find Montie, is married to (Hannah) Rosetta with children, on the 1910 Okmulgee, Oklahoma. My Stuart family is closely associated with the William Wiley Thomason family, (Rosetta is one of the daughters). The Thomason's are listed on the 1880 Boone County, Arkansas census. My Stuart and Thomason clans began moving to Houston, Texas beginning 1925, and remained there. We are also on the Stewart DNA project, with no matches as yet. There is an 1880 Bald Knob, White County, Arkansas census that lists Montie (born 1871) with father Robert, mother Elizbeth ... unable to prove. Montie has consistently claimed Jackson, Mississippi as his place of birth ... unable to prove. Montie's death cert lists father as "John" ... unable to prove. Family gossip is that his father was a World Traveler, leaving Montie in the care of an orphanage when his mother died ... unable to prove. Family gossip is that Montie's father arrived in Okmulgee to visit the family around 1926. He was said to be a doctor practicing in Arkansas, drove a good horse and buggy, and well dressed ... Unable to prove the father or the doctor theory. The eldest son Kern, is said to have very English mannerisms ... pinky out when drinking tea, always wore tucked in white shirt. Lisa Texas

    1. [STEWART] Fw: Thomas W. Stewart VA,IA,CO Roll Call
    2. There was a family of Stewarts living in Martinsburg, Berkley Co., VA (now WV) in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Lazarus Stewart appears to be the father of several sons. Among their names are Adam, John, Robert, James and William. Does anyone know of the descendants of these? Could they be the ancestors of my Thomas? See note below. Looking for the parents and siblings of Thomas W(ilson?) Stewart. According to CW pension papers, Thomas W. Stewart was born ca 1827 in Berkley Co., VA. The information also gives his father as William. I first find Thomas in Henry Co., IA in the 1850 census. He married two years later, (1852) Eliza Shaner and they moved to Wapello, Louisa Co., IA. Thomas was a cabinet maker and carpenter. They had 4 children; Oliver m. Elizabeth Sullivan, William m. Phoebe Green., Charles m. Anna Graham, and Adda d. 1864. In 1872 The family moved to Boulder, CO. I can find nothing of Thomas before 1850. I hope someone can help me find my (2) great grandfather's ancestors and descendants. Thanks in advance for any help. Aneta Cantrell

    3. I have two Stewart lines, one on my mother's side and one on my father's side. The Stewart listed here is from my father's side. The research was a combination of my own, Margy Grangers's and Teresa Stuart de Rios. John Stewart/Stuart, born 18 Jan 1757 in Amelia Co Virginia. Died about 1840 in Davidson North Carolina. Here is a link for the documentation: http://www.angelfire.com/nb/stewartdna/John1757VA.htm I have a 2004 note from Teresa concerning John Stewart's possible ancestors. There is a name change to Steward, and the line goes back to John Steward, born abt 1534 in Pateshull, Northants, , England and died 01 Aug 1577 Pateshull, Northants, , England. He married Jane Pigge, born abot Abt. 1517 in Floore, Northants, , England and died 26 Feb 1590/91 in Pateshull, Northants, England. I have LDS film number and reference number information. 1. [STEWART] William Stewart, Middleton, Cumberland County, Pennslyvania
    2. Nancy and John Downey
    3. Hello, Thank you for doing this, it is a great idea. Here is my earliest Stewart Family: William Stewart died Abt. 1762 in Middleton, Cumberland County, Pennslyvania wife unknown two children that I know: ( 1). John born 1728 died March 1780 in Middleton, Cumberland County, Pennslyvania Married Elizabeth, maiden name unknown 9 childern (2). Archibald Stewart born 1730 died Bet. 03 Sep - 07 Nov 1792 in Derry Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania married Isabella Jordan 8 children Sources: 1. In a letter to Edward Reynolds Steuart from William H. Egle, M.D., editor of the Pennsylvania Archives, dated Harrisburg, Penn., Feb. 27, 1889, " William Stewart was an early settler in Middletown township, Cumberland County, prior to the organization of the county, his name appearing on the first assessment list we have, 1751. He died prior to 1762, with a will, and he had among other children, John and Archibald. John Stewart seems to have had possession of the farm in 1762. He died in 1780 and left a wife Elizabeth and children, James, John, Archibald, William, Agnes, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Sarah. John mentioned in his will his brother Archibald, who then resided ( 1779) in Derry township, Cumberland county, this township being beyond the North mountain. Archibald Stewart was a private in Capt. William Willson's company, Second Batalion, Northumberland County, Militia, in active service in July, 1777. In 1785 Archibald had removed to Northumberland ( now Lycoming) county." 2. According to Egle's Notes and Queries; Historical and Genealogical; Interior Pennsylvania, Annual Volume 1898, Notes and Queries - XI, Page 71, "William Stewart paid taxes in 1762 in West Pennsborough and Middleton townships, Cumberland county." 3. 3. My "oldest" Stewart (d): William Stewart/d, born about 1801 in GA (sourse 1850 census). 1st wife: Eday/Edy/Edie Battles, daughter of Noel William Battles - married 24 Jan 1828 St. Clair Co. AL -- She died abt 1840. They lived in St. Clair Co., Alabama. Children: Samuel b:abt 1829 AL Olly b: abt 1831 AL Mary b: abt 1828 AL Elizabeth b:abt 1834 AL Heirs of Wm Steward and Edy Battles mentioned in will of Noel Battles, and specifically names Elizabeth. Source: posted by Jane Ervin 2000 on genforum. 2nd wife: Mary "Polly" EASON, married 14 Jan 1845 in St. Clair Co. AL 1850 census St. Clair Co. AL: STEWART, William 49 GA Polly 33 SC Samuel 21 AL Olery? 19 John 5 James 4 Martha 1 Mary Malley? 22 [Walley/Wally] Joseph Malley? 7 Benjamin Malley? 4 Joseph Eason? 12 George W Eason? 10 Eday? Stewart 2 Samuel 1/12 The 3 children - John, James and Martha- I would guess belong to Wm and Polly. The Walley kids belong to Mary (Steward) Walley The Eason kids I would guess to be Polly's from 1st marriage? That would mean she is probably NOT an EASON? Or she was never married? Children: Eday and Samuel Stewart:  Some think they belong to the oldest son, Samuel and his wife Bethany EASON, but I don't see her listed here, and they were not married until 15 Mar 1857 in St. Clair Co. AL, so perhaps he had another wife, who may have died in childbirth? I can't find William Stewart(d) and Polly, their younger children or the little Samuel and Eday  other than this census. All the others: Samuel and wife Bethany, and son, Mancel Olly (Steward) WATERS and 2 children without husband Mary (Steward) who married  a John EASON b: abt 1828 and likely Bethany's brother The Eason children All showed up in VanBuren Co., ARK before 1860, maybe even before 1855, based on birth year of one WATERS child. No idea what happened to Elizabeth, the one named in the will of N.Battles. No idea what became of William Steward, or where he came from, or who his parents were, but would sure like to know. I found this when searching for information on Mancel Steward, because his death record states he was born in Giles Co., TN. I have been unable to find his grandfather, William Steward after the 1850 census in St. Clair Co., AL. William remarried in 1845, so I am wondering if they all left Alabama (or were in TN first) and went to TN before Samuel and family showed up in ARK. Curious about this: U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 Name:     Wm C Steward Infant of Gender: Male Place of birth: Tennessee Estimated Birth Year: abt 1850 Age: 1 month Month of Death: Jul Census Year: 1850 Census Location: (City, County, State) District 14, Giles, Tennessee Page:     255 Line:     5 Roll:     T655_26 Reason I am curious: I believe there was some tie to Giles Co., TN because Mancel Steward's TX death cert. lists that as his place of birth, although he always lists AL on census records. Informant was daughter by second marriage so I am not sure if she was correct or not. Samuel Steward, son of William, I have the Civil War pension (confed)  filed by his wife, because he died of illness (or disappeared) after being captured and released. I have no other sources for William Steward, other that 1850 census and Alabama marriage record index. I DO NOT have the actual records for the marriages. On Ancestry, some unknowns have William Steward's parents listed as William Steward b: abt 1750 Britain and "some woman from PA" but this doesn't seem correct. Another person had parents listed as James Steward and Ollie. I think this person must have seen this, which is much more of a possibility, in my opinion: * Gone to Georgia, By William C. Stewart On March 15, 1815, William Sr. of Jasper County sold the land he had bought of Scott in 1811 while living in Morgan County, and shortly removed to Alabama. He may have been the William Stewart who with David Files (of a Pendleton, S.C., family) were appointed justices before Dec. 31, 1815 of the new county of Monroe, which at that time Included a large area. William appears as a cotton factor for Peter A. Remsen of Tuscaloosa Falls in 1820, and later applied for government land in Walker County (part of Monroe County in 1815), the tract being granted to him Oct. I, 1823. He died in 1828. *****His son William Jr. may have moved to St. Clair County, Ala. His son James is believed to have died in Georgia; in 1830, Ollie (Olive), widow of James was enumerated in Walker County. James is not found definitely In Jackson County after 1805, unless he were the James enumerated there in 1820. James and Ollie are believed to have had these children: Samuel, born in South Carolina 1800, died in Walker County before 1860: three daughter and two other sons, it is believed; and Manley, born In Georgia c1817, entered land in Wal.ker County. Ala., 1833, died there before 1860. William Sr.’s son John was born In Virginia, Aug. 17, 1783, married Sarah Woods in Jackson County, Ga., March 22, 1813, moved to St. Clair County, Ala., between 1816 and 1816 and shortly after joined his father in Walker County. He and Sarah had no sons, five daughters: Elizabeth born Apr. 5, 1814; in Georgia; Leanah, born Apr. 12, 1816 in Georgia or A1abama; Delaney, born May 4, 1818 In St. Clair County, Ala., was married after 1830 as the second wife of Neal McCarn (of a family from Richmond County, N. C., to Monroe County, Ala., by 1816); and Iraney, born March 16, 1828 in Walker County who was married to Daniel, brother of Neal McCarn. Nothing definite is known of William's daughter Mary. There has been speculation that she may have been the Polly, widow of William Vickery who lived adjoining the Stewarts in Jackson County. Widow Polly had moved to Jasper County before 1827, and on Aug. 26, 1824, a William Vickery entered land in Walker County, Ala., near the farm of William Stewart Sr. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nwga/peggy/peggy.html Does anyone have this book? or know anything about this family? 1. [STEWART] Robert II King of Scots b. 1315
    2. Nora Yahl
    3. Lauren, This is my story: A number of years ago when I didn't know a thing about genealogy, I posted on every board I could find and I received an e-mail from the daughter of James Dinwoodie who with Kenneth Robertson had researched my line of Stewarts in 1988. She was helping her father and was doing research on a Samuel Stewart, whom she believed to be the brother of Robert and John who came to America in 1718 from Ulster, Northern Ireland. The lore was that Samuel remained and did not travel with the others so that he might recover "lost lands". I have never had a clear picture of whether that was in Ireland or Scotland. She told me that if I would send her a gedcom of what I had uncovered from Robert b. 1655 down to myself, she in turn would send me a gedcom of Robert's line back to Robert the Bruce. This was accomplished. It gave bare facts; names and dates and only occasionally places. However much work has been done on these Stewarts by Chuck Speed and Ryk Brown and they have a much better understanding of the relationships than I do. I have been interested only in making a connection above Robert b. 1655 and all I knew was that his father was Walter. My original goal in doing genealogy was to either prove or disprove the many stories that my father had told us as children, and also find out more about his Dad, my grandfather. You know we all have a "Mary, Queen of Scots" story! A review of Chuck Speed and Ryk Brown'sworkhttp://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rykbrown/gartnafuaran.htm would be helpful to anyone interested in the history over the ocean. I believe there are lots of misconceptions about our early Stewart immigrants and to clear those would require a lot of reading and looking at early Andover, MA; Londonderry, NH; Amherst, NH records. I found the definitive work of Charles Knowles Bolton in Scotch Irish Pioneers in Ulster and America to be a good jumping off point. I cannot stress enough the importance of seeking and finding DOCUMENTS that prove whatever line you are working on. The actual 'dig' is the most important part of this activity. It gives a more accurate picture as well as saves a lot of headaches down the road for you and for those who are reviewing your work. I know a few facts: Jannette Forsythe Stewart lived to be almost 100 and is buried in the Chandler Hill cemetery in Colrain, MA. No stone! She went there with the widow of her son John Stewart after he died in Londonderry (now just Derry), NH. We know that John was married twice, first to Elizabeth Clark and Second to Elizabeth Forsythe. I have never found any blood relationship between Elizabeth and Jannette even with the same maiden surname. Frankly I have not worked the Forsythe line very much. A History of Colrain, MA by Lois McClelland Patrie was a good reference for the Stewarts in western MA. I feel relatively sure that Robert b. 1684 did not marry after coming to America and feel strongly the Robert that married Lydia Blair was Robert b. 1707 s/o the first Robert's brother John. I have no documents to prove this excepting the ages of Lydia and Robert. I have worked closely with the historian at Amherst, NH who informs me that the records there are in disarray and she has looked for lots of this Stewart history for me. She tells me that there are no markers in any of the cemeteries in Amherst for Robert or his son John. She has never been able to find a record of Simpson Stewart's marriage to Hannah. Nor has anything turned up that would fit for a surname of Hannah in church records, town records or whatever. Simpson is the s/o John, s/o Robert b. 1684 The migratory pattern for these Stewarts were: Robert came into Boston and went to Andover, MA and later in life he went to Amherst, NH. His son John, who married Keturah Holt was there and died there. Simpson was born in Andover but moved to Amherst and then on to Jaffrey, NH and finally to Berlin, Vermont. His grandson Charles May also had the wanderlust, moving about New England and then finally west to Iowa. The family scatters from there to many points west and south. I find migratory patterns one of the most helpful tools in research. If you find a stray relative in a strange place, then it would all the more important to have documents to prove the lineage. 1. [STEWART] John Steuart...born about 1825 in Scotland
    2. John Steuart was my great great grandfather, born in Scotland, was in the US in Pennsylvania by 1850..in the Census. He married Mary Johnson whose parents came from Scotland in Pennsylvania. They had several children and my great grandmother Kathleen (Granny Kate) was my buddy when I was growing up. She was born in about 1853 in Pennsylvania. By 1860 they were in IL and he was still working as a coal miner. I can't remember the children's names and I am 1100 miles from home. Granny Kate married an S.Lawrence and had one daughter who died by 1874 and apparently her husband did too. I have found the record of their marriage in IL. She remarried Urban Bernard Kennedy, son of William Kennedy (Scottish not Irish) and Sarah Wright. They had three children: Dr. Walter Urban Kennedy (1877-1970) who married my grandmother Sada Amelia Vertrees. They had one son, my father Donald Vertrees Kennedy. I am an only child. Helen Kennedy (called Nellie) born about 1880. She married Jessie French Jr. They had 4 children. John Preston Kennedy--who died in about 1949 in CA. Granny Kate was 4 foot 9 inches tall, a redhead, who knew Clara Barton, went into Cuba during the Spanish American War. Granny Kate would tell me stories, and I have since found that many were quite true. I have learned about cousins who had heard about Granny Kate... Granny Kate literally traveled much of the world, and then described life as it has changed from the time she was born until she died in 1947..AFTER a trip from IL to Indianapolis, to New Castle, IN and back home..she fell in the back yard and got pneumonia and died..just before Christmas. I had been with her at Thanksgiving. Some people have changed the spelling to Stewart..but all census records do show STEUART.

    3. Lauren, I have only been able to get back to Andrew Thomas Stewart bn abt 1700 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He was sent there supposedly by King of England. At this point I am LOST, I think he was the product of Robert. Roughan Castle, a striking plantation castle, can be found south-west of Roughan Lough on the Dungannon to Stewartstown road near the village of Newmills, County Tyrone. Roughan Castle was built in c. 1618 by Andrew Stewart, eldest son of Andrew Stewart the third Lord Ochiltree, Lord Castlestewart who came from Scotland during the plantation and established the nearby town of Stewartstown. Thus, Stewart junior acquired the land of Ballokevan from Robert Stewart between 1610 and 1619 and here he built his castle overlooking the lough Castle - The site of the castle consists of a sub-rectangular platform, 35m N-S x 60m Bev > Dear Stewart Researchers: > > Here's today's challenge: (there will be others!) > > Which century is the oldest Stewart in your line from?
