My oldest Stewart, Albert Stewart, is said to have lived in Londonderry and to have had 4 sons who came to American abt 1775 prior to the Revolution. Son William c. 1727 settled in Virginia. Son Robert settled in Maryland. Son James settled at Duanesburgh, NY Son George b 1739 (my ancestor) settled at Schenectady, NY. From The Stewart Clan Magazine, June 1940 Vol XV11, No 12 p 107: George born in 1739, prob Ireland. Is said to have come to America a short time before 1775 with his brothers William, Robert and James. He m. abt 1778, Elizabeth Ferguson and settled at Schenectady [at that time in Albany County, NY.] George, James, David, Daniel and John Stuart were soldiers in the second regiment of the Albany County troops in the Revolutionary War. Sources for the following are: Census, Federal and State, birth, death records, Civil War records, various County Histories, etc. George Stewart, according to the Federal Census of 1790, residing in Schenectady 1-1-4 children, one of whom was baptized in St. George's Episcopal Church in Schenectady. My earliest Stewart, my GGGG-grandfather, was William Stewart. He married Catherine Poisal of Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia (now West Va) about 1790 or so. They had 3 children, William N., Sarah and Adam Stewart. Sarah and Adam stayed in Martinsburg, as did their mother, but William N., my GGG-grandfather, was apprenticed in 1801 at the age of about 8 in Mason county, KY. He got out of the apprenticeship in 1809 there, and the document notes that his father William was deceased. He chose John Shotwell as his guardian, and later married his daughter. Their son John Shotwell Stewart moved from Mason county KY to Lafayette county, Missouri, where my Stewarts stayed. Catherine Poisal was the daughter of Adam and Catherine Poisal. She died in 1828 at age 81 in Martinsburg. One source reported that this Stewart family “came from Scotland to the U.S. and settled in Maryland”.
