Hello All, I have a Friend here in our Small Town from Germany who helps me with my Steffen/ Steffan/Stephan German Research. What she told me is that the Germans pronounce their 'FF's with a 'V' sound - thus the Stephen -Steven or Stephens-Stevens spelling You see in a lot of US Civil records. IN my German Research I have found the Spelling Stephan/Steffan/Steffen in the same Family Line. I thought initially that my G/grandfather Adam Stephan was illiterate and couldn't read or write, but a cousin in Germany ( we are both descended from Johan Philip Stephan 0f 1681) told me that the Local German Rulers made sure the children could do so. IN US REcords I have found Steffon, Stephan, Stephens, Stevens all in the Same Family line - so don't Ignore the various spellings as I did for years. Turns out a Christ Stephens in 1900 Pennsylvania Census Records was my Grandfather - Joseph Stevens brother !! I am interested in Comparing notes with Other Steffen (ect) researchers as I have Located nearly Two Dozen Cousin's & Siblings of my G/grandfather Adam Stephan/Steffan b.1813 in Lamperthiem,Hesse - what is now Country of Germany. I have located these individuals in Ohio, Missouri, Penns, & California. My brother & I Have traced our Steffan/Steffen line back to a Nicholaus Stephan of 1590 in Heppenhiem,Bergstrasse, Hesse - Germany and collateral Families. I have a Large Chart of His 6 son's & most of their Decendents. Look forward to your reply - genofifty@hotmail.com 0r genofifty@gmail.com Thx, Geno (Steffen)Stevens ----Original Message Follows---- From: "J walker" <jwnorfolk@gmail.com> Reply-To: steffen@rootsweb.com To: STEFFEN@rootsweb.com Subject: [STEFFEN] Nationality Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2006 23:02:50 -0500 To All; Of what nationality did the Steffen Family descend from?
