    1. Re: [STEVENS] Thomas Darnal Stephens late 1700's to 1811 Loudoun Co, Va
    2. John Stevens
    3. Thomas Darnal Stephens is one of our family. He had a son John B. Stevens, as well as Thomas and Leven. Thomas's wife was a Webster, raised by her grandfather, her mother was a Campbell (long story). Thomas's sister Johannah Darnall Stevens married a Webster too. I can give you the John B. Stevens line. Our end of the family knows him as John Benjamin, but he was named in the Thomas D. bible as John Brewis Stevens. When John B. inherited property from his wife's father (Sarah Ogden), the Will refers to him as John Bruce Stevens. John is buried with his wife at Bruce Chapel, Mason County, West Virginia. John was born in 1776 and died 1859. John and Sallie had a number of children, Ann was his daughter, she was born about 1803 and died in 1839. Ann married a Henderson and lived near what is now Henderson, WV also in Mason County. I believe he also had a son Hannibal, and then my great-grandfather John B. Stevens 1825-1880. John B (again we know him as Benjamin, but he is listed as Junior too) lived in Mason County WV and married Rachel Letitia Clendennin about 1850. They had several children who did not live long. Rachel died in 1862. John remarried in 1863 to Mary (will have to dig into notes on her maiden name). They had several children, including Hannibal (known to us as Han), Atlanta (dad's Aunt At), Meg (not sure of her name), Benjamin, and my grandfather, John William Stevens. John William was born in 1873 and died about 1946. John was married to Nannie Louise Mead. Nannie died in childbirth in 1912. Nannie's family was the Meade family from Pennsylvania. John Mead Stevens (1906-2004) was married to Eva Francis Henry (1912-2001). Dad had sisters, Helen May Stevens McDowell, 1902-1982, Carrie Stevens Mohr (1904-1988), Eva Alden Stevens Gibson (1912-2006) and one living sister. His brother was Sterlie Willam Stevens (1908-1962?). I have better information and can add a bit more. We recently learned a bit about John B. Stevens (Sr). He came to Mason County, WV around 1820, and had a grist mill for several years. His was the first horse drawn mill in the area. Several years later a Mr. Beale installed a steam mill which put John out of business. The site of the mill is near what is now known as the Archer farm, and at the foot of the Bruce Chapel, where he is buried. John was refered to in an 1880 oral history as Captain John. He originally obtained several hundred acres, which may have been a grant. Cannot find citation that says he was a military officer. John would have been old enough for the war of 1812. Also, have tried to find whether Thomas Stephens fought in the battle of Point Pleasant. Point Pleasant (Mason County) was the site of a battle between Lord Dunsmore (Murray) and Chief Cornstalk. Since Thomas had a brother William and those names show up on the list of soldiers, I think it is a possibility he fought there. It might explain why John B sought to settle there as the Ohio River soils were so much richer than the Virginia soils. Other mysterys include Thomas' father William. A William Stevens worked for George Washington and established a site near Henderson WV (Ironically where Ann Henderson lived). The site was destroyed by Indians at the outbreak of the Revolution. Still George laid claim to 20,000 river bottom acres in that area. Lots of luck in your search. I will dig into files for more info too.
