Hi Richard, just today I read a rather short explination of why so many people's names were lost during the Civil War. Too many people died too suddenly. I'd like to see a national database where people can list people known to join the war, but never mentioned again. They were buried in mass graves and sometimes the people who dug the graves were killed and nobody living knew where or who was buried after a battle. They seldom kept track of who survived. And even worse if somebody died in a POW camp or your own hospital. I know ages do jump around a bit in the census, but once in a while it turns out to be a different James & Sarah. My ggf Wilford Stevens was married twice, but some of my cousins swear he must have been married 4 or 5 times because several other Wilford's in the same areas. And yes, JD is your James D. I promised to try my best to find more about him. Today, I received letter from CT and different people want my ancestors buried in their cemetery, because there is some evidence they might be. (this is what happens when too many people keep records) :-) Usually, I prefer the simpler western life where records were seldom important and often burned and sometimes lost. Hi David: Thank you for your reply and your input. I am sure that my James D. and Sarah are the ones in the 1850 Morgan Co., MO census because: 1. The birth record for my Father-in-law, John "Henry" Stevens, says that his father, John J. Stevens, was born in Miller Co., MO in 1849. 2. The 1850 census did not show the family to be in Miller Co., MO. I started looking in the adjoining counties and found them in Morgan Co. 3. The second son of James D. and Sarah, Joseph W. Stevens, had his birth registered in the Missouri records in 1869 stating that he was born in Morgan Co, MO. in 1855 which matches with his age in the 1860 census for Miller Co., MO. Joseph was 15 at the time (1869) and living with John Coggburn family in Taney Co., MO. (The state of Missouri must have lost a lot of records during the war and were trying to piece them back together). John J. was 21 and living with his wife, Ruth Ann Coggburn and their son Samuel in the home of Ruth Ann's widowed Mother in Taney Co. You have collected so much Stevens/ Stephens information you must have fun keeping it all straight. If you come across anything that points to the parents of James D. Stephens/Stevens I would appreciate hearing from you. Do you have any information on the Stevens' that were in Campbell Co., KY in the early 1800's? There was a JOHN, JAMES &WILLIAM that I think could be my line but haven't been able to find anything on them online. Keep up the good work Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Stevens" <david@stevens-turner.com> To: <stevens@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 05, 2007 8:06 PM Subject: Re: [STEVENS] STEVENS books & lots of them 1 > Hi Richard, just today I read a rather short explination of why so > many people's names were lost during the Civil War. Dear David, Still need your expert help on my G-grandfather. Edward A. Stevens. Only records I have on him is that he Married my G-grandmother in May, 1883, Putnam Co., MO. His name was listed on the marriage cert., as Edward A. Stephens. The clerk possibly mis-spelled his last name, because he didn't read or write until my g-grandmother taught him after they were married. Her name was Tobitha See. They both listed their home county as Schuyler Co., MO. I know that Tobitha's home was there, but can't find a thing on him. They lived many years in Adair Co., MO. Tobitha died there and both are buried in the Bear Creek Cemetary, Kirksvill. Edward didn't die in Adair Co. Family rumor says he died in Kansas City, MO., but I checked all records and the only one was a Edward A. Stephens iin 1931. Too early for him, because I have a picture of him and his Miller grandchildren in 1933. Taken in Kansas City.He is my main link to the past. He was born abt. 1860-1865. Where? Rumor KY.-MO.-ILL.. Who knows. My extended family have never been of help back there in MO. I have over 30 1st cousins just in the greater Kansas city area. Not one is interested. Thanks, Bruce Stevens --- David Stevens <david@stevens-turner.com> wrote: > Hi Richard, just today I read a rather short > explination of why so > many people's names were lost during the Civil War. > Too many people > died too suddenly.
