Hi Val, That's the $64 question. I do have a marriage certificate which shows Stephen James Stevens father to be of the same name and a soldier - but spelt Stephen James Stevings. But that is all. Stephen James Stevens on the 1861 and 1871 Census indicates he was born in the area of Maidstone Kent c1835 ie before registration. Does this help ?
