As you know, this was a very difficult search, made more difficult by apparently someone using another name once they reached adulthood. Here's what I found. As I've already told you, your Curtis, b 1909/10 was the son fo Robert Stephens and wife Dorie per the 1920 census. I have since found birth records for three of their children, including Curtis and one sister, Catherine M....and another daughter, I'll get to in a minute. Catherine M. Stevens was shown to have parents Robert Stevens and Dove (Dorie?) Swafford...May 30, 1909 Your Curtis was shown to have parents William Stevens and Dovie Bauman Nov 14, 1910 This might seem like there were two separate mothers, but I don't believe that is the case. I went to Familysearch.org and did a search for Dove Bauman, but got nothing that seemed like a match for her born 1885. But, I did get a positive match for a Dove Swafford, botn 1885, daughter of James Swafford and Margaret Bowman (Bauman?). ah HA!!! There was obviously just one mother. Now, to reconcile the father's name issue...of Robert...or William. The third birth record was for a daughter elizabeth, b April 14, 1914. This is apparently MILDRED Elizabeth or ELIZABETH Mildred who was 6 years old in the 1920 household of Robert and Dorie/Dovie. HER parents were listed as William C and Dovie/Dowie Swafford. Now it makes sense that apparently Robert was probably fully named, Robert William C or William C. Robert. I suspect the former...and that possibly he was named after a relative who died sometinme between 1900 and 1910 when he assumed the name Robert (also after his marriage in about 1908 BTW). There is a marriage record for a ROBERT STEVENS in Monroe Co, IN ...says he was born Oct 7....father was James and mother, Nancy. This confirms what I suspected. In 1900, the James W. Stephens b 1852 IN and wife Nancy A b 1860 IN had the following children: Oscar b Jan 1883 age 17 (he was the guy living next to Robert in 1920) William C b Oct 1884 age 15 Grace B b April 1886 age 14 Ethel B b July 1891 8 The above William C is the same William who married Dovie/Dorie Swafford (mother maiden name was Bauman) and who was shown to be the father of Elizabeth (Mildred) and Curtis A....and as Robert, the father of Catherine M. So, now we got back another generation and I believe one more I can do for you yet. I believe James is the son of Edward and Elizabeth Stevens of Monroe Co. 1860 Census Edward 38 KY Edlizabeth 33 KY Thomas E 11 KY William S 10 KY James M 7 IN Zachariah 5 IN Benjamin 2 KY Thomas Ashbrook 21 Indiana Note that the famiily apparently made a trip back to KY between 1855 and 1860, during which time little Benjamin was born. Wherever this family was in 1850, that's where your family apparently came from in KY, since the two older boys were born there...they should show up in 1850 in KY. 1930 census: Dorie J. Stephens 44 Widow m 22 years b IN IN IN Curtis A 20 Mildred J. 17 from this we see that Robert, Aka William C, died between 1920 or 1930 James M. Stephens apparently married a Nancy Martin/Morton. There are birth records for three of their children that I could find.....names not given in my on line data, but you can check the birth records there in Monroe Co for the full details. Two gave mother as Nancy Martin and one as Morton I believe. Son, Jan 23, 1883 (was Oscar b Jan 1883 per 1900 census) Daughter April 17,, 1886 (was Grace b April 1886) daughter July 17, 1891 (was Ethel b July 1891) ***Important note here is that I could not find William C. aka Robert in the birth records. He may just be mix indexed, but I tired just using parents' names and any Stevens or Stephens in Monroe Co and nothing came up. He was supposedly born in IN, but maybe they were briefly in another county...or Nancy was for his birth..or maybe they tripped back across into KY for some reason for a year and he was actually born there. In any case...it was disappointing not to find his birth record, but perhaps it is really there in Monroe county after all....and was missed by the WPA workers who indexed the records....or maybe the page wasn't readable for some reason. We know though, that he was born Oct 7, 1884 when we combine two separate records...his marriage...and the 1900 census. The Nancy age 49 in the household of Oscar age 27 in the 1910 census of Monroe Co, a couple doors from Robert,we now know is Robert's/ William C.'s, mother. That's all I have...quite a leap forward.
