    3. When I was growing up my parents stressed that our name was spelled "Stevens" and that we were not related to the other "Stephens" families in our area. When I started researching our family, I learned that my grandfather, Matison A. Stevens, born in Knox County, Kentucky was the first of our family to use the "Stevens" spelling. His father, Henry Clay Stephens, born in Virginia, used the "Stephens and so did the rest of the family!
