    3. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system. Thanks. Peter STEVENS List Admin. Author: drumaneen Surnames: Stevens Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4198/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Can anyone please help with a LOOKUP for this individual in the Surrey Parish of Witley. Unfortunately he died in Godalming in 1839... If he had lived just a little longer his place of birth would have been officially recorded by the first Census in 1841. We know he was buried in the Churchyard of St Peter and St Paul, on the 26th July 1839 age abt 49 years. Here the Vicar of Godalming wrote "of Brook, Witley" into the burial record adjacent to his name. We really need confirmation of whether he is listed in the Witley Parish register of births around 1790 and the names of his parents... we are at a complete block and will welcome any assistance. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Rekput Surnames: Stevens/Stephens/Boylin Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4197.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi...found some things for you on this research question. 1880 Kalamazoo , Texas township, Michigan Adelia Boylan 58 (b 1822) New Y. NY CT Henry Stevens 23 son MI NY NY Ah ha....Henry is her son....still...could have also been adopted...so looking backward at 1870 1870 Kalamazoo, TX, MI Aaron Boylin (indexed as Baylin) Adelia 49 NY Ada Stephens 16 MI Laura 8 MI So, it appears athat Adelia had some Stevens sibblings...Laura and Henry. Note that Ada/Adelia's birth year calculates to more like 1853-54 rather than 1863 as you indicated. She was definitely shown as the older child in 1870....so she would have to have been shown as younger than Laura if she was born in 1863. So, then I looked for a marriage for Aaron Boylan and there was one in Kalamazoo Co on dec 18, 1868 to an Adelia Stenus. Note...I do NOT believe her name was Stenus....I think that is probably a very bad transcription/indexing problem...maybe hard to read on the original record. The name Stenus has the right shape to be Stevens and I'll bet if you send for a copy of the original record you will see that it's Stevens. In that case...Adelia was previously married to a Stevens...was widowed (probably) and thus she is the real mother of the kids... ...widowed maybe having sonmething to do with the Civil War..timing is right....and she remarried to Aaron Boylin. Alice Adelia may have married under the name Boylin or Stevens...hard to tell. You didn't mention who she married and I could not find a marriage for her...lots of Stevens out there without something to narrow it down. I don't think it's a big mystery...something that happened a lot. I doubt very much that Aaron formally adopted her...just wasn't done back then. However, he did apparently raise her for a few years and she may have married under the Boylin name out of respect. The girls in this situation often took the step dad's name...but the boys (even if they went by the step dad's name as a child) reverted to their true name upon reaching manhood and independence from the household. Hope all this helps. I couldn't find Adelia in 1860 and couldn't find Henry in either 1860 or 1870...but there were some things I could have tried...just don't have the time right now. 1. [STEVENS] Jonas Stevens of Killingworth, CT
    2. SHARLA STEVENS
    3. Hello all, I have researched my husband's Stevens line and am at a brick wall. Let me outline his family tree for you. Charles Dillon Stevens b. abt 1852 St. Louis, MO, m. Lena Tarrant Charles Whittlesey Stevens b. abt 1817 Pompey, NY, m. Susan Dillon Hezekiah Stevens b. 1793 in CT (pretty sure in Killingworth but no proof yet), m. Lois Field (not sure where Lois was born, but she came from Jericho, VT prior to residing in Pompey, NY). Jonas Stevens b. 1740/1741 Killingworth, CT, m. Hester Whittlesey b. 1749 Saybrook, CT Elnathan Stevens b. 1703 Killingworth, CT Josiah Stevens b. abt 1670 William Stevens b. abt 1630 England My brick wall is that I've not been able to find documentation for a few very important details. I have traced Charles Whittlesey Stevens to Pompey, NY where he was born. He was a prominent doctor in St. Louis and a Professor of Anatomy at the medical college there. The college has a archives department and from there I found out that he had been born in Pompey. In doing more research I found out that his father was Hezekiah Stevens and that his mother was Lois Field. I also found that he had two brothers that were named Richard F. Stevens and William H. Stevens. Their father, Hezekiah and his brother Henry, moved from Connecticut to Pompey, NY to open a cabinetry shop. This information is from a writing that was done by either Charles or one of his brothers in the early to mid 1870's and preserved in a published book. Henry Stevens later moved to Fabius, NY where he is buried there with their mother Hester Whittlesey Stevens and his wife Phena Jerome. Henry having moved to Fabius and marrying Phena Jerome is also mentioned in the book, so I am quite certain that Hezekiah and Henry are brothers - and that Jonas and Hester are their parents. P.S. Hester had a father and a brother named Hezekiah. I have found some documentation that Jonas had a son named Henry in 1795, but have found NO documentation that Jonas had a son named Hezekiah. Also, I have found NO documentation that Jonas and Hester were married. But I am very certain that the two did marry and that Hezekiah and Henry are late children for them (Jonas and Hester had to have married at some point in the 1770's). I have found ONE record where Hester Whittlesey had married a Stevens, first name unknown... but that was a couple of years ago and I did not keep track of where I found that record. I suppose what I'm asking for is if anyone out there knows or can find a mention of Hester Whittlesey marrying Jonas Stevens and also a document showing the birth of Hezekiah Stevens. I look forward to hearing back from any Stevens researchers who have any knowledge of this line or are just interested in knowing more. Best Regards, Sharla Stevens

    3. Folks, this is a YET ANOTHER reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List.
