He and his parents were born in Kentucky. His wife Silvina Erwin might have been born in Ohio. They were married in Charleston, Coles Co. IL.11 April 1844. (William Stevens was born 22 May, 1803, married Silvina as above, and died 27 April 1885? Last two numbers are blurred. THey had four children. My gr.grandmother Mary Susan Stevens, 29 March, 1850 - who married Benjamin Franklin Fleenor in Charleston, Coles Co., March 1881. Her brothers were: B.F. Stevens, b.17 January 1845, m. 6 March 1869, d.30 April 1881 (I have the eulogy written for him my his brother-in-law, B.F. Fleenor) James W. Stevens, b.06 April 1856 Married 07 March 07 1876. No death date given. Samuel (J or T) Stevens, b.01 September 1858 ]The reason I am writing regarding this posting, is that it is the only one coming anywhere near him in time, 1803 I have William and Silvina's marriage license, issued by Charleston, Coles Co. All of the children seem to hae been born there. I do not have info on the male siblings wives. My gr.grandmother, Mary Susan Stevens was also maried in Chrlestong, Coles Co, so I assume from the information on their certificate, that most of the rest of the family stayed in and around Illinois. My Fleenor line is from my gr.grandfather, and my maiden name was Niceley. A good deal more info is available, some friends found what they could for me in the 1880 census. Good luck to all o fus - these folks have been elusive.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: STEVENS, DELAND, FRYE, RUSSELL, HAYWARD, UPHAM Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0lJBAIB/3748 Message Board Post: I have a genealogy done in 1959 by Eleanor STEVENS on the ancestors of Charles Henry STEVENS. In this genealogy, she shows the wife of John STEVENS b. 1764 Andover, MA d. ca 1838 s/o Jonathan STEVENS and Jemima RUSSELL to be married to Elizabeth DELAND d/o John DELAND and Judith UPHAM. Since the the author of the genealogy is no long living, and I do not have access to her actual research, only the end result which is names, placed and dates, I have been comparing her handwritten information to gedcoms and sources that I can find on the internet to prepare the information to go into a genealogy database. The problem arises that ALL the information I find on the internet shows this particular John STEVENS was married to Elizabeth FRYE not Elizabeth DELAND. Of course, that definitely changes the face of this family dynamic, particularly since she has so many of Elizabeth DELAND's ancestors included. I find on the internet John STEVENS b. 25 Aug 1764 Andover, MA s/o Jonathan STEVENS and Jemima RUSSELL as the husband of Elizabeth FRYE, but no information about Elizabeth FRYE herself other than a dob of ca 1765. The John STEVENS everyone has married to Elizabeth DELAND shows up as John STEVENS b. ca 1767 Braintree, Norfolk, MA s/o Peletiah STEVENS and Hannah HAYWARD. *NOTE - The source of this information is: Genealogies of the Families Of Braintree, Norfolk, Mass., 1640-1850 by Waldo Chamberlain Sprague. There are three ways to think about this: 1. Her research is WRONG. 2. Her research is RIGHT and everyone else is WRONG. 3. Elizabeth FRYE and Elizabeth DELAND are the same person, perhaps via another marriage. Since I am not a STEVENS researcher, can anyone give me any more sources to prove who this particular John STEVENS s/o Jonathan STEVENS and Jemina RUSSELL married? Any insight would be much appreciated. Regards, JC Henry

We are using DNA along with traditional research to connect the Powell's who migrated to Gordon Co., GA from the Pendleton Dist, and Pickens Co., in SC before moving on to TX, AL, AR, and KS. If you recognize one of the following Stevens lines would like to hear from you and compare and share information. Thank You~Diane The following from the Pendleton Dist SC Deeds 1790-1806 help in idenfying who Mary Ellen Powell's father was: #381,382 James Powell(called Sr. in Oath) and Ales Powell, his wife, for love and affection they bear to beloved children, Sam Stevens and Polly{Mary} Stevens, his wife, grant all household goods and property now in our possession, also all claims and demands we have against any person. Date: 19 Sept 1805 signed James(x)Powell and Ales(x)Powell. witness: David Murphree, Allen Powell. Alllen Powell made oath to David Murphree, J.P. 26 Oct 1805 This undoubtedly refering to the older James Powell age 45up in the 1800 Pendleton census. Sounds like sort of a will or perhaps planning to move? This James is not in the 1810 Pendleton census. The James in the 1810 census is the James Powell who married Rebecca Bynum, living next to Samuel Stephens. James wife is Ales(Alice?). One can speculate that she was Alice Brewer, a daughter of one of the Brewers who lived earlier in Chatham/Orange counties NC and one finds a few land transactions there between Brewer and a James Powell. This James Powell probably one of those listed in the 1790 Chatham census. Who was the Allen Powell who witnessed? Also in deed book: James Powell, Sr., for confidience in my trusty friend, William Powell, appoint him my attorney to recover all debts and demands due me in Chatham or Wake Co NC Date: 21 Jul 1802. signed James Powell. wit: Samuel(x)Stephens, William Murphree, James(x)Powell. Here we have James sr being witnessed by his son-in-law Samuel Stephens, by William Murphreeand a James Powell; perhaps this is James Powell who married Rebecca Bynum. The William Powell either his brother or son. James has ties back to Chatham NC. Samuel Stephens and Mary Ellen Powell Stephens named their sons James, Allen, William, Greenberry and Dison. My ancestor James Dison Powell b.1824 SC. migrated along with Allen, James, William and Josias Powell from the Pendleton, Pickens Co., of SC before 1850.
