    1. John Stevens/Stephens 1811 Loudoun Va
    2. Scott, Brenda
    3. Good morning. My earliest Stephens/Stevens researched is John Alexander Stephens born 12/11/1811 reportedly in Loudoun County, Va, possibly Leesburg. The only marriage found for him was in 1839 when he was 28 years old to Roxanna aka Roseanna Burgess who was born in Fairfax, Va in 1822. John was first listed as a farmers helper, painter then construction. As far as most census show, they remained in Loudoun. They lived at times on the Murphy Shumate farm, and on the Fulton Farms. They had several children, Martha, Fanny (Frances?), John W. (William?), Robert T (Thomas?), Thomas Lee Mason, an at one time a Columbus was listed, Mary Catherine who married into the Quaker Greggs. Other names associated were Lowe, Ford, Claggett, Bouic, Ault/Alt, Frame, Mathers(?). I have found that Mathers may be the mothers maiden name of Roxanna Burgess. Mathers seem to be attached to the Brooks family. Looking for any holes in the brick wall. Thanks. Brenda Stevens-Scott

I'm not sure if Henry Stephens married Rose-Anne O Ferry in Natchez or not. But there is a Natchez connection. You know how cousins often wrote home about how good the opportunities were in the west. John Stephens was literate and I believe his father William was too. Family tradition says the family originated in England. I keep running into Clarks and Stephens in the Opalousas, Louisiana area. But the Mississippi river was the highway of it's day. Any possible avenues of research you might come of with would be helpful. Terry

So, hopefully, I will be able to find out soon which John Stevens in NC is my John Stevens. When Littleton moved to MS from KY, according to our family's oral history, he brought his mother and all his siblings. But, he moved to MS in 1850. And your William's son John had been born in LA by that time. I will look around to see if I can find a William who fits your dates. --Doug

My William Stephens b. abt 1780 and died near Henry, Louisiana. His son was named John Vachell Stephens, b. 14 Oct 1820 in Louisiana. William married Rachel Clark. William's neighbor was James Clark. I can't find documentation to connect William & Rachel to this neighbor. It seem that the Stephens of every state named somebody William or John in their family. William's friends and associates were all men who came from states like Kentuck, Virginia and the Carolinas. I just can't get anybody connected and I'd try the DNA testing if I had a male line that had continued from William. But alas, William had only one grandson who died at age 12.

State your names, approximate birthdates and the States you believe they are from. I'm looking for William Stephens, B abt 1780 who lived in Vermilion Parish Louisiana. He was Married to Rachel Clark. b abt 1792. This couple lived in Louisiana most of their lives that I know about. I have hints that William may have a connection of Henry Stephens and Rose-Anne O Ferry. I recently got this information: CLARK, Henry (John - a native of Maryland & Mary STEVEN - of Monongahela) b. between 20-21 July 1809, Recorded: 11 Aug. 1813 Pats: Therence CLARCK - of Ireland & Susan COEM - of Maryland; Mats: Henry STEVEN & Rose Anne OFERRY - of Maryland; Spons: Denis STEVENS & Catherine CLARCK. Fr. Michel Bernard BARRIERE (Opel. Ch.: v.1-B, p.585) Could Denis Stephens be the son of Henry and the brother of Mary Stephens??? The above record was in the Opelousas, Louisiana Church records. There are hundreds of William Stephens, if you do not give a state where you are searching then I'm wasting my time looking at you posting. Do any of these names look familier to anyone? Terry

This board is replicated out to the Rootsweb mailing list... so we are getting email with STEVENS inquires saying "STEVENS FAMILY." This really doesn't help us figure out whether to spend the time looking at your posting or not... The answers could use some more detail too. LOCATION and DATES would be very helpful for the rest us (remember, this is a 'party-line' conversation) in both the Subject line and the responses.
