Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system. Thanks. Peter STEVENS List Admin. W.F. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stevens, Butler, Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0lJBAIB/3867 Message Board Post: Joan E. Stevens, 71, of Gardner, passed away peacefully at the home on Friday, August 18, 2006, after a year-long battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2006, at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, 913-856-7111. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at Bruce Funeral Home, Burial will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006, at Fort Scott National Cemetery, Fort Scott, Kan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church or to Kansas City Hospice. Joan was born in Fort Scott, Kan., to Edgar and Marian Butler on February 27, 1935. She spent her early school years at Deerfield, Missouri, before attending high school at Nevada, Missouri. After graduating from high school in 1953, Joan attended Pittsburg State University and graduated with a B.S. in Education in 1958. While attending college in Pittsburg, Joan met and married Doyle Stevens on March 29, 1956, during Easter Break. After finishing school that year, the couple then moved to Topeka for one year, where their first child was born. They moved to Gardner in 1957, and have resided there ever since. Joan dedicated much of her life to teaching and taught second grade for 34 years in the Olathe school district (30 years at Washington Elementary and four years at Ridgeview Elementary). It always pleased her when former students would come up and say, “Do you remember me?” and she was able to find out what they had done since leaving her class. Her experience was invaluable when her daughter became a teacher and she was often called upon for advice and a sympathetic ear. While free time was pretty scarce, Joan was active at the Olathe Christian Church for many years, teaching Vacation Bible School and as a member of the Evangelism Committee. She attended Antioch Baptist Church, Spring Hill, Kan., for the last 30 years, where she was active in Sunday school. She was also faithful in visiting many elderly people in the community. Joan is survived by her husband of 50 years, Doyle; children, Darrell Stevens of Spring Hill and Cherry Stevens of Vassar, Kan.; three grandchildren who were a great source of pride and joy; and a brother, Edgar W. Butler of Atchison, Kan. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be greatly missed by those left behind, but we know she is free from her earthly diseased body and is enjoying her new heavenly body with the Lord. Hello, folks, within the next few days, RootsWeb will be changing its mail list software from "Smartlist" to "Mailman". (The software used by the Boards will also be changing but THIS notice deals with the change in List software only.) You can access a software migration schedule that will tell you when to expect this list to be migrated at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html If you have any questions pertaining to the migration schedule, you can contact me at the admin address for this list: mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]-admin@rootsweb.com . How will this change in maillist software affect you as a user? The plan is "Not Much", but there are a number of changes of which you should be aware: 1. Most importantly, the distinction between "list" mode and "digest" mode will change such that users can only access one of these two modes using a single e-mail address. If you wish to subscribe to both modes, you must do so using two different addresses. 2. As a result, the "list" mode will no longer require the "-L" for subscriptions, unsubscriptions, and to send mail to the list. You will still be able to send messages to the list using the mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]-L@rootsweb.com address you use now OR you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to mailto:[INSERTLISTNAME]@rootsweb.com . Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. (The "-D" will still be required for all "digest" mode actions.) 3. The deletion of the "-L" for "list" mode mail means that some of you will have to do some tweaking to your mail filters, but this should not be too onerous a task. 4. Unlike Smartlist, Mailman is more restrictive in respect of subscribes and unsubscribes. To subscribe or unsubscribe, the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE MUST now be in the Subject line of the e-mail ... just putting it in the text will be insufficient. On the plus side, there will be a "NO MAIL" mode now! 5. There will also be changes to the way in which (a) bounces, and (b) e-mail address on the "Reject" list are handled ... for example, List Admins. now won't be notified of any bounce until the bounce threshold for the list has been met, at which time the address(es) will be automatically unsubbed. This will take me some getting used to because I won't see from post to post who's bouncing, or why ... Why change at all? The "why" is that Smartlist, the software that is currently used for Rootsweb's lists is not only no longer supported but is held together with generations of bailing wire and bubble gum. The choice to migrate to new software was really no longer a choice, but a necessity if we are to continue to enjoy the ease of doing genealogy via our email in boxes. Take a deep breath. Count to ten. Do not panic. The tutorial (YES, there will be a tutorial available!) is very user-friendly. The software is easy to use. It will take a wee bit of getting accustomed to and life with it will be a bit different. There is also a new list for anyone to ask questions, seek advice, etc., on the new maillist software, and has been designed for list subscribers to discuss the updates and get/give peer assistance in adjusting e-mail filters, etc.: LIST-UPDATE@rootsweb.com (NOTE: No "-L"!! ... subscribe at mailto:LIST-UPDATE-request@rootsweb.com OR at mailto:LIST-UPDATE-D-request@rootsweb.com ). No doubt there will be other things that arise from time to time as well. As we enter this brave new world, pls contact me at the above admin address with any questions ... as usual, I'll try to assist as quickly as possible! Thanks, and continued good hunting! Peter Wyant List Admin.

It contained some conflicting information. For Adelbert Eugene Ellis, I have a death certificate saying he was buried in the Village Cemetery in Canaan, on March 28, 1909 but, there is a tombstone in the Coaticook, QC cemetery which bears his name and the correct dates of his birth (18 May 1852) and death. The Canaan, Vermont death certificate lists Sarah Fletcher as his mother. His spouse is listed as Mary A. (Hartwell) Ellis. There is conflicting information about his father, EC (Ephraim) Ellis as well. In Mount Forest Cemetery in Coaticook, QC, EC (Ephraim) Ellis is buried next to two spouses Electa Buckland, and Sarah S. Stevens. I have Stanstead QC marriage records indicating that EC (Ephraim) Ellis married Sarah S. Stevens on 25 February 1844 and Electa Buckland on 24 March 1863. It seems the more I find, the deeper the family mystery gets. Any help members of this list can offer would be appreciated. Sincerely yours, David B. Ellis Graham David B.
