Family tradition says that Homer Stevens' (my wife's father) mother was Cherokee which fits your post. We were just wondering if you have found out anymore information. We are happy to share what we have which is not very much. Jesse Denton Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My Jacob was born in 1830 in Germany. He was married to Jane Unknown born 1834 in Scottland. My William (Robinson) Stevens/Stephens was born in 1874/75 in Indiana. He was raised by Jacob and Jane. I don't know if they adopted him legally or not, but I know know that he took their last name for the rest of his life and so did all his children. The census I have for this proff is started as follows: Township of Franklin, County of Johnson, State of Indiana, 1880. Later in life you will find that William married Eva and Jane later lived with them in Morgan Co. If any of this sounds familar, please let me know. Thanks! Marcia

    3. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system. Thanks. Peter STEVENS List Admin. p.s. please also remember that you need send your post to ONLY ONE of mailto:[listname]-L@rootsweb.com and mailto:[listname]@rootsweb.com ... either one works ... if you send your posts to both addresses, they'll appear twice on the list AND be archived twice. Thanks Paul C. Palmer wrote: >My wife's family has a STEVENS / STEPHENS line in which the name JACOB >recurs frequently. The family was in colonial NC and is in Tennessee by >early 19th century. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: STEVENS Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4044/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to find a site which is collecting DNA studies of the descendants of Thomas Stevens [1679-1774] who died in Canaan Parish, Litchfield County CT. Although I have seen the Stevens name spelled as Stephens in census returns, etc I have not seen it spelled as any other way than Stevens and that is the way it is spelled in my line. The Stevens line through my grandfather is PROBABLY traced back to Thomas Stevens and that is why I am specifically looking for this line's test page. I recently provided a DNA sample [mtDNA] to the Sorenson Foundation [I urge everyone to do this--it is free and it will ultimately help sort out surnames. There is no immediate benefit to the person who donates except a discount on yDNA analyses -- if you have yDNA you want sequenced the discount is excellent. The url for them is: www.smgf.org This is not an advert for them but just thought I would throw that in. TIA judy
