Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system. I am trying to find family of a Nancy Porter Powell, b. 1830. I think I found her living in Beaver Falls, PA, in the household of a B. Stevens, in 1880. She is described as his sister, but I'm thinking it's sis-in-law, as James Porter is in the home, too, listed as bro-in-law. I'm wondering if this B. Stevens was married to a Porter sister ( he is marked as married, but no wife in the listing). Nancy carried a gene for blindness, any of her sisters may have, too. He apparently designed a horse-drawn ambulance attributed to Tripler, which was the dominant large ambulance used during the first year or so in the Civil War. Most likely he worked with Charles Stuart Tripler Surgeon, USA, who was in Cincinnati from 1856-1861 and returned in 1863 and died in 1866. The Cinti Gazette records that Stevens built a Tripler-like ambulance and that he also built at least three ambulances under contract to the Federal Government. Shop was at 55 E 5th St here in Cincinnati. After an apparent considerable success, he dropped out - not found in 1864, and his location was taken over by Moore and Albrecht. Was listed as a 59 year old farmer in 1880. Thanks John Steiner jcsneuro@fuse.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Stevens on the list of Death Notices: Members of Fraternal Orders. He died 15 December 1880, and was a member of the AOUW Lodge no. 61 in Mound Valley, Kansas. This person could well be my husband's great-grandfather, R.J. Stevens, born about 1845 in Maine, who resided in and was a census-taker in Mound Valley in the 1880 census. We know R.J. died prior to the 1900 census, as his wife Sarah was listed as Widow in the 1900 census.
