Author: scott6672ny Surnames: Stevens Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4129/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I need some opinions on what I have discoverd. 1900 San Juan County Washington census: http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7602&path=Washington.San Juan.Lopez.192.8&fn=Ella Lorinda&ln=Stevens&st=r&pid=62221416&rc=&zp=100 Are these the same two as in the 1870 Winnebego County Iowa census: http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=7163&path=Iowa.Winnebago.Forest.2 These two people match as both were born the same years and same states in both census. My problem is in 1900 census they are listed as head of house and wife and in 1870 they are listed as two female siblings. Any thoughts on how to reconcile this will be greatly appreaciated. 2. Robert Hill
    3. My GG grandfather, Dr. Isom STEVENS, was born in Rowan Co., North Carolina in 1804 and died in Wayne Co., Indiana in 1871. His father was Spencer, and his grandfather was Sampson STEVENS. Isom's son, Joseph Marion STEVENS, born 1845 in Centerville, Wayne Co., Indiana, died 1920 in Hugoton, Stevens Co., Kansas. Joseph's wife was Nancy Elizabeth McCASHLAND. They had nine children, all but the last were born in Wayne Co., IN. Their oldest daughter, Lovetta Leora STEVENS, was my paternal grandmother, who married 1891 in Barton Co., Kansas to Everett Tandy HILL. What I'm needing (wanting) is further information on Isom, Spencer and Sampson. I believe, but have found no proof, that this STEVENS family were Quakers, and they left North Carolina for Indiana about 1820. A couple of reasons I believe this is that both Richmond, Wayne Co., IN and Haviland, Kiowa Co., KS (where Nancy Elizabeth [McCASHLAND] STEVENS died) have strong Quaker ties. I hope I'm not throwing out too many names all at once, but I wanted to be sure that readers were certain of the family I'm working on. Thanks for reading this, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Bob Hill Arizona

Near Edgefield so could originaly be from there. I am particularly interested in the two Silus Stevens in Barnwell who I believe to be my Grandfathers. It is suspected that Elisha Stevens b. 1729, moved his family south from Stamford, CT. Josiah Stevens raised his family in SC, and most of them spent their entire lives there. I am currently up against a substantial brick wall, trying to find information on Elihu Stevens b. 1810, who was the father of John Marion Stevens b. 1845 (and others). This seems to be a period of time, when no documentation survived. Elihu's father was Abraham Stevens, b. 1775 in Edgefield, and moved to Putnam Co., GA. Abraham's father was Elisha Stevens b. 1750, I don't know know where. I know his father, Josiah, was born in Bertie Co., NC. If anyone has any informatio on this Stevens group, I would be very glad to hear from you. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: aswift Surnames: STEVENS STEPHENS EDMONSON McLAREN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4126/mb.ashx Message Board Post: >From what I can tell, there were two (or more) different STEVENS families in South Carolina in the early to late 1700s. One family of those families were the descendants of John Stevens and Abigail Lord. John Stevens came from Newbury, Essex Co. Massachusetts, to Dorchester, Berkeley County, SC and received a land grant in 1696 for the benefit of settlers of the church. This church's congregation, including some of the children of John & Abigail Lord Stevens, later removed to establish the church at Midway, Liberty County, Georgia. This John Stevens died about 1720 and left a will which was recorded in 1720. His children were John, Joseph, Elizabeth and Samuel. Another STEVENS line I have researched descends from Robert Stevens who married Jennet Edmonson. He died in 1733 in Colleton County, South Carolina and also leaves a will recorded and names his children Robert Jr, John, Thomas, Jacob, William, Margaret and David. His wife, Jennet, died in between 1747 and 1752 when her will was recorded in Colleton County. She named sons: Thomas, David, Robert, and daughter Margaret McClaren (McLaren); and grandchildren: John, William, Benjamin, Jacob, Robert & Ruth Stevens; and cousins John and Mary Edmonson. I found on the internet someone claiming that Robert Stevens was a son of John Stevens, of Buckinghamshire, England and Ann Wade. The information reported is that John Stevens died in Essex Co. Virginia in 1724. No source is given for this information so I wonder if anyone knows where this information came from. It is reported that John and Ann Wade Stevens had 13 children: Robert, Charles, Stephen, William, Jane, Barnaby, Margaret, Mary, Thomas, Elinor, Jacob, Richard & James. In trying to connect my Stephens to the first mentioned Dorchester group, I conducted a lot of research if anyone is interested. Unfortunately, I don't find that there is any connection between them and the latter mentioned Robert Stevens from which I descend, although I suppose there could be. I've done a good bit of research on this line as well and would be glad to share information with other researchers in hopes of connecting other bits of information. If there are any other South Carolina STEVENS/STEPHENS researchers out there, please let me know. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [STEVENS] Thomas STEVENS & Amelia GRANT
    2. David Stevens
    3. On the internet, somebody named Mark Stevens attached our Thomas Stevens (1813 ,H, IN - 1890 ,Madison, IA) to Benjamin & Nancy ARNOLD STEVENS, but Jon Fair, a person who is descended from Benjamin & Nancy says "no way". To me it seems likely to be Benjamin, if Benjamin is related to Wilford STEPHENS (1831). But, on the other hand, Thomas (son of James STEVENS 1745 - 1822) & Dorcas DORR STEVENS lived next to George GRANT & that's the father of Amelia GRANT, who my Thomas married in 1832. The book, "The Stevens / Stephens of Harrison County Indiana" is no help because Thomas & Amelia left ,Harrison County in 1836 and no children are recorded for them (between 1832 - 1836), and he probably never owned land in Harrison. The book "Descendents of William GRANT" is no help because they record that probably Amelia married Thomas Stevens & died shortly thereafter in Harrison County. Well, I have found their graves in King Cemetery, St Charles, Madison, IA (which was their farm when they were buried there.) So, I decided to help other people in Harrison County and perhaps some day, somebody will find a bible record or church record or journal that names the parents of my "Thomas STEVENS 1813 ,Harrison, IN". Thomas & Emily's (Amelia) oldest daughter, Argula / Arvilla (or 5 other spellings) was born 1836 ,Harrison, IN (and then they moved away). Their oldest son was Wilford STEVENS and he lived 1839 ,McDonough, IL - 1912 Joplin, Jasper, MO. The name Wilford STEVENS is quite rare & 3 of them are connected to Harrison County, IN. One was born, married & died in Boone Twp, Harrison, IN. Another was born there & moved directly to Joplin, MO and died somewhere not yet identified and the third is my great grandfather, the son of Thomas STEVENS. I am very confused, I need a nap now. :-) Always, David STEVENS

    3. Hi Jane, I don't know David Merrill, but I've enjoyed getting to know Obediah's family these past few days. I found many land records in Indiana for an Obediah, but I don't know enough about him to connect to these land records. I was surprised at what I found about Stevens / Stephens in Indiana and so I made a copy of every one of those records. Did Obediah's parents move to Indiana also ? 3. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system.
