    3. Hi David: Thank you for your reply and your input. I am sure that my James D. and Sarah are the ones in the 1850 Morgan Co., MO census because: 1. The birth record for my Father-in-law, John "Henry" Stevens, says that his father, John J. Stevens, was born in Miller Co., MO in 1849. 2. The 1850 census did not show the family to be in Miller Co., MO. I started looking in the adjoining counties and found them in Morgan Co. 3. The second son of James D. and Sarah, Joseph W. Stevens, had his birth registered in the Missouri records in 1869 stating that he was born in Morgan Co, MO. in 1855 which matches with his age in the 1860 census for Miller Co., MO. Joseph was 15 at the time (1869) and living with John Coggburn family in Taney Co., MO. (The state of Missouri must have lost a lot of records during the war and were trying to piece them back together). John J. was 21 and living with his wife, Ruth Ann Coggburn and their son Samuel in the home of Ruth Ann's widowed Mother in Taney Co. You have collected so much Stevens/ Stephens information you must have fun keeping it all straight. If you come across anything that points to the parents of James D. Stephens/Stevens I would appreciate hearing from you. Do you have any information on the Stevens' that were in Campbell Co., KY in the early 1800's? There was a JOHN, JAMES &WILLIAM that I think could be my line but haven't been able to find anything on them online. Keep up the good work Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Stevens" <david@stevens-turner.com> To: <stevens@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 05, 2007 8:06 PM Subject: Re: [STEVENS] STEVENS books & lots of them 1 > Hi Richard, just today I read a rather short explination of why so > many people's names were lost during the Civil War. 3. Hi Richard, just today I read a rather short explination of why so many people's names were lost during the Civil War. Too many people died too suddenly. I'd like to see a national database where people can list people known to join the war, but never mentioned again. They were buried in mass graves and sometimes the people who dug the graves were killed and nobody living knew where or who was buried after a battle. They seldom kept track of who survived. And even worse if somebody died in a POW camp or your own hospital. I know ages do jump around a bit in the census, but once in a while it turns out to be a different James & Sarah. My ggf Wilford Stevens was married twice, but some of my cousins swear he must have been married 4 or 5 times because several other Wilford's in the same areas. And yes, JD is your James D. I promised to try my best to find more about him. Today, I received letter from CT and different people want my ancestors buried in their cemetery, because there is some evidence they might be. (this is what happens when too many people keep records) :-) Usually, I prefer the simpler western life where records were seldom important and often burned and sometimes lost. 3. David: Who is the J.D. Stevens you mention? My James D. Stevens (Stephens in the census') was born in KY either in 1830 or 1827. In the 1850 census he is in Morgan Co., MO with wife Sarah and one year old son John. In this census it looks like James is 20 years old and Sarah 23. In the 1860 census they are in Miller Co., MO and it shows James to be 33 and Sarah 33. 3. Dear Bruce: I am pretty sure we compared our Stephens/Stevens before without finding a link but I don't have any of the siblings of our James D. Stephens/Stevens so the link could be there somewhere. Your Edward was born 1860-75 and our James was born 1827-30. Your Edward could be the son of one of James siblings. I believe I refered you to Ben Stevens whose GGrandfather and Grandfather were both Edward, the younger being born in Woodford Co., KY. Ben also had a James born the same year as our James and both married to a Sarah and both lost in the Civil War. He is sure his James never left Kentucky but I still think there is a connection. I think you said Ben's e-mail address was no longer good. Too bad because he is probably the one who has your line. There are no Edward's in our line that I know of. Sure wish I could help you with this. The lines are so close you feel like they must be connected somewhere. Keep in touch. I will print and save your information in case I come across anything. 3. Dear David, Would you happen to have any info on my G-grandfather. Edward Azel Stevens. born abt 1860-1865 possibly KY or MO. or anywhere. Can't seem to find a thing on him. He married my G-grandmother Tobitha See, May 1883 in Putnam Co., MO. His name was spelled Stephens, but he could not read or write. So I believe that the clerk mis-spelled it. Listed his home as Schuyler Co., MO., but I don't think so. 3. Dear Pat, If you by chance run across a Edward A. Stevens/Stephens in your search, please let me know. My G-grandfather Edward A. Stevens born abt. 1860-1865. married my G-grandmother Tobitha See in Putnam Co., MO. may 1883. listed his name as Stephens, but he could not write so I think the clerk mis-spelled it. Family says he was from KY., but listed his home in Schuyler Co., MO.. Other family says his home was in Morgan Co., MO. So I just don't know. Lived most of his life in Adair Co., MO. and family says he died in Kansas City, MO. Could only find a death record in Jackson Co., MO. Kansas city for a Edward A. Stephens, 1931. Can't be him. I have a picture of him with grandchildren taken in 1933.Thanks, Bruce Stevens --- Richard and Pat <lane@grantspass.com> wrote: > Dear David: > > I have been watching this exchange and wondering if > there could be a > connection to our family. 1. [STEVENS] Stevens/Ashley/Crittenden/Root, in Grafton, Ohio by 1820 from Pittsfield, Mass
    2. Those Happy Glatz's
    3. I am looking for the parents of David Stevens (b. 26 Nov. 1776, d.21 Feb 1847) who arrived in Grafton, Ohio just before 1820, from the Pittsfield, Massachusetts area. His second wife was Hannah Root, dtr of Oliver Root. David's sister Olive Stevens married David Ashley Jr. and preceded David in arriving in Grafton, Medina (now Lorain), Ohio. One possibility has been suggested that Olive Stevens who married David Ashley was the daughter of Parker and Concurrence (Hull) Stevens, however the Richmond vital records clearly state that THAT Olive Stevens died, eliminating the possibility. Living across the road in Grafton was the family of William and Lydia (Stevens) Crittenden -- possibly another sister of David and Olive? William Crittenden's son of the same name was also one of the witnesses to David's will. David's children by his first wife (Keziah Kinney) were Charles (m. Lucinda Jones), Almira (m. John Lines Clark), William (don't know anything about him) and Mary Ann (m. Hiram Bronson). Any help in ascertaining the parentage and siblings of David Stevens would be greatly appreciated.

I have found that his mother at her death stated that "Henry W Stevens is MY son". There is also a story that Henry's original last name was Pool(e) and that three members of his family died in a buggy accident and that is how he came to his mother Sara Stevens. I have found no record yet of a marriage for Sara Stevens until she wed Thomas Tanner in 1895. Henry W Stevens 18 Jan 1880 Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, New York and died 1954 Richville Sta Lawrence County New York. His mother was Sarah Marie Stevens born in 1854 in Gouverneur St Lawrence County New York. She was the daughter of James C and Mary A Patterson Stevens. I have not been able to verify one way or the other the buggy accident story. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is a tremendous coincidence that there is a Frank Stevens and a Francis Stevens with the same birth year and birth state not that I want to think that a brother married a sister but more so the census data was wrong. Since the husband and wife both had the same last name and came from roughly the same geographical area of the country I suspect I will find a common ancestor. Thankks again for your help. Author: Rekput Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4129.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I had a few minutes this morning so did some research for you and found that Ella Stevens married a Frank A. Stevens in Blue Earth on Feb 16, 1884. The 1880 census of Leroy, Blue Earth MN shows a Frank Stevens 19 born in WI, the son of Sophia , 45, born NY and her daughter May L 10 b WI. This Frank Stevens also indicates his parents were BOTH born in NY, so that matches the 1900 and 1910 census I saw showing Ella's husband's parents both born in NY. I don't know what became of Ella's sister, Francis...if she married or died young, but she is not in her parent's 1880 household...though she would have been 19 and certainly old enough to have married. I did marriage search for her on Familysearch.com though and none appeared, while Ella's came up immediately. It's more than likely that if her sister, Francis, married, she did so in Blue Earth. Otherwise, there may be a death record for her depending on how early the county started death records. You might check with the county gen. society and see if they have tombstone records in Blue Earth County that might show Francis in a family burial ground along with her parents or grandparents. Her grandfather was Levi Sr. and mother was Francis...both born in VT before 1800. Obviously, the girl, Francis b about 1861 was named after her paternal grandmother. I'm not related to these people...just found it an interesting brain exercise this morning. Good luck, Julie There was another Francis Stevens in the same county in 1870, however, though this kid was born in WI, his parents were born in Ohio and NY. His father was W. L. Stevens b Ohio and mother was an Elsia born NY. So, it is the son of Sophia, Frank Stevens, who is the most likely candidate to be the husband of Ella Stevens.
