Author: ShawneeMary7thgen Surnames: Stevens / Stephens & Barker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/4134.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Scott Barker, My Aunt Wilma Cross/ Richmond`s mom = (my Grandma, Zania Belle Barker Cross), Aunt Wilma mentioned a Nancy Stevens or Stephens, & I believe she was the wife of one of our Barkers, I think it was my Grandma Zainia`s dad : David Barker`s mom most likely, less likely his grandma. In Indian Blood- Finding your native American Ancestor vol. I by Richard Pangburn it states that Stevens / Stephens is a Deleware & Shawnee name. Among the Shawnees & Delewares dealt with by the Ohio Company traders as early as 1756 were Frank Stevens & John Stevens. Francis (Frank) stevens was a trader at Alleghney in 1734, & frankstown was named for him. When Rev. David Jones visited Newcomerstown at the mouth of Captina Creek in 1772, he preached to the Delewares, using David Owens as his interpreter. "Mr. Owens was well aquainted with them & let them know what sort of man I was. They all seemed to show respect to me, even afterwards when some were drunk. They were not rude to me, but would take ahold of my hand & say, `you be minsta.` We remained here over the Sabbath & in the evening I instructed when the Indians came over. The man of most sense & consideration in this place is called Frank Stevens...." In somewhat broken English, Frank Stevens told Jones that he looked on God as the giver of all things. If he killed a deer, he thought that god gave him that good luck." Remember many of our "white" ancestors were actually of mixed tribal blood. Folks, this is a reminder that any post to a list that starts with the phrase "This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list." has been "gatewayed" from the surname Board to the surname List. Simply, this means that the original post was sent, in this case, to the STEVENS Board and, because the "gateway" between the Board and List has been opened, was also automatically re-sent to the STEVENS List. BUT, this means that unless the original Board poster is also a member of the List (and most are not), any replies to a gatewayed post sent to the List will NOT be seen by the Board poster. If you wish to reply to a gatewayed post in such a way that your reply will be seen by the Board poster, you must do so by clicking on the "Message Board URL:" link, and reply using the Board response system. Thank-you for the info on Michael!! We, his Aunt Stephanie and I have often wonder about him. He has always been in our prayers. I always wanted to say that I was sorry to Connie for our differences. She was plucked from her home, was fighting for custody of one son and left in a strange house all day watching 2 lil children not very different in age while I worked 12 hour days and his father Phillip was job searching. I being a young mother, newly divorced myself, wasn't at all nice to live with I'm sure. I hope after Connie Divorced Phillip she found someone who truly loved and honored her, that was my prayer anyhow. I'm glad Michael is married and I hope he is blessed with loving children to fill his heart with plenty of love and happiness. I'm not sure if he has read the family tree or not. back in 2001 his father Phillip past away. His sister Christine had gotten to met with their father before he died. He is buried in the Dayton VA Cemetery in Ohio. He was homeless for many years, from what I'm to understand from those who knew him then he never had a moments peace after his divorce from Connie. Addiction and depression took hold of his life and he never had control of it again. then Cancer and the effects of the neglect he imposed on himself got the best of him and he died, in 2001. here is a link to his page on rootsweb: Phillip Hunt Stevens http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3199569&id=I628528451 WE HAVE NEVER FOGOTTEN HIM EVER!! this is the first e-mail I have received about him. and we send our blessing to him and his new wife and to his mother as well. if it is possible to send a picture on how he turned out that would be wonderful. my e-amil is gindre43920@yahoo.com I live in East Liverpool, Ohio now but his cousin Tony's wife lives in the house in Groveport, Ohio His Aunt Stephanie is still in Columbus, Ohio. and Last I knew his sister Christine had moved back to Columbus to be with her husband, her married name was Morgan then in 2001. Robert was working for a cabinet company in Columbus I think in 2001 and Joey goes by Beery now, Joseph Lynn Berry his e-mail was joebee48@hotmail.com I hope to hear from Michael someday and intil then I will keep praying for his family. thank-you for the response and may God bless you as well.
