    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Rekput Surnames: Stephens, Figg, Ramsey, Hiatt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/38.49.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I did one last search for you this morning to see if I could find the location of Edward Stephens in 1850 Kentucky. I was able to locate him, wife and child, Thomas in District 1, Spencer Co, KY. Edward Stephens 27 KY Elizabeth 20 KY thomas E 3 KY (Thomas was the oldest kid in their 1860 household in Monroe Co, IN, so this is the right family.) I also did a check for ANY Stephens in Spencer Co as well as a search on the IGI for possible birth parents for this Edward Stephens. I was lucky on both counts. The Familysearch.org IGI shows that an Edward Stephens born in 1822/3 was the son of Edward and Mary Ramsey Stephens. There is also an Ancestral file on Familysearch.org, which I'll get to in a bit. The 1850 census for this father and mother of Edward born 1822/3 is as follows: Edward Stephens 55 Maryland Mary R. 52 KY Samuel H. 19 KY John L. 20 KY Mary 24 KY Alex I 15 Ky Sarah 12 KY Benj. H. 10 Ky The Ancestral file indicates that Mary Ramsey was the daughter of Seth Ramsey and Lucy Hiatt and that couple was Marry Feb 5, 1789/80 in Lincoln Co, KY. Lucy's father was William Hiatt b about 1739. Seth Ramsey was born about 1764 in Culpepper Co, VA and died about 1840/50 in Spencer Co, KY. You should check out this Ancestral file yourself on line, but also understand that the information in Ancestral files should always be confirmed by your own research. If you go to this Ancestral file, you will find that there was a submitter and submitter information and more information to glean. It's possible that you could contact the person who submitted the information and connect with them. They usually always have some connection to the family. This submitter is in Michigan, but I don't want to post her name on this forum. Another find on Familysearch.org was a marriage reference to an Elizabeth Figg and an Edward Stephens in KY 1845-48. Further search found an Elizabeth Figg April 26, 1829 in Shelby Co, KY and who died Dec 2, 1910. Her parents were Thomas Figg b Oct 8, 1805 of Hardin , KY and Rebecca Howerton Figg b March 8, 1810 VA. This couple and a huge houseful of kids were just a page or so away from one of the Edward Stephens 1850 Spencer Co, IN families. Thomas Figg was the son of Seeli and Mary Kay Kendall Figg. He died March 15, 1867 in Ellettsville, Monroe Co, IN. His wife, Rebecca Howerton Figg was the daughter of James Howerton and Sarah Coots and she died in Elletsville, MOnroe Co, IN Jan 23, 1897. I'm sure you could find at least Rebecca Figg in 1870 and 1880 Monroe Co, IN. Anyway, along with the Ancestral File data (which should always be checked for accuracy with research records) and the fact that this Figg family moved to Monroe Co, IN, it pretty much nails it in my m! ind that Thomas and Rebecca were the parents of Elizabeth, wife of Edward Stephens (b 1822), so his wife's last name was Figg. There should be a marriage record in Monroe Co, IN for them. The 1850 census for Thomas and Rebecca Figg is as follows: Thomas Figg 44 KY Rebecca 40 VA Eli 18 Ky James 15 KY Sarah A 12 Ky Thomas D 10 Ky Nancy S 9 Ky John T 7 Ky Columbus 4 KY Mildred E 2 Ky Elizabeth fits in nicely as one of their older children. BTW...there is an E. Figg, female, age 80, born Maryland, also in District 1 of Spencer co, KY in 1850. She is living with apparently a married daughter and family. She could well be the mother of Thomas Figg and thus back another generation on that line. So, to recap, here's the Stephens line as we now know it to be for you: Curtis son of Robert and Dorie/Dovie Swafford Robert son of James M. and Nancy Morton/Martin James M. son of Edward (1822 KY) and Elizabeth Figg Edward son of Edward (about 1795 Maryland) and Mary Ramsey There are a lot of gaps of information left for you to research and individuals in both the Spencer Co, KY and Monroe Co, IN areas. Please go to the Ancestral files on Familysearch.org to check out all the extended lines indicated for the families I mentioned above. This is as far as time will permit me to take this. But, it was a fun research exercise and I was glad to help you out. I wish you well future research for your Stephens family. I couldn't understand why I couldn't find anything on anyone on the Stevens side of the family. I could understand it if it was like really far back in time but I am talking about my Father and his Father. I couldn't even get a line on that. The Dovie Swafford name I have noticed several times had to pass up. Then a couple of weeks ago I talked to one of my sisters and she told me that she had to get the death certificate on my Grandpa and told me that the name Robert Stevens was down as the Father of Curtis Stevens. So this whole thing has been very confusing for me. Thank yo so much for helping me out. I am so happy getting this information and if you do get anything else on this please let me know. This means a lot to me. Charla (Charlie) Stevens Seems the name switching thing runs in the family. My name is Charla and I have always gone by the name Charlie. What a trip. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Rekput Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.stevens/38.49.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello again. I have more information for you. As you know, this was a very difficult search, made more difficult by apparently someone using another name once they reached adulthood. Here's what I found. As I've already told you, your Curtis, b 1909/10 was the son fo Robert Stephens and wife Dorie per the 1920 census. I have since found birth records for three of their children, including Curtis and one sister, Catherine M....and another daughter, I'll get to in a minute. Catherine M. Stevens was shown to have parents Robert Stevens and Dove (Dorie?) Swafford...May 30, 1909 Your Curtis was shown to have parents William Stevens and Dovie Bauman Nov 14, 1910 This might seem like there were two separate mothers, but I don't believe that is the case. I went to Familysearch.org and did a search for Dove Bauman, but got nothing that seemed like a match for her born 1885. But, I did get a positive match for a Dove Swafford, botn 1885, daughter of James Swafford and Margaret Bowman (Bauman?). ah HA!!! There was obviously just one mother. Now, to reconcile the father's name issue...of Robert...or William. The third birth record was for a daughter elizabeth, b April 14, 1914. This is apparently MILDRED Elizabeth or ELIZABETH Mildred who was 6 years old in the 1920 household of Robert and Dorie/Dovie. HER parents were listed as William C and Dovie/Dowie Swafford. Now it makes sense that apparently Robert was probably fully named, Robert William C or William C. Robert. I suspect the former...and that possibly he was named after a relative who died sometinme between 1900 and 1910 when he assumed the name Robert (also after his marriage in about 1908 BTW). There is a marriage record for a ROBERT STEVENS in Monroe Co, IN ...says he was born Oct 7....father was James and mother, Nancy. This confirms what I suspected. In 1900, the James W. Stephens b 1852 IN and wife Nancy A b 1860 IN had the following children: Oscar b Jan 1883 age 17 (he was the guy living next to Robert in 1920) William C b Oct 1884 age 15 Grace B b April 1886 age 14 Ethel B b July 1891 8 The above William C is the same William who married Dovie/Dorie Swafford (mother maiden name was Bauman) and who was shown to be the father of Elizabeth (Mildred) and Curtis A....and as Robert, the father of Catherine M. So, now we got back another generation and I believe one more I can do for you yet. I believe James is the son of Edward and Elizabeth Stevens of Monroe Co. 1860 Census Edward 38 KY Edlizabeth 33 KY Thomas E 11 KY William S 10 KY James M 7 IN Zachariah 5 IN Benjamin 2 KY Thomas Ashbrook 21 Indiana Note that the famiily apparently made a trip back to KY between 1855 and 1860, during which time little Benjamin was born. Wherever this family was in 1850, that's where your family apparently came from in KY, since the two older boys were born there...they should show up in 1850 in KY. 1930 census: Dorie J. Stephens 44 Widow m 22 years b IN IN IN Curtis A 20 Mildred J. 17 from this we see that Robert, Aka William C, died between 1920 or 1930 James M. Stephens apparently married a Nancy Martin/Morton. There are birth records for three of their children that I could find.....names not given in my on line data, but you can check the birth records there in Monroe Co for the full details. Two gave mother as Nancy Martin and one as Morton I believe. Son, Jan 23, 1883 (was Oscar b Jan 1883 per 1900 census) Daughter April 17,, 1886 (was Grace b April 1886) daughter July 17, 1891 (was Ethel b July 1891) ***Important note here is that I could not find William C. aka Robert in the birth records. He may just be mix indexed, but I tired just using parents' names and any Stevens or Stephens in Monroe Co and nothing came up. He was supposedly born in IN, but maybe they were briefly in another county...or Nancy was for his birth..or maybe they tripped back across into KY for some reason for a year and he was actually born there. In any case...it was disappointing not to find his birth record, but perhaps it is really there in Monroe county after all....and was missed by the WPA workers who indexed the records....or maybe the page wasn't readable for some reason. We know though, that he was born Oct 7, 1884 when we combine two separate records...his marriage...and the 1900 census. The Nancy age 49 in the household of Oscar age 27 in the 1910 census of Monroe Co, a couple doors from Robert,we now know is Robert's/ William C.'s, mother. That's all I have...quite a leap forward. My Grandfathers name was Curtis A. Stevens born 1910 Indiana and died 1980 in Colorodo. He married Mildred Payton Indiana and I believe she is still alive. They had 6 children together Ida or Ada, Linda, Charles, Harold, Arthur and Robert. They were born through the 1930's. Charles Curtis Stevens is my Father. Any information on this line of Stevens would be great. For some reason I can't get past Curtis Stevens. Help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
