Sterns, January 20, 2009, Harvey Nelson Sterns, Professor Emeritus of Lock Haven University, died Jan. 15, 2009 at his home in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was 84 years old. He was born Feb. 25, 1924 in Detroit, Mich. He held a doctorate in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan and bachelor's and master's degrees in Art Education from Wayne State University. After serving in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, he was an elementary school teacher and administrator in Michigan and Germany and a professor at Marshall University, W.Va. Over the course of 20 years at LHU, he was professor and chair of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, associate dean of the School of Education and dean of Academic Administration. He retired in 1992. His passions were Shakespeare, Civil War history, sports cars, the ocean and travel. He was particularly proud that both of his daughters earned doctorate degrees. He is survived by daughters Robin Sterns (Mitchell Hennes) of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Holly Sterns Shaw (Jonathan) of Ft. Collins, Colo., and grandchildren Austin and Allison Shaw. He was married to Shirley M. Sterns of Lock Haven for 25 years. A private memorial service to scatter his ashes in the Caribbean Sea will be held later this spring.
