    1. [STERNS] List closing
    2. Timothy Stowell
    3. Folks, Best I can tell there are 8 individuals subscribed to the list as one or two of us are subscribed under different addresses. Effective 3/2, this list along with all the other lists on Rootsweb will cease to work. They've promised to keep the list archives alive. It is my plan for those who would like to continue to be on a list of researchers that this list be folded into another list as I am hoping to set up a list for the STEARNS family name knowing that that name has often been spelled STERNS. Please let me know if you have any questions and/or would like to continue into a new list. Tim Stowell list admin

    1. [STERNS] Sterns news and roll call
    2. Timothy Stowell
    3. After being down for several weeks in Feb - Mar, the mailing list is running again as the underlying software was upgraded. I'm still trying to determine all the administrative things that have changed. There is talk of closing inactive lists, so if we want to keep this list alive we need to have some posts to the list. This list has 8 subscribers. There is the possibility that the list may be folded into the Stearns list - I'm just not sure at this point. Thus it seems we need to do a roll call of sorts to see who is still interested in finding lost relatives. While I've seen my ancestor listed as Harris Sterns, mostly it has been Harris Stearns who died circa 1903 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY. Off the top of my head I don't remember if he had any male heirs that produced offspring. I'm descended from one of his daughters and thus my Stearns line ends with him. I have traced his line back to the 1600s I believe it was in Massachusetts. Tim Stowell Chattanooga

    3. Greetings of the season. For one reason or another people seem to be a bit nicer this time of year. As in years past, I offer for your view a set of Christmas cards saved by my grandmother from around 100 years ago: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/chrstmas.htm We're off to show our daughter real snow, on this her first Christmas. Temperatures in MN are a lot colder than here. We should be there by Sunday where the high is forecast to be 1 with a low of -16 (16 degrees below zero)! Christmas Eve - high -> 5, low -> -15 warming up on Christmas day to 17. Stay warm! May you and yours have a wonderful holiday season. Tim Stowell

    1. [STERNS] closure for veteran's family
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. This morning (Thursday) I received a blurb about how genealogy folks can assist in the closure for families of soldiers who did not return from various conflicts by providing research - clues to the Department of Defense, that receives remains from time to time from various spots on the globe, to use DNA matching to find living relatives of those service personnel. So I took a look to see if any STEARNS or STERNS names were listed. WORLD WAR II - service number - O-96113 - STERNS, CHARLES M JR I wonder if anyone here, knew this serviceman and/or his family? The website to review - for other names is http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/ Tim Stowell Chattanooga, TN Give me ambiguity or give me something else

    3. Another year is drawing to a close. We've seen some good times and some bad times, happiness and sadness. Sometimes these are mixed leaving us wondering. Some may have lost loved ones or are near such an event. Some may have new ones coming into their lives. I suppose for most it has been a mixed bag year. We wonder what the new year will bring in it's bag - hope, joy, sorrow and a whole host of emotions no doubt. This note is to wish each of you a good closing of the books for 2007, a better opening in 2008. As of this evening this list has 7 members, with 2 members subscribed under more than one address. Years ago my grandmother saved several postcards sent to her in the early years of the 20th century. Some of these are presented for your enjoyment classified as Christmas and New Year's Day cards. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/chrstmas.htm http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/newyears.htm Tim Stowell Chattanooga, TN

    1. [STERNS] Jest 'Fore Christmas
    2. Tim Stowell
    3. JEST 'FORE CHRISTMAS Father calls me William, sister calls me Will, Mother calls me Willie, but the fellers call me Bill! Mighty glad I ain't a girl---ruther be a boy, Without them sashes, curls, an' things that's worn by Fauntleroy! Love to chawnk green apples an' go swimmin' in the lake--- Hate to take the castor-ile they give for bellyache! Most all the time, the whole year round, there ain't no flies on me, But jest 'fore Christmas I'm as good as I kin be! Got a yeller dog named Sport, sick him in the cat; First thing she knows she doesn't know where she is at! Got a clipper sled, an' when us kids goes out to slide, 'Long comes the grocery cart, an' we all hook a ride! But sometimes when the grocery man is worrited an' cross, He reaches at us with his whip, an' larrups up his hoss, An' then I laff and holler, "Oh, ye never teched me!" But jest 'fore Christmas I'm as good as I kin be! Gran'ma says she hopes that when I git to be a man, I'll be a missionarer like her oldest brother, Dan, As was et up by the cannibuls that lives in Ceylon's Isle, Where every prospeck pleases, an' only man is vile! But gran'ma she has never been to see a Wild West show, Nor read the Life of Daniel Boone, or else I guess she'd know That Buff'lo Bill an' cow-boys is good enough for me! Excep' jest 'fore Christmas, when I'm good as I kin be! And then old Sport he hangs around, so solemnly an' still, His eyes they seem a-sayin': "What's the matter, little Bill?" The old cat sneaks down off her perch an' wonders what's become Of them two enemies of hern that used to make things hum! But I am so perlite an' 'tend so earnestly to biz, That mother says to father: "How improved our Willie is!" But father, havin' been a boy hisself, suspicions me When, just 'fore Christmas, I'm as good as I kin be! For Christmas, with its lots an' lots of candies, cakes, and toys, Was made, they say, for proper kids an' not for naughty boys; So wash yer face an' bresh yer hair, an' mind yer p's and q's, An' don't bust out yer pantaloons, and don't wear out yer shoes; Say "Yessum" to the ladies, an' "Yessur" to the men, An' when they's company, don't pass yer plate for pie again; But, thinkin' of the things yer'd like to see upon that tree, Jest 'fore Christmas be as good as yer kin be! - Eugene Field

    3. Here's an alternative for ya'll - For a specific other state or special project - http://www.usgenweb-search.us/ (not all states are available but soon will be) I found it quite interesting as these just focus on web sites associated with the various USGenWeb Project sites - which depending upon your query can be more specific perhaps than Ancestry, Google or some other search engine. I know for myself that my family tended to hop across county lines rather than the lines redrawn around them as the census years rolled by. Perhaps your missing family is sitting just over a county line - where you may have not been looking. Tim Stowell

    3. I ran across this web site while seeking another line in Merrimack, NH: http://www.nh.searchroots.com/HillsboroughCo/Merrimack/familytrees1B.html How much of this is fact / fiction I don't know but it may provide someone some tips. In fact there is a disclaimer regarding the accuracy of the information on the site at the bottom of the page. Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net Chattanooga, TN

    1. [STERNS] Searching for Lillian B Sterns and her parents
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Stern, Sterns, Stearns, Ford, Kammer, Midzow, Riley, LaVene Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.sterns/36/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is my grandmother on my mother's side. I know she was born in Toledo, Ohio on 17 May 1891. She married Harry Leslie Ford in Seattle, WA on 19 Sep 1928. She died in Seattle, WA on 3 Dec 1984. All I have is that her mother was Amelia Kammer born in Michigan, possibly in 1865 and died 30 Mar 1938, Bellingham, WA. Her father was August Sterns born in Michigan. Amelia Kammer's mother was possibly Caroline Midzow or Miszow. Father was Conrad Kammer. Lillian was also married before. 1st husband was Lloyd Riley and 2nd husband was William? LaVene. Any information anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

    3. The old year has left us. All of its triumphs and tragedies, hopes and dreams are now a part of our history. In comes the new year, a clean slate, upon which we will write our own story. On this first day, we can resolve to do many things. Many of these will soon be lost in the busy part of our lives. Still here and there some of those seeds of resolution will bear fruit. >From the writer of Ecclesiastes - "To everything there is a season... a time to be born and a time to die..a time to weep and a time to laugh..a time of war and a time of peace. May the new year bring you many triumphs, few tragedies, dreams fulfilled, faith in your fellow man, hope for the future and charity for all. To celebrate the promise of the new year I'm passing along the URL of a site I created in 2005 of vintage New Year's cards from my personal family collection. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/newyears.htm If you missed the vintage Christmas cards, there is a link included to view them. May you have a wonderful New Year. Tim

    3. Tis the season to be with family, celebrate or create traditions unique to your family. For those of you who've added members to your family this year by birth, marriage or discovery - congratulations. For those of you who've lost members for whatever reason, my condolences. Some traditions pass as do the generations, while others are continued or created. For my family I remember my father speaking of his childhood in central New York in the 1930s, where on Christmas Eve his father would go out, find, cut down, a tree for Christmas. Brought back home it was decorated with among other things candles, which were lit at some point. For myself, the last few years when we've gone to Minnesota for the holiday, usually after lunch on Christmas day, we've walked down the middle of the local river for a mile or more, seeing the tracks left by the various creatures in the snow on the river and river banks. Sometimes we see pheasant and once I saw a snowy owl. To celebrate the season I'm passing along the URL of a site I created last year, of vintage Christmas cards from my personal family collection. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state1/cards/chrstmas.htm Merry Christmas to you all, Tim
