    3. Requesting help from list members familiar with the STEPHENS / STEVENS lines which include males with the given name "Barnabus". Could you please take a few minutes to review our John STEPHENS / STEVENS family info below, including son 'Barnabus' , to see if there might be a connection to your research? Does anyone recognize the following family from the info we have compiled? Would appreciate any help or suggestions for tracing our John/Barnabus....back to John's parents in VA... or OH... or NC. Info for John and Mary (my 3x gr-grandparents) comes from the 1880 US Census, info on their children comes from other census records, various online databases and the kind assistance of other Rootsweb list members. I realize that there is still much researching and documenting to do (esp. with the spelling back and forth between STEVENS and STEPHENS).. but I just can't help thinking that the name 'Barnabus' is significant and could lead us back another generation or two... Here's what we have... note Barnabus is 6th child listed below... given names of other children might also provide clues.. John STEVENS or STEPHENS born est. 1803 in VA (age listed as 77 in 1880 US Census); father born NC, mother born VA; living in Sidney, Fremont Co, Iowa in 1880 married Mary (maiden name believed to be Bierley or Byerly or Briley) between 1820-1830 - Mary born est. 1810 - in Ohio, both parents born NC Children listed below -- include Barnabus Bennett, b. 7 July 1849 (1) Mahala STEVENS, born about 1831 in Indiana, married (1) William BIERLEY, February 27, 1851 in Tipton County Indiana and (2) Andrew Jackson McCULLOCH or McCOLLOCH on November 1, 1856 in Union County Iowa; McCulloch b. est. 1819 in VA (2) Lottie [Charlotte] STEVENS, born about 1833 in Indiana; married Henry MOORES on Dec. 23, 1859 - Union County, IA (3) John STEVENS, born 8 Oct 1839 in Indiana, married to Harriet Salina BUNNELL, born. est. 1843 (4) Milroy STEPHENS/STEVENS, born ca. 1842 (marriage info unknown - may have fought in Civil War) (5) George W. STEVENS, born August 27, 1844, age 36 in 1880 census, died May 20, 1929; married November 19, l865 to Mrs. Nancy (Nan) J. FLETCHER MORTON (6) Barnabus Bennett STEVENS, born 7 July 1849 in Indiana; married on Aug. 12, 1874 in Fremont Co., IA, to Mrs. Emeline Melissa (Rose) FLETCHER, the divorced 3rd wife of Nancy Fletcher Morton's father (Note: appears as 'Barneybass' on marriage record!) (7) Sarah Elizabeth STEVENS/STEPHENS, born 1853-54, who married Peter KRYGER February 8, 1873 (8) Andrew J. STEPHENS/STEVENS, born 1857 in Iowa. (marriage info unknown) In the 1880 Census, Andrew STEVNS [sic], age 23, born in IA, farm laborer, (father born VA, mother born OH) is listed as living with Mahala and her husband McColloch (likely his sister?)
