    1. Stephens-Stevens men's DNA testing project Update - 09/01/2004
    2. Lowe DNA
    3. Stephens-Stevens and other related cousins, We now have 22 men's DNA marker results from Family Tree DNA results posted at YSEARCH for all to browse. DNA testing is very simple to understand and use the results. If 23 of the 25 markers match with another set of DNA results and the SURNAME is the same, you are closely related to this Stephens-Stevens. Note that we have several complete matches of 23 markers or more of the 25 markers match with other Stephens-Stevens men in our project. And several men have found "unknown" Stephens-Stevens lineage there are related to. Our success rate has been good. And our DNA testing project is open to all Stephens-Stevens men world-wide. Our 22 men have haplogroups I, R1b, E3b and 5 unknown haplogroups in our project. These diverse haplogroups, or ancient paternal genetic types, indicate a very wide geographical spread of the origin of Stephens-Stevens lineages from Paleolithic "Cro-magnon" (I) that entered Europe 12-15,000 years ago to haplogroup R1b from the Levant that brought agriculture to the western European Atlantic Coast, to E3b haplogroups from the mid-east. Our 22 sets of DNA results are posted here at this site for all to browse.... http://www.ysearch.org/ The instructions for comparing our Stephens-Stevens men's DNA results at YSEARCH are found below; and, can be used with any of the 7536 SURNAMES found today this NRY DNA results database. Those 22 Stephens-Stevens men that are participating in our DNA testing program can now upload their direct GED files to YSEARCH records. And, the DNA marker results can now be correlated with GED genealogical lineages posted at YSEARCH to help others researching these same families. Notice 5 GEDS are now posted at our YSEARCH site. I want to encourage all Stephens-Stevens genealogists who are at an impasse in your research to consider DNA testing for one of your Stephens-Stevens men. Many of the Stephens-Stevens lineages were here in the 1640's and pushed west into Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Missouri, and Texas before official records were kept so tracking these lineages can be next to impossible. However DNA testing coupled with genealogical records can help with this search and sometimes link you to an ancestor that settled in colonial America, Canada, and/or Australia. If you have questions about our family-oriented, non-profit project, please write. Thanks Bill Bailey, San Antonio, Texas, 78258 Coordinator Stephens-Stevens men's DNA testing project. **************************************************************************** **************************** Logon to this site below (using Stephens record G2ZK3 record as an example) http://www.ysearch.org/ FIND YOUR RECORD ON YSEARCH (1.) Choose the blue button marked "SEARCH BY LAST NAME" at the top of the screen (2.) Enter the word STEPHENS in "Type the last name to search for" box and hit search (3.) On the next page click on the number underlined in blue in the names or variants column (4.) There should be 22 STEPHENS-STEVENS listed on LAST NAME MATCHING STEPHENS-STEVENS page (5.) Look down the USER ID column for the ID record....G2ZK3 (6.) You can click on this ID number and see the markers results and lineage information (7.) Note my name is attached to this record. (Note if a STEPHENS-STEVENS participant does not want to divulge their name and email address; as coordinator I will add my name and email address to their DNA record results and forward all inquiries to the participant so they may answer the inquiry if they wish to). COMPARE YOUR RESULTS ON YSEARCH (1.) Find the Haplogroup R1b which is my ancient genetic type. (2.) Put a check mark in the STEPHENS men in the first COMPARE COLUMN that are R1b.. (3.) Now click on the underlined blue word COMPARE at the top of the compare column (4.) On the next RESEARCH TOOLS research tools page you can edit and move my ID G2ZK3 so it is first in the list on the RESEARCH TOOLS compare box. (5.) Then type on the SHOW GENETIC DISTANCE box. (6.) Note the GENETIC DISTANCE REPORT and the GENETIC DISTANCE numbers in the last column (7.) Any STEPHENS-STEVENS with a genetic distance of 2 or less is very closely related my Stephens. At this time, there are only two other STEPHENS close matches to my family's DNA results. COMPARE BY SEARCH FOR GENETIC MATCHES (1.) Click on the blue button marked "SEARCH FOR GENETIC MATCHES" at the top of the screen (2.) Type the ID G2ZK3 into the ENTER USER ID box and click on Search by haplotypes (3.) Put 25 into the "...tested at least " box. (4.) And 2 into the "maximum genetic distance" box and then click on the Search box (5.) Note all of the men that display a genetic distance of 2 or less are distantly related to you. If you found a Stephens-Stevens here, that would be a very close cousin. (6.) With a R1b haplogroup, there are four 2's in this compare column so I am very closely related to these other SURNAME folks.
