I'm don't remember the exact query but I did find this while searching for my Dew Stephens in Alabama. Right now my brains seem to be scrambled. I've been researching him for a decade, and still don't know the place of his birth or death. I've relatives who say he was born in Screven Co., GA, but no proof yet. It could be Jasper Co., GA., as you will see in the will below. But, wait!!!!! I think this is my ggggrandfather with the same name. My gggrandfather wasn't born until 1811; so, what six year old boy would have a will? Last Saturday I went to the Mobile Genealogy Library and found a book titled "Jasper County, Georgia - Cemetery and Bible Records", copyright 1969. On pages 70 and 71 I found the following information (verbatim): OLD SMITH CEMETERY, 6 miles east of Monticello, near Putman Co., line. Hannah Smith, consort of Rolin Smith, died June 21st (no year), Age 59. "Dau. of Major Lewis D. Martin, Rev. Soldier of Pendleton District, SC. Left aged husband and 6 children." Rolin Smith, "A Patriotic Southerner", b. Nov.8, 1772, d. Dec.16, 1854, age 82. Amanda M. Stephens, dau. of Rolin and Hannah Smith, b. Sep. 24, 1812, d. Oct. 2, 1853. Lewis D. M. Smith, b. Nov. 12, 1812, d. March 26, 1847. L. F. Smith, b. Sep. 17, 1844, d. Nov. 27, 1920. Thomas H. Smith, b. Nov. 28, 1866, d. Oct. 6, 1915. Hannah M. dau. of Whitfield and Eveline Peurifoy, d. Nov. 19, 1848, age 17. Member Junior Class Macon Female College. ----END---- [These are the only people listed as being buried in this cemetery.] Below are the contents of the wills of a Bolin Smith. Thanks for any help no matter how minute. Francis Smith in Mobile, AL ============================================================ Will of a Bolin Smith (possibly this is Bolin Smith's father) which reads: "Georgia, Jasper County -- June 1, 1817 This is to certify that after my death, that I wish Coland and Clayton to be at liberty and freed from slavery as it has been my opinion, they in right, ought to be, and if they can't be at ease and liberty in this state for them to be sent to some other state where they can be at liberty for them, and to have a reasonable sum out of my estate for a begining to have till they can do well for themselves. The balance of my estate to be distributed between my sister Johns, sister Gray, and my brothers Rolin, and Moses. Given under my hand the day above written -- Bolin Smith B. Smith To John Martin, Esq. of the County and State of Georgia" ============================================================ "Alabama, Autauga County -- October, 1831 I do hereby revoke that part of the within will or testament for Jeremiah, and I do not leave or give or bequeath him the ..... not one cent of my estate and have erased his name. Bolin Smith As John Martin is dead I now direct this to my brother Rolin Smith, Jasper Co., Georgia. I endorse the executorship of this will to brother Jeremiah Smith, January........?.
