    1. Samuel Stephens (again)

    3. About a week ago I sent to the list an initial inquiry re Samuel Stephens, born 1758, wife Mary ____, who apparently died in Ripley County, Indiana, in 1834. Since that time I've made some small progress, and have learned that one of the things I said in my initial message was not true. I had earlier declared that Samuel was born in Carlisle, PA - based on someone else's "reading" of his Revolutionary War Pension declaration. I have since obtained a copy of that pension declaration and while it does confirm that he was born in June 1758, it DOES NOT state that he was born in Carlisle. I think that is "my" Samuel who is listed on the 1783 Westmoreland County (PA) tax list in Franklyn Township (which became part of Fayette County when Fayette County was formed that year). I have also in the meantime learned that Samuel, and family, were in Lincoln County, KY, by 1787 in that part that was spawned off to become Mercer County, and that he was in Christian County, KY, for a couple of years around 1810. I'm now pretty sure that in addition to his daughter, Mary, born 1780 who married Joseph Harbour 11 Feb 1799 in Gerrard Co., KY, that he had a son named John who m. Parthenia Denton 21 Jul 1800 in Gerrard County, and a daughter Sarah/Sally who m. George Dotson 25 Mar 1799 in Mercer County. Is anyone on this list a descendant of John Stephens who died in Fayette County, PA, in the very early 1800s? (His most famous, or best-known, son was Levi). I'm getting very strong vibes that Samuel Stephens (d. 1834) was either a son or a close relative of John Stephens. Notice that Samuel named a son John, and a daughter Sarah (which was John Stephens' wife's name). If Samuel was John's son, then he would have been the youngest of the children, and would, for some reason, not have been named in John's Fayette Co. will. But there are possible explanations for the latter. So does anyone know - other than his not being named in John's will - why it would have been impossible for Samuel to have been a son of John? Or trying another alternative, John Stephens, in his will, named his NEPHEW, Robert Stephens, as his executor. This implies that John's brother (or other nephews and nieces) might have been living in the area. Does anyone know who that brother might have been? And anything about him? Thanks Lou Poole, Richardson, TX
