Is there any archival listing that would show the Stephens surname on the Ga. census for 1900,and the 1910 census? I have been unable to retrieve the census for Jonathan Lafayette Stephens ,for 1900, nor the Dora Chandler Stephens family for 1910. (J.L. died Jan,1910). The kind people at the LDS Center in Richmond have been very helpful, but they did have any luck either. Any suggestions would be appreciated. E mail is OK William J Stephens <patabill@comcast.net>
I'm in Georgia and checked with someone at the Genealogy room here at our local library. She said there is no listing by name available. She did suggest using soundex to locate all Stephens in the 1900 and 1910 census. That would be the only type of listing. She also suggested looking through any books that may have been written on Stephens families. There is one on some Stephens in GA written by a Margaret Stephens. She also mentioned online services such as Ancestry and Heritage Quest. I don't know if you have access to soundex records where you are. If I can get to the library I'll be glad to look for you if you don't. Sherri > Is there any archival listing that would show the Stephens surname on the Ga. census for 1900,and the 1910 census? SHERRI. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT. FROM WHAT I CAN DETERMINE, THE STEPHENS OF MY FORBEARS ARE EITHER FROM KENTUCKY OR PENNSYLVANIA. FIRST CHOICE IS PENNSYLVANIA. IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION IN THAT DIRECTION, I WOULD BE MOST INTERESTED. Most libraries with a genealogy section have computers with the Ancestry Plus program online. You can access many states, counties, etc from early censuses through 1930.and search by location and what you believe to be the correct name spelling or you can request the name by soundex to cover all spellings. The latter with last name only plus county or state, if state is all you have to go on, has proven best in my experience and you can select from the list. I use them quite often around this area.(Middle GA) The only cost is for what you print , usually $.15 per sheet. I feel sure that someone in the library can assist you in accessing and explaining the program. Good luck in your search.
